I recently found out I'm pregnant.blast pregnancy I gained over 70lbs. I'm not in the shape I used to be. Before my son I was very athletic but with my work schedule and making sure I spend a lot of time with my son and my SO. I want us to eat healthier anyway but now it's even more important. Does anyone know of any good websites with recipes that are health and low in fats? I'm not looking to lose weight but try to maintain a healthy weight gain. As of now I'm 40lbs over where I should be. At my most fit I was 135lbs and I'm 5'2".

What can I do next?

Be careful about avoiding fats - it's actually not healthy to do that. You have to eat the RIGHT fats and in the right proportion. There's quite a bit of research showing that the low fat diets of the past 20 years have done nothing to address the weight problem of this country, and may be hindering it.

You definitely want fats from olive oil, avocado, nuts, fish and so on.

Rachael Ray has a lot of pretty simple recipes, and also a lot of quick meals plus some plans for doing a week's worth of meals in a weekend afternoon. You can try her magazine or TV show website or pick up one of her cookbooks (try the library before buying one to be sure you get the right one for your family). Jessica Seinfeld has done 2 cookbooks on doing healthier options that kids will like - one is called "Deceptively Delicious" and I'm not sure what the other one is called.

There's also so much research on how our foods are nutrient-deficient - we just aren't getting the values from our food anymore because of growing, harvesting, storage and processing techniques. So people are really deprived, their bodies crave nutrients, and so they keep eating. There have been some pretty responsible estimates from teams of dietitians that we'd have to eat 5000+ calories a day to get the same vitamins, minerals, trace elements etc. that our grandparents got from eating 2000 calories. In my work, we've found that effective supplementation with patented, comprehensive, non-GMO, absorbable nutrition works wonders with weight control (ending cravings, meeting needs, and without stimulating the central nervous system the way many "diet" products do). What's more, it's safe for kids, pregnant and nursing moms, the elderly, people with cancer, everyone. Anything you buy in a regular store that has warning labels on it is a bad idea, and anything in pill form is close to useless.

Cut white sugar and white flour out of your diet. No junk food (candy, cake, ice cream, chips etc), pasta, or white rice. My friend only gained 2 lbs when she was pregnant with her 3rd although by the end of her pregnancy she had the typical basketball belly. She only ate healthy foods (fruit, vegetables and meat) and lost the extra weight she had from her first two pregnancies.

I don't know of a website, but healthy fats are good for you and important to keep in your diet. You diet is supposed to consist of 30% healthy fats.

Make sure you exercise.

Good luck!

J C and Diane are right on! Also make sure your prenatal vitamin is good, most are not...even those that the doctor recommends. True nutrition will keep you healthy. You may possibly lose some weight and that's okay as long as you're eating right. The recipes are not as important as the food you put in them. Make sure that they are not processed, preferably organic always avoid GMO's!

God bless and congratulations!

best thing to do is the right down everything you eat everyday. it will show you a trend in your eating habits and you will see if you have a balanced diet and alter it to such. you can do it on the computer and it will calculate your salt, protein, carbs (mine is on the fitbit)... and show your dr and he could tell you if you should have more or this or more of that in your diet.

Along with writing down what you eat, focus on making those things better for you. If you do completely different recipes, you have a good chance of rebellion from your family.

Change your fats, not cut them out. Change your cooking oil to olive oil.

Cut out processed foods. Make things from scratch. If you make things with cream of soups, substitute a butter/flour mixture mixed with 1 1/4 cup milk.
Look for substitute ways to make your favorites. Don't change everything at once. This is a lifestyle change.

Cut carbs. You don't have to have bread at every meal. When you do, make it a complex carb like English muffins or oatmeal, or whole grain things.

Lower the amt of meat you eat. If you make spaghetti with a lb of meat, go for 1/2 lb. make one night a week, meatless. Eggs are a good source of protein.

As you decrease protein, increase the amt of veggies you eat. Try at least one fruit or veggie at every meal. Increase from there.

Decrease your plate size you eat off. Decrease your portions.

Don't buy unhealthy stuff. But don't completely cut out things.
