Healthy High Calorie Snacks

My daughter needs to up her calorie intake. She is only nine months old, but her weight has started to drop a bit The doctor seems to think her weight is a combination of her mobility and genetics( My son wound up falling off the growth charts...he went from the 95th percentile to the 4th). After quizzing us about what she is eating at meal time the pediatrician is happy with her meal time diet. He feels like she is getting plenty of veggies, fruits and proteins. He said that he thought she just need to add morning and afternoon snacks to her day. The trick is, he mentioned higher calorie snacks. I got distracted and forgot to ask what foods he would suggest. I have started to add sliced deli meats as a snack for her. Any other suggestions as to what I can give her that has some nutritional value AND higher calories?

What can I do next?

For the first year, the majority of calories should come from breastmilk or formula. You might increase those first as those are the most nutrient dense. The other nutrient dense foods are beans and nuts, but she really, really is too young for those, which can be quite allergenic. Also, if you haven't considered it, I would have her screened for gluten intolerance/celiac (your son as well) as she might not be absorbing nutrients. It is unfortunate, but the problem is occurring far more often in younger kids due to genetic anticipation (a doctor's term - not mine), meaning that autoimmune diseases in our kids are triggered early than in us and are far more likely to be triggered.

Hello,

I would also suggest pedisure, that is what my peditrician suggested to give the girls. You can get a 24 pack at Sam's or Costco for $36.

Avocado
Cream cheese roll ups (cream cheese, deli meat on a tortilla rolled up and cut into swirls)
Cheddar cheese toast fingers- cheddar cheese on toast baked until bubbly and cut into bite size fingers
Fage Greek yogurt with fruit swirled in. (you can get this at Super Target and it is so creamy and good and high in protein and healthy calories)
Dried fruits like apricots, mango, and banana chips

What about the toddler cereal bars? They're a little higher in calories than crackers, and cheerios etc and soft enough that you don't have to worry about her choking on them.

I don't know what age you can start giving Pedisure but my son loves it. Walmart has a knock off that he likes better. I would also try Yo-babies yogurt because its made with whole milk so it will be higher in calories. My son also really liked avacodas and they are high in good fats.
