I am searching for elementary schools with non food birthdays, healthy celebration policies and moms who care about those things? I prefer northern CA, but I would move anywhere not close to Los Angeles. I am a Holistic Health Coach, and nutrition matters so much to me. I really appreciate your responses. We are moving from Missouri. Thanks, R.

Not Sacramento, and not Fresno. I have lived in both places and I'm here to tell you, these are not the places you're looking for.

Probably you'd love Berkeley. We used to live there and I'll just tell you that the elementary school my husband went to had (and still has) an organic kitchen garden sponsored by Alice Waters (of Chez Panisse). Occasionally she'll show up and teach the kids how to cook their harvest. It's a public school. Yes, Berkeley is outrageously expensive to live in, but then... that's where you find schools like that in California. =)

I was going to recommend Berkley too. I am from Northern CA originally, and say Berkeley is one of the more "natural" cities. San Francisco has a lot of variety also. Good Luck to you!

It's California. You'll find that almost everywhere.
If it's SUPER important to you to be only among like-minded people, I recommend LA. Since you say no LA, then hit up Santa Barbara (good luck with the rent), Modesto, San Fransisco and Carmel/Monterey.

Another Northern Californian voting for Berkeley. Very liberal/green/granola type of town. Stay clear of the Sacramento Valley because it's the polar opposite.

Sonoma County. Wine Country, beautiful and best schools.

I have lived in both Northern Ca and Southern Ca.
As far as Northern...
Berkeley, San Fran, Salinas, Sonora, and Napa might be worth looking into. Berkeley is notorious for being "Hippie-ish." Very granola, earthy, all natural etc. Places like Sonora and Salinas are more known for home grown goodness. It's hard to narrow it down because there are towns that are simply beautiful near bigger cities, but may not have exactly what you're looking for.
Southern....
San Diego, Ventura, and some parts of Orange County are worth checking into.
Stay away from (based off the list posted below on Denise P's post)....
Stockton (voted worst city to live by Forbes a few times), Sacramento, Modesto, San Jose, Bakersfield, Riverside, San Bernardino, Fresno.
I do agree with Mary Mission....you can find what you're looking for almost anywhere in California. If you don't find exactly what you want in your City, you can find it 20 minutes away probably.
