Having Baby Nightmares

Good morning moms,

I am 39 weeks today with my 1st baby. I have been having some really bad dreams the last couple of nights. One night I had a dream that my water broke, when of course I woke up the next morning & as far as I can tell, it hadn't. Then last night, I had a nightmare that woke me up at 3:30 this morning that my water had actually broken the night before & my baby died. Every little thing is freaking me out, a sharp pain, baby not moving, feeling the need of having to go to the bathroom & afraid my water is going to break (I should be excited not scared). Has anyone had nightmares like that, and how did you deal with them?

Thank you

What can I do next?

With all my kids I had nightmares that someone was coming or going to come and take my baby from me. SO the dreams consisted of me grabbing the baby and running for our lives.

As for the little things that freak you out... sharp pains or baby not moving... those are some reasons to cause concern but just try to relax.

GOD is bringing you to a beautiful experience with an awesome outcome. He will bring you through it and you will be so thankful He did!

Take care and holler if you need and ear.

Before I got pregnant, my boyfriend joked that he was going to invent something that could record my dreams (I have always had hilariously vivid dreams). While I was pregnant, he threw that invention idea out the window because my once hilarious dreams turned into horrible nightmares about our baby dying or being taken away.

It's hard and it sucks, but it's normal to have those sorts of nightmares.

My mom said that she knew with all 3 of us that she was pregnant before taking a test because the baby nightmares started. Lol.

Nightmares late in pregnancy are very common and contrary to the belief of many, they are not a foreshadowing of things to come. Nightmares re: pregnancy are usually an expression of anxiety about some part of the life change that will occur with the birth of a new baby. Relax, and realize that you are not alone.
With my first baby I dreamed that my midwife colleague delivered my baby and she had 8 legs like an octopus. In my dream, my midwife friend just kept saying, "I'll wrap her up in a baby blanket and no one will ever notice." During my first pregnancy I was pretty nervous about having an abnormal baby so this silly dream terrified me. Good news is that my baby was perfectly healthy and without abnormalities. Another dream I had is that I had failed to breastfeed my baby for 3 days after delivery and when I finally did the baby nursed so vigorously that my breasts were stretched out to a foot long and were flat as a pancake. In my dream I had to roll them up like a cinnamon roll to get them to fit in my bra! I was also really nervous about breastfeeding my first. I did have some challenges, but she was able to nurse until 15 months.
So, relax and dismiss those dreams. They are normal. Many of of us have had them. Best wishes for a safe delivery and a healthy baby.

Imagine how many insane worries migrate through your mind at any given time. You are so close to the end of your pregnancy now, and you've never done this before!

Sounds like you need some relaxation time. Go get a pedicure or a facial. A pregnancy massage. Take a warm bath (if your doctor says its ok), sip some feel-good tea. Watch a romantic movie. Go for a short drive with your hubby. This is such an exciting time, enjoy it! No worries!

I was that way with our first. I had a dream that I had my baby and then they (the doctors) took my baby. I could hear him cry but couldn't get to him at all. Then I ran through the hospital that seemed to be under construction and the baby had ended up w/ my younger brother. And it seemed no one was able to see or hear me. It really freaked me out. And I can't remember how many times I poked my belly to get him to move, because I was scared he hadn't moved in awhile. It will all pass, its first time mommy nerves. :) We are prego w/ #4 and I've had weird dreams w/ all of them. I'm sure everything will be just fine. Good Luck Momma. XX

I used to have nightmares where I would drop the baby and the baby would die from head trauma. That was, for some weird reason, my biggest irrational fear was that I would drop the baby. I also now have a fear of heights (I actually start getting dizzy if I look down from a high place) that I never had before I had babies. It's those damn hormones! Just take deep, calming breaths, close your eyes and relax, and realize that they were just dreams. It's scary, but also exciting--you are about to meet your new little one! Congratulations!

I think maybe you are a little scared of the unknown, because well you have never been there before, firsthand, but that is normal honey! It's all gonna be fine and soon you'll have your sweet baby. Try to relax and rest!

Pregnancy dreams are CRAZY, you're lucky if yours just now started at 39 weeks, LOL... you're not alone. In fact, it doesn't end there. I recently had a dream that me and my 3 children were in the car on a bridge, the bridge broke, and I couldn't save all 3 kids from the water. That still haunts me!!

Yes, I had insane dreams during both of my pregnancies, though I don't remember anymore if they were scary or not, just extremely vivid. Just let it go, it's only a dream!

Yeah, I agree, pregnancy dreams are pretty crazy. I once had a dream that my baby was born with 3 arms, but the extra one was sprouting out of the top of his head! And in my dream, it seemed that I was the only one that was concerned about this!!

You are in a constant heightened state of anticipation right now, so every little thing will likely set you off worrying about this or that. A LOT is about to change for you, and that is both scary and exciting. Your dreams are just magnifying your feelings. Trust me, you'll know if and when your water breaks. For most women though, it doesn't break on its own at home like in the movies. It did for me (in the parking lot of the grocery store, lol) but it's more likely to need to be done for you at the hospital. Even if it does break in your sleep though, and you don't realize it until the morning, your baby will be fine. Your body will continue to produce amniotic fluid even after the sac breaks open. But if your water breaks on it's own like mine did, you will likely be having some contractions too. It's pretty hard to ignore those!!

Good luck and congratulations on your soon-to-be newborn baby! Hang in there, you're in the home stretch now :)
