I have a 4 year (almost 5 yr old) daughter. Yesterday she grabbed her chest and said that it hurt. That really freaked me out. Of course I couldn't get her in to the dr. but I took her to Redi Care last night. The dr. asked if anyone ever said she had a heart murmur? I was floored no one had ever mentioned it. I always take her for her check ups. She had also said over the last couple weeks that her body feels funny. A week ago monday she got her last set of shots so she is ready for school. I read online that a fever can give you a murmur. She didn't feel well a couple days after her shot but didn't really get sick. I wasn't sure if this could have caused it. The dr. is sending us to a ped. cardioligist. I just have to wait until they set up the appt.
Can anyone share if ther child has a murmur and what affects it has on them. Thank You so much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I took her to the Dr. and was told that she has a functioning murmur. The murmurs seem to show up in children around 4/5. They did an EKG and found that she has an irregular beat. We will have to go back next month to get a heart monitor so that she can wear that for 24 hrs. The Dr. that I went to was fery nice. She assured me that her heart looks normal for her age. There wern't any findings that were cause for concern.

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my request. I love mamasource. Everyone had great information!!
A sincere THANK YOU to you ALL!!!!!

Did they say what kind of a murmur? My oldest daughter (that is almost 20)has what you call a workable heart murmur. Basically she would out grow it. I have never heard anything else about it. My son that is 14 has an extra heart beat. We went and had the test and stuff done and there wasn't anything that we had to worry about. Some people just have extra beats sometimes and live with it. I'm sure all will turn out fine. My son use to tell me that his heart was beeping funny and I know what you mean by freeking out. Good luck to you~

That is so scary. I hope that you find answers that you need at the Dr. appts.
My son was also diagnosed with a heart murmur at 5 years old. It was discovered at his 5 yr check up. We had never been told of it before. We did go to a ped. cardiologist where they ran some tests (non-invasive & not scary) and determined that it is not serious. They told us he will most likely never be adversely affected by his "little" murmur.
We don't even worry about it now. I haven't thouht of it in months actually! He is now 6 1/2 and doing great!
Good Luck!

You have alot of responses already but my children don't have a heart murmur but my mother does. I didn't even know it until a few years ago!! Anyway, I guess you can always have it and live a normal life. The only thing she has to do is take an antibiotic before doing anything at the dentist to prevent infections and that sort of thing.
They will do their tests and stuff at the cardiologist but I am sure everything will be fine with your daughter.

Hi T.,
I have a heart murmur. We found out when I was your daughters age. Some are silent murmurs and are hard to detect. Usually people are fine with murmurs. There are more people out there with murmurs than I realized.

I am in my 40s now and the only thing I find difficult are stairs. I would suggest to keep your daughter as active as possible to ensure a strong heart. I also experience heart palpatations from time to time. As I've gotten older I find that I can't have caffeine because it causes heart palpatations.

Your daughter should have a normal life with a heart murmur. Also it's interesting to note that most of the girls in my family have heart murmurs. These include aunts and cousins. Good luck to you and your family.

Hi T.,
Both of my daughters have murmurs. My oldest has mitral valve prolapse. Neither of them have any health problems and as of a week ago, the doctor could not hear the murmur in my youngest daughter. My mom has a murmur and mitral valve prolapse and she is 55 and in great health. I would bet that your daughter will live a very full, healthy life with a murmur. Keep us updated on what the docs have to say and try not to worry too much as hard as that sounds. :)

Two of my sons and my husband all have heart murmurs. Everything is fine with them and we don't do anything different. Both sons saw cardiologists early on, but no further treatment was needed. I do know certain types of heart murmurs require antibiotics before dental and medical procedures to prevent infection.

Hi T.,
I'm glad you took action and took your daughter to the Ped, however, don't upset yourself until you get results because when my doctor discovered my murmur he said there's a large percentage of people that have one with no problems what so ever. So until the cardiologist checks your daughter, don't worry, most likely she'll be fine. Mine is not a problem.

Good luck!

Two of my kids had heart murmurs. They did EKG s and said there was nothing to worry about afterward.
I know it scares the heck out of you though!
Sometimes the vaccines can cause a reaction. I always tried to use vitamins and stuff to make sure my kids were as healthy as possible when taking those shots.

I would take her to the doc for that "funny feeling" she has. There are things like rheumatic fever that are re-surfacing and can be very serious if not caught and treated.

Make sure you let her Ped know about the murmur and the cardio appt. They will want to get the info from the cardio for her chart.

