Ok here this goes... I went in to my doctor last week for my 6 month check up. My doctor said my blood pressure is up a bit and wanted to up my blood pressure medicine from 25mg twice a day to 50 mg twice a day. My hypothyroidism levels are almost at the 5.00(meaning I’m not getting enough thyroid hormone medicine). And on top of it she noticed I have a heart murmur. My doctor went ahead and up my blood pressure medicine. She didn’t say much about my thyroid but wanted to run the test since sometimes the thyroid regulates the blood pressure. She didn’t call back about my thyroid levels but I looked them up online thru their website for test results. My doctor going out in July and she wasn’t to concerned about the heart murmur. So my question can high blood pressure be causing this murmur? Should i go to another doctor for a second opinion? I’m in my early 30s still so i trying keep up on my health for my kids? Anyone know anything about heart murmur? TIA!!

What can I do next?

A heart murmur can be completely harmless. However, we don't know if your heart murmur is or not. Start by calling the doctors office back and telling them you have questions. The nurse will call you back and answer the questions you have or ask the doctor and get back to you. Also, getting a second opinion never hurts!

We aren’t doctors here. You need to have a cardiologist give you some tests. Based on those tests, you’ll have your answer. You VERY much need another doctor to help you with your thyroid. It is a condition that takes a lot of tweaking. Your current doctor isn’t managing your thyroid problem. If you want to keep up with your children, you MUST get this managed. It’s good that your blood pressure is being paid attention to, but you need a doctor who will manage both your blood pressure and your thyroid.

An endocrinologist manages thyroid dysfunction. I would start there.

Blood pressure and thyroid issues can cause what's known as "innocent" murmurs. My mom had a murmur caused by scarlet fever when she was a child. She lived to be 82 and was able to pass heart tests with flying colors. You're still young, so it could very well be an innocent murmur. It never hurts to get a second opinion!

It would not hurt to get a second opinion. Even if you don't you need to ask a dr if high blood pressure can cause the heart murmur. We won't know that. Sorry.

Good luck!

I have a heart murmur as well as most of the girls in my family. Your murmur will not affect your HBP. If you are having heart palpitations it is likely due to your thyroid. Getting a 2nd opinion is always good so if you feel that you need one do it. You should have your kids peds check to see if they have a murmur or not. Good luck.

You need to ask this question to a medical professional. I would ask the doctor who made the diagnosis. Their office have your medical records and can answer your question as well as explain why the doctor isn't concerned.

A heart murmur isn't necessarily serious. I have a heart murmur discovered in my 20's or 30's. It is benign and most likely caused by a childhood illness, scarlet fever. I'm 75, never had a problem with the murmur. Sometimes it shows up in a test. Sometimes doesn't.

Instead of asking can high blood pressure cause a heart murmur, ask your doctor what could cause a murmur and is mine benign.

People in my family have heart murmurs (my extended family) and it meant nothing. As others mentioned, it sometimes showed up - sometimes didn't. I have a friend who when she had an operation, it showed up, and then never again.

If you're not satisfied with the care from your current doctor, the best thing to do is to get a second opinion.

However - my advice is this. Go back and ask questions. Usually, people don't ask enough questions - then they get home, and go on the internet and get confused. Call, make a follow up appointment, and make a list. Do that before deciding they are not the doctor for you. The more you switch around, the more complicated it gets.

call your doctor back. make another appointment, write down all your questions, and go in and discuss them thoroughly.

get a second opinion even if you're satisfied. can't hurt, right?

my younger has a weird heart murmur. innocent so far, but i nag him to get it checked every few years regardless.

good for you for being on top of this- but you shouldn't come here for medical opinions. there are trained professionals easily available to you. we're not doctors here.

If you're not seeing a cardiologist already, that is your next step.
