Heartburn from Hell!

I'm 13 weeks pregnant and this heartburn has been here since like 8 weeks I don't know what else to do. Tums don't work hardly, zantac is starting not to work, it's usually a hit or miss. It doesn't matter what I eat, that's a hit or miss too. It was never this bad during my first 2 pregnancies I'd pop some tums and that would usually suffice.
I want to ask my dr if it's ok to take a PPI like Prilosec or Prevacid. Please tell me if you had to take those or some other PPI during pregnancy and if it was safe? Yesterday my throat was on fire all day it was so bad! I don't know how I'm gonna go through 6 more months of this!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank for all the advice, i asked my dr and he just prescribed some other med that I read can have some nasty side effects so I don't want to take the chance of using it. I'm gonna ask again about Prevacid this week at my next appt.

I had Maalox on my bedside table and drank it like water some nights. There is something about that soothing liquid that was better than any pill or Tums.

Try ginger candies if you are unable to take any medication. I get reflux and these really work. I love the Gin Gins brand. I believe you can find them at Whole Foods as well as other stores.

So sorry you are going through this. It didn't happen to me until much later in my pregnancy, and Tums did the trick. That's obviously not working for you, though.

I'd for sure try to get the doctor to help you with this. If it keeps happening, it can hurt your esophagus.

I do want to mention that I learned that I could not eat bagels and lay down any time soon afterwards. The yeast in the bagels gave me heartburn something awful. (May not have a thing to do with you, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.)

Hope you get some relief soon!

You might want to be careful about using mint-flavored anything. For some of us, mint causes the valve at the top of the stomach to relax, making heartburn worse. You might try some of the fruity Tums, which work better for me.

But please ask your doctor, who has probably helped a bazillion pregnant women with heartburn.

I used Maalox, too! In chewables. Also, chew some mint flavored gum. It helps.

Feel better.

My dr told me after a certain point Tums will make it worse. And he was right. I think I took Pepcid AC. But I can't remember how far along I was before he let me take it. I would talk to your dr and ask before starting anything new.

This will sound crazy, but it works. Pickle juice. My husband gets terrible heartburn and nothing works. One night surfing the internet he ran across someone saying pickle juice and now he SWEARS by it.
And it couldn't be safer for a pregnant mama :)

When I've had it, I was so desperate I took vinegar in water. It was a great relief, but very yucky to drink.

I went from tums to Zantac to Prilosec during my pregnancy. I took Prilosec for at least 13 weeks.

But you should check with your OB, and see what (s)he thinks.

I second the pickle juice. Actually it is the vinegar that works, I use apple cider. I don't know how or why, but it works

My doctor didn't allow any heartburn meds when I was pregnant (many years ago). I found that what worked best was to take drinks of ice cold water. I kept it everywhere, and was especially careful to keep some by my bedside. I don't usually like ice in my drinks, but for pg heartburn I had a glass packed with ice and filled with water. Nothing else anyone suggested would take care of the pain.

I've always done (as well as during pregnancies) taken Baking Soda, mixed with water. The worse the heartburn, the stronger the drink of bicarbonate soda. Works like a charm. In fact, my hubby and I have nicknamed it "Potion" :) Best of luck!!

You're pregnant so get an OK from your doc, but George's Aloe Vera juice has allowed my friend to eliminate ALL meds!

I took Prevacid during my 3rd pregnancy and I felt so much better than the first two. My gall bladder was removed during the first pregnancy and for the second I was very careful about meds. Drank aloe juice, which worked mildly, and figured I had just had to suffer through the acid reflux. By the third pregnancy I decided I was done suffering through it. So far so good. I'm not aware of any damage the meds did my daughter. I have tried drinking tea made from fresh ginger and it did help. Good luck and God bless! I know it is miserable.
