Healthy Cereal for Preschooler?

Hi. This may sound strange, but my almost 4 yo son has not had cereal. He eats Cheerios plain but isn't interested in having them in milk. But he is interested in having some other sort of cereal now. I want to avoid the sugary ones. Any recommendations? Thanks.

What can I do next?

My son is 3 and loves the frosted mini wheats. They are healthier and taste good just plain to. He eats them in the car on the way to daycare every morning. Plus there are a good variety with them. Strawberry, bluberry, maple, plain, etc. I love them to!

My kids like Oatmeal Squares (has a decent amount of fiber), Life and Honey Nut Cherrios. That is about as sugary as I let them get.

I lije Fiber One Carmel Delights...my daughter likes them as well...good fiber.

Good Luck...ceral is a lifesaver...especially when school starts!!

Kashi has a couple of great Cheerios substitutes (I think it is called Heart to Heart). My three year old loves the cinnamon and honey toasted. They have more fiber and less sugar than Cheerios.

There is also a brand called Barbara's Bakery that makes a great whole grain, Chex-like cereal--called shredded spoonfuls. I believe Barbara's also makes the Puffins (different flavors) which aren't quite as healthy but certainly have less sugar and no HFCS.

My daughter didn't start eating hers in milk until recently either. We aren't a big cereal family and she's really only had it as a finger food until the last few months.

My kids eat the cracklin oat bran. It's not low fat, but I don't mind because it's not an everyday thing for them. They also like the kashi cinnamon version of mini wheats. My kids didn't do well with the kashi type cheerios because they were harder than regular cheerios. My kids are a bit picky.

Actually, if you look at the nutritional information on Kashi's products, they're often not the best. I love their Heart-to-Heart, but I've stopped eating it because it's much higher in carbs than others.

Kix is a great one, and Cheerios has expanded their flavor selections so much in recent years. I personally love the Chocolate ones.

Chex are always good, but it's often a personal preference between rice, corn, wheat, etc.

Granola is often really high carb as are Grape Nuts and meusli.

One thing you'll really want to look for are serving sizes and then nutritional information (calories, fat, sodium, carbs, in particular). Rice Krispies allows you a much larger portion than Frosted Flakes, for example.

We let our kids have Frosted Mini Wheats on occasion, but they're really good about eating things like Special K (if you can believe it).

I hope that helps. Most of my information is based upon 8 years in the world of Diabetes and working with dieticians (as well as a mother with type 2 diabetes and trying to teach her nutritional information as well).

my 5yr old loves plain rice krispies .
frosted mini wheats. Rice krispie treat cereal only has 9 grams of sugar, if you look most cereals kid and adult ones only have 10-12 grams of cereal per serving and that a lot less than say , cereal bars or pop tarts.
I'm a serious sugar watcher , I have an ADHD kid.

All cereals have lots of vitamins and minerals in them. They only eat a small bowl a day, so I don't see the big deal in sugary cereals. Sugar is not an enemy, just don't over do it, as with anything else.

Corn or rice chex. Look at the ingredient list to make sure there is no high fructose corn syrup in it. This is rather unhealthy & surprisingly, even Rice Krispies has it. Annies Bunnies is good, & organic. We do only healthy cereals, but on very limited occasion, I'll let my son (4 also) pick out Cap'n Crunch or something like that. If it's too taboo, down the road they will just crave it more.

Hi-

I've been eating Kashi's blueberry cerealy and it's really good. He may like it. Additionally, Kashi has a lot of really good and healthy cereals you may want to look at.

Crispix! Our family favorite. Also, we eat a lot of frosted mini wheats. My 3 and 5 year olds seem to process it ok. No hyperness or sugar freakouts.
