Have You Used "G" Diapers?

Anyone used G diapers from Babies R Us? What do you think? My 2 are out of diapers (except for night) and I'm thinking of going to natural/cloth. Any suggestions? I really would like to find a starter kit and run with it. I'm so overwhelmed. I've read the earlier posts about Bum Genius' and I'm leaning that way. Does anyone have website suggestions or ideas where I can get started? Thanks for your advise!

i have used them, and ... its a love hate thing. i LOVED them at first.
the liner is disposable, flushable, or compostable. i like that. however, most of the time, the liner does NOT hold the poop, it squishes up like... well, the only thing i can think of is i wear pads with wings because the other kind get squished together so much that they are useless. the poop will get in the plastic liner thing instead of just on the disposable liner. if you can deal with having to rinse the plastic liner out of poop all the time, its fine. after all, you ahve to rinse cloth diapers anyway....

also, the disposable/etc liners are REALLY expensive. however, you can use a regular cloth diaper that you can get at like walmart and you can fold it and put it in the plastic liner... :D it seems to work just fine, but again it will always have poop on the plastic liner. minor detail is all.

otherwise, they fit really really well, they arent bulky like most other cloth diapers, the outside pant actually keep pretty clean. the velcro is in the back so its harder for a kid to get them off than if they were in the front...
so.
i hope that helps!

I have heard from several people that they like the G diapers.
I do not use them because they are not completely reusable. I don't want to have to go buy more inserts. I want to buy my diapers and be done, which is a lot of the reason I use cloth.
I hated having to choose between diapers and food on the really tight months, and now I never have to worry, I always have diapers, no need to buy any parts to them.

You just need to evaluate what parts of cloth you want. No, it isn't fun to have to clean them out, however, it doesn't phase me at all. Most of the time stuff just drops out anyway.

The new diapers will not cause rashes like the old diapers. And we now know not to use fabric softener on the diapers. The coverings of the newer cloth diapers whisk away the wetness as well as disposables. My kids get rashes from disposables because of allergies.

Hi K.,

I started right away using cloth diapers, except for the first week or so when I didn't feel like doing laundry. I ordered a dozen chinese prefolds (standard regular) from www. Nickisdiapers.com. They only cost 19.50 per dozen. (or $21 for the premium) They were large on my newborn, so meanwhile I used some Gerber diapers from Target. I love the Snappi fasteners so I don't need to use pins. One tip I found on www.punkinbutt.com about washing is such a time saver: just use a diaper pail bag (not really a pail...just a large waterproof bag) and put the poopy diapers right in there without soaking them first. Everything comes out in the wash! I love it. It's just about as easy as using disposables. It's quite amazing how fast a trash can will fill up with disposable diapers even if you only use one disposable diaper at night.

Another tip: at Nickis Diapers (they're local BTW...SW Wisconsin), get the diaper inserts. They're about $6.50 for 6 of them. They work great to absorb moisture, epecially in thinner diapers AND you can use them for yourself postpartum (or for your menses). I soaked mine in an herbal sitzbath solution (yarrow, uva ursi, witch hazel, comfrey, myrrh, marshmallow root) and froze them over a bowl (upside down) in the freezer. It feels great after all the hard work of birthing!

We used G diapers on our son when on vacation this summer. I liked them onb the first trip, as I was able get by with several days without a washing machine and without having to haul around a lot of stinky diapers. For the second trip however, they seemed to already be too small (even though he was well within the weight range) and they leaked alot so I ended up buying a pack of disposables. As someone mentioned before, they seem to be more work than cloth diapers. At home we use prefolds and bum genius. The Bum Genius are great at night. My son will sometimes sleep 11 plus hours and they never leak! We put a dash of Simple Green or Dawn dish detergent in the wash to prevent detergent build up (which can cause pocket diapers to leak). They are definitely our favorite for night time.

I've been using them for almost a year now on my son and LOVE them. He's a big night time wetter and to simplify my life a bit, I've just used NatureBabyCare brand disposable diapers for overnight (they're a bit more eco friendly than normal disposable diapers) and use the g diapers during the day. I love not having to buy diaper genie refills and love that I can just flush all of the yuk right down the toilet...no stinky smell in the house! We really noticed the difference when we switched over from disposable diapers in the amount of garbage we had every week! We used to be stuffing our garbage can every week and now we have TONS of extra room...it's amazing! They are a bit more expensive, but I think worth it. Also, it's worth mentioning that our daycare center will not allow cloth diapers, but does use my g diapers! I've been able to buy g diaper coupons on e-bay to help cut the expense down and also buy a case (4packages) at a time at our local coop grocery store to receive a 15% discount they offer. Give them a try...you'll love them! Good luck!

