Have You Bought a Refurbished Gaming System?

My boys are rough with things. They would like an Xbox gaming system for Christmas. I am thinking of going with a refurbished one from Gamestop, but I have never bought a refurbished gaming system. Is it better go new or is refurbished okay?

What can I do next?

All of our game systems have been not new. Some were hand-me-downs and some were refurbished. We got a refurbished PS3 last year that has been running great for over a year.

We tend to use small dealers instead of Game Stop. The little guys do a good job of cleaning out the old system and making sure it's really running well and stand by their work. My husband bought a tablet from the same place that we bought the PS3. We ended up not liking the tablet at all because it was a bit slow and buggy so we brought it back and they gave us a full refund.

You might want to wait though and see how the sales are later in the month before pulling the trigger on anything. Scope out the price of a used system now so you have a reference point. But with XBox One and PS4 coming out in November, you might see HUGE deals on XBox 360 as retailers try to clear those out to make room for the newer systems. If you wait, you may also get a better deal on a refurbished one because the people who need to have the latest and greatest may trade in their old systems for credits towards buying a new one.

We buy refurb stuff all the time. In fact, we just bought the kids computers! We have a play station refurb too..... My hubby is a tech guy, and we always just buy refurb. You save a fortune! So worth it.

My son has bought used gaming systems from Gamestop when he was about 10 -12. He'd resell games, even his own gaming systems and buy other ones. He never had a problem with any of them and probably bought & resold a few systems and probably scores of games. We got to the point where he almost only bought used games 7 systems. it worked just fine!

Be careful with Gamestop because whilst they do a decent job of selling refurbished items that 'work' they also tend to sell things that don't work for very long. I'm not saying this will happen in your case but it has happened with both myself and people I know.

It really depends. I buy new if it is going under the tree but that is really just be being wasteful. I have bought a fair few refurbished systems the *only* problem I have found is they don't clean the hard drive. We got a Wii once that was password protected. It was easy ish to fix but a bit of a pain. Oh not password but parental controls. Poor kid couldn't play some of his games.

As long as you have google skills these things are easy to fix and it saves you quite a bit of money.

Oh the flip side of that Wii, it also had a ton of games downloaded to the hard drive. :)

We bought a refurbished play station 3 but it capped out after about 3 years. The disc reader went bad. Also X box has a new system out, X box one, that all 360 games will be switching to the one format making the 360 obsolete. If you do plan on getting a system I suggest the one as within a year to 18 months they will no longer making games for the 360
