He Took His Pill!!

so mamas, i don't know if anyone is truly "following" our story but i wanted to post because i am SO excited. my little guy has been having more trouble at school - as i posted the other day, "zero" improvement according to his teachers, since starting his ADHD meds. we had a prescription i hadn't been able to get him to take because it was in pill form. since the patch was out ($300 per month) and the homeopathic drops were out (no improvement at school), we decided to give it another try.

so yesterday i got him to try again. i kept it very low-key and low-pressure. he knows the logistics of "how" to take a pill, we have discussed it multiple times (not to mention trying every trick in the book - we spent an entire week on it a couple months ago). the problem always was that he was convinced he "couldn't" do it. anyway i talked it up real big, how now he is six AND A HALF instead of just six, how much bigger he is now, etc.

anyway, long story short - he says to me I DID IT!!! and we had a little mini celebration, screaming and hollering and lots of hugs and dancing. i had him call his grandma to tell her the good news. while on the phone with her, i noticed - the pill was stuck in the straw in his drink :(

i didn't have the heart to tell him. i kept my mouth shut and "hoped" this would give him confidence to take it going forward.

well today we tried it again. he got pretty frustrated after about 10 minutes of trying. so i told him we'd take a 15 minute break and then try again. again kept it very positive and low-pressure. i simply said, "well since you did it yesterday, we know you can do it. is the sky blue? yep. are your eyes brown? yep. can you take a pill? yep!" (yes i fibbed to him....i felt very strongly this was the right thing to do, so shoot me)

well after our "break", he got right back on it. and after about a minute of trying again - HE DID IT!!!

FOR REAL THIS TIME!! lol!!!

i am sooooo excited. if he can take a pill, then i KNOW we will find something to help him. it just opens up all kinds of other opportunities for us. yaaaaay!

so my required question - any little miracles in your lives this weekend?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Queen - i am cautiously optimistic with you! i'd say the pill affected him more than the other two previous methods (one of which was the Daytrana patch - which i loved for the convenience, so i hope it works for you! sounds like it might!) honestly he was much, MUCH calmer. he did wake up at 3:40 this morning and it took him awhile to get back to sleep...but *fingers crossed*!!!!!! it may have been a fluke too.

I taught my kids how to take pills with mini M&Ms. It makes practice much nicer.

My little miracle is getting the wallpaper off another room. I have three more rooms to go. I HATE WALLPAPER!!

That's terrific.

I got actual sleep last night! My 6.5 week old only woke once, in 12 hours, so I got a solid 6 hours of sleep, and then another two---my three year old woke me up. Of course I feel even more exhausted now, but I'm feeling hopeful that this baby will be a better sleeper than her brother, and he was a terrific sleeper.

I'm really happy for you both! YAY!!!! How'd he do behavior-wise yesterday and today? Any noticeable changes?

My son started his Daytrana patch for the first time today and he definitely had less appetite, but he didn't hurt his brothers at all today, and he hasn't been running around crazy and screaming his head off like he usually does. For the first time I am not dreading sending him to school tomorrow--cautiously optimistic!

Hope things continue to go well for your son!

Dang 300$ for a patch?! Wow...my son was on clonidine patches which were 50$ for 4 and I thought that was outrageous. Good job on swallowing pills to your boy! I remember teaching my then 4 year old the same thing, now he can take all his meds at once!

My daughter absolutely refused any medicine in liquid form.
She HATED IT!!
It was always a fight. Her medicine ended up spilled on her or spit out.

Little did I know, she would take a pill like a champ. She took a drink, then the pill, then washed it down. She wasn't even 3, but she would take a pill over liquid any day.

Different things work for different kids.
Congratulations on getting over this hurdle.
It will get easier as time goes on now.

Whoo Hoo!

Where's the "Like" button? This is great, woo hoo!! I know it's a BIG step forward, and am happy for you and your son :)

Ahhhh, I was planning on making "pirate playdough" as part of our birthday party next week, so went looking for gold glitter to add to it. Instead I found packages at Dollar Tree with little bottles of glitter in them for use on nail polish in 8 different colors, and they have loops on the top. Soooo, for $5 + tax I have twine to loop them on as necklaces, 4 packs of the glitters, extra bottles to make nicer necklaces for friends on real chains, and each child will get their own "pixie dust." Not having to make the playdough for everyone after all, I'm stoked ;)

Have you tried practicing with something like a tic-tac, or putting it in a spoonful of applesauce to just swallow it all down?

I'm sure you have tried many things to help him take pills.... those were just a couple of other ideas....

and congrats! Hope it keeps going smoothly!

My granddaughter started taking pills at 4. She fills her mouth with water, pops in the pill, leans her head back and swallows. I suggest that it's difficult to get enough water in quickly with a straw.

Hooray for both of you! You did right to lie to him!

Might I suggest placing the pill in a spoonful of applesauce? That's how we started. It's easier than milk. :-)
