I have apples that are too soft to eat....GRANNY SMITHS...instead of throwing them out - I'd like to make my own apple sauce....any ideas on how to do it?

I've heard that I need to boil the apples....any advice from there would be GREAT!!!

Oh yeah - if it involves RAISINS - YUCK for me!! :)

thank you in advance!

I just cut up, put into the crock pot and leave it on low overnight. Then I put all the apples in a blender with honey. I have been known to put strawberries and banana in and call it "mixed fruit sauce".

super easy as you will see from all of the responses - just be certain not to put too much water in as apples naturally have a lot so it will get juicy pretty quick - i usually put in just enough juice/water to cover the bottom of the pan so the apples don't scorch.

You can also use older apples for a quick apple crisp - slice up and put in a buttered casserole dish, cover with a mix of oats, brown sugar and cinnamon and some melted butter (enough to moisten everything but not WET it). Microwave for 5-10 minutes until apples are soft. Delicious!

I made it once and it came out awesome.

Peel, core, and cut up 5-6 apples. Get 3/4 cup of water, 1/4 cup white sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Add it all together in a saucepan over medium heat, covered, for 15-20 minutes, or until they are soft. Let it cool, then mash it all up with a fork or masher.

Haha, no rasins involved I promise.

Super easy, heres what I do.

I take the apples and peel them, and cut them into quarters, boil them in about an inch of water, you dont need much, if you do use too much the applesauce can get watery. Then after they are soft pull them out and mash them. I have a foley food mill that I use but you can use a masher, or even a blender. Then add sugar and I put cinnemon in there too. And done. Freeze any that you cant use now.

Have fun!

Its super easy. Just take the skins off the apples, and chop them up into 1 inch sized cubes or so. Take a pot and add just a few tablespoons of water and add the apples and simmer on med-low heat until the apples are nice and juicy. They almost fall apart when you poke them with a fork. Then drain any excess water and throw all the apple chunks into the food processor and voila.

My kids did this in school. They peeled them and more or less chunked them for faster cooking, then put them in the crock pot for a few hours with some cinnamon and some sugar. they really liked it. I bet you could google this and find a recipe, with the exact measurements. allreciepies.com (sorry brain dead tonight can't spell that) but if you can spell it that's a good site.

Homemade apple sauce is easy and delicious. The only thing i do differently than the others that have responded is use 100% unsweetend apple cider instead of water and white sugar. The cider is a natural sweetener and deepens the flavor; to it I add a touch of cinnamon and occassionally a little nutmeg. Depending on the amount of apples you have about 1/4 cup of cider should be enough because you don't want the sauce to be too liquidity. Enjoy!

i make it every year! lots. can it, and you don't ever have to buy sugary grocery store applesauce again. and grannies are the BEST.
i'm okay with it chunky but my guys like it smooth, so after the apples (i too add other fruit sometimes) are soft and i've got the sugar and cinnamon just right, i'll run it through the blend-tec then bring back to a simmer before i can it.
once you do it and see how easy it is, you'll never buy applesauce again.

Oh yeah. It's super easy. I just peel the apples, cut the apple into 8th's with an apple cutter and boil them till soft. I don't add sugar but a lot of friends I know do and then put them boiled apples into a blender until a sauce consistency. A great way to use soft apples.

I won't eat jar applesauce. I only eat homemade. :)

Cut the apples up into small cubes, (about 5 apples), add 1 cup water, 1/2 tsp lemon juice, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 cup of sugar. Stir. Nuke it about 5 minutes on high (uncovered) in the microwave. Stir. Mash the apples down into the liquid. Nuke another 5 minutes. Then use a potato masher to mash it. It comes out fairly lumpy, but wonderful.

yummy! I cut up the apples into chunks or slices. Then add a little bit of water, brown sugar and a tiny bit of cinnamon and cook until they are as tender as you want. I love homemade applesauce. Adding a couple of redhots is good too.

Hi there, I made my own applesauce for my third daughter when I was making her baby food. I got all her recipes off of www.wholesomebabyfood.com. I know you are not a child but it might be a place where you can at least start. If not I would just google home made applesauce.
Good luck!

Yes. If you have an apple peeler/corer, it will be easiest; however if I am feeling lazy I don't peel the apples, I just core them and cut them into 8ths. Throw them into a pot with some water (you don't need to submerge the apple pieces but maybe 1 cup per 8 apples. I have included a basic recipe below. I usually do not add sugar though.

Ingredients

* 6 cups apples - peeled, cored and chopped
* 3/4 cup water
* 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
* 1/2 cup white sugar

Directions

1. In a 2 quart saucepan over medium heat, combine apples, water, cinnamon, and cloves. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes. Stir in sugar, and simmer 5 more minutes.

Mash with a potato masher. If you like a smoother sauce (or you left the skins on), blend with an immersion blender or puree with your regular blender or food processor.