I haven't used those diapers myself but if they are they biodegradable ones my brother and sister-in-law use them and seem to like them.

We both use the Bum Genius Diapers. They have had problems with odor but recently found out it could be due to having a front load washer and it not washing with enough water. I have a top load washer and haven't had a problem at all. I soak my icky ones the day before i wash them though too so i think that must help?!

I recently purchased some supplies for my diapers. There are 2 local places you can purchase the diapers and supplies at. If you live east metro I highly recommend Alicia at www.thenaturallifestore.com she operates out of her home on Hwy 95 in Stillwater. Has ALOT of stuff and is really sweet. She also has smaller packs of diapers for trial purposes.

Otherwise, I bought my original supply of diapers at Peapod's in St. Paul. Didn't have alot of help from the staff there but I kinda knew what I was going in to buy.

Hope this all helps you :) We LOVE Bum Genius in this house!

I don't have experience with G diapers, but I do have experience with bumGenius. I LOVE them! I recommend getting them from Nickisdiapers.com. They have great customer service and ship FAST! I have always gotten my order in about 3 days. You might also consider using cloth wipes, if you are going to use cloth diapers. I use baby wash cloths and they work great.

I have a friend that loved them for her daughter when she was little, but she said they don't hold enough anymore. If you are using them at night and your kids wet a lot I would look into a good fitted diaper with LOTS of absorbancy. I have an under the nile and it works pretty well. I would check out http://www.katieskisses.com, or http://nickisdiapers.com.

Good Luck!

I like them, there is a bit of a learning curve. There are plenty of tricks to stop leaking and such on either gdiapers.com or there is a yahoo group for gdiaper users is an awesome resouce too, both sites love to answere questions. I do not use them full time, I like them best for when we are out of the house to use the flushie, but do use them with clothies at home along with bummis and snappies. {My trick: The green mountian diaper infant prefold fits like a dream when trifolded in the snapin liner. I also agree with another poster, green mountian diapers is an awesome site, great diapers, wonderful service and lots of info!)

Hope that helps,

I haven't used 'g' diapers. However I have 4 children, there is a 10 year span between child 2 and child 3, I used cloth diapers for the first two chilren and disposable diapers for the second 2. I would never recommend cloth diapers. My first two children had sore bottoms all the time, sometimes breaking out in bad sores and bleeding. The secomd two rarely had sore bottoms. It is because the disposable diapers absorb the liquids and protect the child's bottom better. I would try pull-ups for them at night if they wet all the time. If you are using them as a precaution and the children don't wet that often then cloth training pants work very well as long as you can get plastic pants for them. I worked in the childrens department of a major department and I know that plastic pants are almost impossible to find.
Check out diapes.com and see if they offer plastic pants, or any other ideas for you.

I also cloth diaper my two toddlers. I would not recommend "G" diapers, but cloth is wonderful. Considering the age of your two, I would suggest a pocket diaper like Fuzzi Bunz or BumGenius so that your kiddos can take them off easily if they need to go potty. They are also cute and will have more of a big-girl feel. I have had much more luck with Fuzzi Bunz as my BumGenius have velcro issues already. Also, they may not fit your older girl. I second the diapearswappers.com suggestion. If you are only using them at night, you could probably get by with just 4 large or XL Fuzzi Bunz, and you could get them cheaply used on diaperswappers. (About $11 a diaper - for less than $50 you won't have to buy diapers again!) Fuzzi Bunz also go quite large in sizes, so you shouldn't have a problem finding one to fit an older child. They also have cloth training pants if you are interested in that option. Feel free to e-mail me with other questions. I highly recommned cloth!

I have a friend who uses gdiapers and LOVES them. So I decided to do the research and look into them myself. DH and I have decided we will use them when we have #2. We live on a farm and burn our garbage. Diapers don't burn so I was always running bags of them to my mom's house when my son was still using them. YUCK! It was not fun. BUT my friend (who also lives on a farm and burns their garbage) says they burn fantastically or you can put them in the toilet. I watched her change her son's diaper to see how complicated it was. She was able to take the dirty one off, unsnap the liner and pull it out, throw a new liner in and snap it and then put the diaper back under him all with one hand. I was impressed by how easy it appeared to be to change them. So anyway these will by far be our choice next time around. Good luck to you!

My sister used g-diapers and abandoned them. Her daughter had skin reactions to them among other issues.

I used Chinese prefolds diapers mostly and then bought a few all-in-one diapers for babysitters to use. When we travelled we used Seventh Generation disposable diapers (they are awesome, never leaked).

Hi K.,

I tried out several different types of cloth diapers, and also g diapers, with my son, and I can tell you how they worked for us...

