Does anyone know of an insurance company that covers short term, 90 days, for pregnancy? My husband just changed jobs and our ins. will run out on Nov. 1, we have looked into COBRA, but no one there can tell us much of anything. We are looking for something that is going to be less than $400-500/month. Most of the companies that I have called said they can not cover me or my husband because I am already pregnant. I am looking for something that would cover me and my little girl...my husband swears he never uses insurance and won't need it:) So any advice or companies that might have worked for you would be awesome! Thanks.

What can I do next?

You need to use the Cobra.... and call his old HR department. They do know and can tell you what it is, you just need to find the right person. I don't know any insurance that'll cover you when you're already pregnant.

Cobra is expensive, but it'll keep you covered. You cannot change the insurance plan though. So if it was a family plan for a PPO then that's what you get. You can't drop members or change to an HMO.

Good luck and get on the phone and make them find the right person to give you answers!

I don't anyone will take you while you are pregnant (except Medicaid). My husband took a new job in a new state when I was seven months pregnant. His new employer needed him to start work before I was due to give birth so they searched and searched for a company that would take me on (their own insurance didn't start until the employee had worked 90 days) and couldn't find anything. I ended up staying in our home state and he would go there during the week and come home on weekends (at his new company's expense). Once I gave birth and the baby I and were released at the 6 week mark, we moved to be with him. By the way, COBRA wasn't an option for us because my insurance at the time was an HMO and they didn't have a network of providers where we were moving to.

Try this: http://www.maternityadvantage.com/form2/benefits.asp

Google: maternity insurance.

When I got pregnant with my daughter I had NO insurance whatsoever and there are plenty of insurance companies for pregnant mothers, doesn't matter at what point you sign up. This insurance is made specifically just for when you are pregnant. Look into it! Hope this helps!

There is not a individual health insurance company that will cover you while you are pregnant. When I left my job I had to COBRA my insurance it ran around $500.00 a month. I did it for 18 months so we could have another child. It is almost impossilbe to get good maternity insurace through an individual policy. I worked for a school district so COBRA was easy if you cannot get a straight answer from his work call the insurance company directly and see if they can help you. Not all companies have to let you COBRA insurance I can't remember the reason, but be prepared just in case.

Your only option at this point is going to be COBRA because you're already pregnant and not getting new insurance at the new job right away. If there was no gap..policy to policy you'd be fine we did that with my son. I would definitely get the COBRA going asap so there's not a single day lapse in the policy. My 2nd pregnancy was twins and I got insurance just to quit and get COBRA and stay home. Policy was exactly the same just more expensive monthly. Mine was only $250/month but apparently that's extremely low compared to normal.

BTW my mom has been doing her own cake business for 30+ years. Purely word of mouth and she does REALLY well. It can be stressful doing it on your own but she enjoys her work. Good luck to you!!

Hi A.,

I'm not sure how it works for a "preexisting condition" such as pregnancy, but my husband lost his job last year and we went to ehealthinsurance.com and were able to find a private insurance plan for our family of 5 and we only pay $412.00/month. The co-pays for office visits are $40, but with pregnancy, they don't usually charge you every time since you go in so often. You might want to look into it and see if there's anything there for you.

Best of luck and congratulations!

Congratulations, A.,for adding a new precious member to your family!
I recommend AmeriPlan. AmeriPlan is a Consumer Driven Healthcare Program or discount health plan, as commonly called. AmeriPlan has the largest discount health provider network in the U.S. with close to 2 million members. It does not matter what stage of pregnancy you are in and AmeriPlan will also save you a lot of money on other health needs for your family (not just pregnancy), including lab, x-rays, hospital, doctor visits, dental, vision, prescription medications and chiropractic. And while you are fortunate that your husband is healthy and never feels he will need health care assistance, life dishes up the unexpected at times. Also, maintaining good health requires regular dental care. You would be able to obtain affordable health care for your entire household with all of these services for only $39.95/month, which would include care for your pregnancy. Please visit our website: www.DNShealth.net . I would be happy to answer any questions you may have to help you determine if AmeriPlan is right for you. ###-###-#### ~ N. Shue, R.N.

A.,

My wife showed me your request and I am glad to help.
I am an agent and I can tell you for sure that you can not start a new policy other than COBRA while you are pregnant. You need to talk to the HR person at the company where your insurance originated. They will tell you how to get on COBRA. It is a law that you are eligible for up to 18 months after you change jobs. Do not let them tell you that you can't be on COBRA. Call the insurance company that has your current policy if they won't help you at the employer. If they won't help then call the State Board of Insurance and tell them what is happening. Don't wait November will be here before you know it.

Unfortunately COBRA will usually but not always be more expensive.