Hello,
My daughter who is ten has a heart murmur. Last year, she went for a checkup and the doctor found it. He said that most children grow out of it as they grow older. He had her for for an echo cardiagram just to make sure everything was ok. I was very scared, but as it turns out everything turned out normal. My daughter never complained of feeling bad, so when it was a surprise when we found out about it. It's good that you are getting her checked out. More than likely it is something that she will grow out of as well. Good luck, T.

T.,
I have a heart murmur, which they found when I was around 1 yr. old. Mine is called pulmonary valve stenosis (it is a fluttering of one of the valves). I went for routine check ups until I was about 10 and then I was told I wouldn't have to go back to the cardiologist anymore. I will always have the murmur, but it shouldn't ever effect my daily life. I will be 30 this year. I have never had any limitations on physical activity. I do have to take an antibiotic before any dental visits. I do have chest pain every once in a while, but I'm not for sure that is from the murmur.
Most murmurs will go away or will not affect their daily life, but I would get her checked ASAP just to be on the safe side.

My 4 y.o. has a heart murmur. The doctor found hers when she was almost 2. The bad news is that they usually outgrow them by then so it looks like we are stuck with this one. The heart murmurs sound worse when the child has a fever. We had a scare recently because our new pediatrician thought it may have gotten worse and sent us for tests. One test looked a little iffy. We worried for about 2 weeks. Then the cardiologist tells us that she is fine and it hasn't changed one bit in 2 years. She doesn't have to go back for 2 years. She does just fine with hers. She is under no limitations at all. She will probably never have to have surgery for it either.

My second son had one at his one-week appointment. The doc told us that 50% of children actually have one at some point in their life. They can come and go. We went through the EKG and it was found to be benign. I can't remember if they have heard it since, but I want to say they haven't or if they did it was just once.
The only thing that worries me about your story is that she was having pain. Maybe it was a coincidence, but I would investigate it more to be sure.

My daughter has a heart murmur and was discovered at one of her checkup as an infant. We took her to a ped cardiologist and it was normal. Nothing for us to worry about. Many kids have murmurs that they grow out of. She is now an active 4 1/2 year old. But it did scared us when our ped first told us she had a murmur and suggested to see a cardiologist. I felt better when the cardiologist did a thorough test and found nothing wrong with her heart. So, it is a good thing you are going to a cardiologist to check her out. As you can see...many others have responded the same thing...murmurs are usually harmless, but better to check them out for your own piece of mind. There are murmurs that is a sign of heart trouble. Good luck.

I know how you feel! My daughter was diagnosed with a heart murmur and I was very nervous! We have since seen the cardiologist who informed us there are different types of heart murmurs and our daughter has an innocent flow murmur, nothing to be concerned about. She does not even have to take antibiotics with dental work which some type of murmurs require that precaution. My daughter never complained of her chest hurting or feeling bad so I would make sure to explain that in detail to the doctor! My sister also had a heart murmur that could only be heard when she was sick. It was never heard by our doctor during weel visits but heard everytime when ill. My sister did have to take antibiotics before dental work. I wish you the best! I pray everything will be just fine!

Sorry to hear about your son. How was he diagnosed. A couple of months ago on the "Doctors" TV show they had a special on ADHD, and they had a couple on with their son who was likewise not responding to medication. There are new tests out there and they have identifed 4 different types of ADHD with the newest brain scan test and basically some tyes of ADHD do not respond to medication period. They have new therapy methods that word with these kids. Pleas check it out if you can. Because if your son has the ADHD that does not respond to medication you are wasting your moneny and your time and not doing right be your son either. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

T., I know you must be very worried about your daughter. I am not trying to scare you, but I do want you to realize that this could be very serious. I have an 18 month old with several heart defects that had to be repaired with surgery for him to live. He also has a heart murmur even after the surgeries on his heart. However not all heart murmurs indicate anything serious, but some are the main symptom that the heart may not be functioning properly. If she is also having some pain then this should definitely no longer be considered as nothing too serious. I would get into the cardiologist ASAP and find out if anything what is going on. I don't know where you are but we go through Dr Patel at the Heart Center located in Children's hospital in Akron. He saved my son's life. Other symptoms that would indicate something wrong would be fatigue, heavy breathing, cyanosis (blue) around the lips, hands and feet. Poor appetite, loss of interest in physical activities, swelling in the legs hands face and feet, and or cold clamy grayish colored skin. Please Please Please take this serious until you get to the Heart Dr. for your apt. If she is displaying any of the symptoms I have mentioned rush her to the nearest ER. Don't wait for the apt. I am sure that it's nothing, but better to be safe than sorry until you see the Doc. Good luck and please keep an update. If you have any ?'s you can email me here.