We did not like g diapers at all. My son was breastfed, and his runny poop leaked out of them. Also, before you flush the insert down the toilet, you have to rip the sides off of it and shake the inside lining out. It was more work than just cloth diapers! Also, the refills are insanely expensive, and getting increasingly hard to find. Whole Foods and Peapods no longer carry them; I could only find them at co-ops.

We have some Happy Heiny's One Size Diapers. These are good diapers, but expensive ($20 for a diapers w/2 inserts). I call them my "Cadillac Diapers". The HH One Size Diapers are great because they have several sets of snaps, so they "grow" with your child, from newborn to toddlerhood. We have 2 Happy Heiny's One Size Diapers, and my son wears them at night. I think they are great diapers, but to buy a complete set of them was cost prohibitive for us.

My favorite diaper system is also the cheapest: a Chinese prefold with a cover. Chinese prefolds are what people think of when they think of old-fashioned cloth diapers. Except nowdays, you don't need to fold them all fancy and use diaper pins. We simply fold the diaper in half the long way, and lay it inside a cover. The 2 brand of covers we've used are ProWrap and Bummis; I love them both.

Whatever diaper system that you choose, you can cut down on clean-up with cloth diaper liners. They are basically thin, gauzy paper towels. You lay the liner on the diaper, and then if the baby poops, you can flush the liner down the toilet. My husband LOVES these.

I bought my cloth diapers and supplies at: Peapods on Snelling & Randolph in St. Paul; Sweet Pickles on the east side of St. Paul (by Sun Ray); and Craigslist. I would recommend going to either Sweet Pickles or Peapods, and seeing the different diaper systems first-hand. Sweet Pickles is great because it is a home-based business, and the lady sat down at her kitchen table and went through all the different types of diapers with me.

I would recommend buying a couple of different types of diapers and testing them out before you invest in them. People have varying experiences with all the brands, and you don't want to be stuck with $400 worth of diapers that you don't like. That being said, Craigslist is a goldmine for cloth diapers and covers, but they sell quickly.

I wash my diapers with a cup of white vinegar. It keeps them soft and helps with the odor. I line dry them.

Good luck.

Hey K.. I haven't personally used "g" diapers, but we do use cloth. Personally, I think those ones look way too expensive and difficult to deal with. I do love using cloth though and one of my favorites is the Bumgenius. I actually found a site that allows you to try out a whole bunch of different kinds for $21 and then just return the ones you don't like- jilliansdrawers.com. If I could start over that would probably be the way I could go. Each person ends up liking different things so it's a great way to try them out. Good luck!

Hi! We used cloth with our first child and it worked fine. We did use a diaper service sometimes (now closed) especially at the beginning. Otherwise, we did the cloth and loved it once we got our system in place- however when #2 arrived it was too much - so we tried the g diapers. I found them a bit difficult - although I know other who use it. For me, I would just as soon use cloth - the wrap still gets soiled and then there is the whole 2 step process of breaking up the diaper liner in toilet. Anyhow, we gave up on the g diapers and went to disposable (totally against our environmental beliefs, but it was what we needed to do at the time). I do have a few g diaper wraps and liners that I didn't want to throw away. Reply if you would want to pick them up - we live in south minneapolis.

Good luck!

I love Bumkins, myself. You can wash them in regular wash cycles, and then hang dry, fluff warm, and waa-la! they are SO easy for my 17 month old twins. A friend of mine directed me to an amazing website that has all the cloth diaper options. I e-mail them my concerns and questions, and they are always prompt and helpful in their response. They helped me choose the best option for me and my twins. The website is: www.babyworks.com. They are very personable, and always follow up orders with a friendly phone call! I recommend them 100%.

Hi,
I've used the G diapers and sort of liked them. What I didn't like was that I had to change the cloth/outer part almost every time I changed her - or everytime my daughter pooped. And, I didn't think I'd have to do that. As far as just pee, they work great.
Probably, if I used them now, when my daughter's poop isn't as messy, they'd work better.
I hope that helps.
I've heard good things about the bum genius and I wish we would have started with those. We are only using disposable now and the occasional cloth.

I have not used the G diapers. I do however use cloth on my toddler and infant. In the La Crescent are there's a diaper service - Small Change Diaper Service. They don't have a website, but a phone call to Carmen can answer your pricing questions. That would be one way to avoid washing your own diapers.
I recommend www.greenmountaindiapers.com as both an informational site and to order diapers. They do offer a starter kit for those new to cloth diapers. I personally use the prefolds from the diaper service and Bummis diaper covers and Thirsties diaper covers. If a diaper service was not available to me I would purchase my own prefolds and wash those myself. Prefolds are highly absorbent and they don't take too long to dry after washing. Hope this helps!
