Have You Been Locked Out?

My husband came clean with a three day old story at breakfast. Apparently our son locked him out of his truck and LUCKILY my husband left the moon roof open. I'm STILL laughing about it. I would have LOVED to have seen this happen.

This is one of my MANY fears/issues I have when out with my son.

Have you ever gotten locked out by your kids?

What can I do next?

It hasnt happened to me, but my grandma locked her keys in her car with my oldest in it. She picked him up at daycare for me and buckled him in the car seat and shut the door. Somehow the doors locked and she panicked and called the fire dept. She wasnt thinking because I had a spare key, plus he knew how to unlock the doors and unbuckle himself from the car seat. This happened over 10 years ago and she's been gone for 2 years now, but it still brings a laugh and a tear.

Not me, but my eldest daughter locked my MIL out of her house when she was about 14 months old and then proceeded to unpot every plant (all large, soil-filled potted planted) in the house before unlocking the door.

I walked 3 feet out the front door to get the newspaper and a daycare kid locked me out. I swear that kid shouldnt be allowed to have arms,,.I talked to him thru the door but he swore he didnt know how to unlock it, so I told him he had to go to time out on the couch. I walked around the back of the house and went in thru the patio door that I knew was open. He was stting on the couch in time out. That made me laugh. I started carrying the key in my pocket after that. Never needed it again tho.

Unfortunately yes :(
I had been shopping with my son who was about 3 and daughter who was about 9 months. After unlocking the doors to the car I popped her car seat into its base and (stupidly) stuck the keys in her seat while I walked to the other side of the car to buckle my son in. After I closed his door and started walking back around to the driver's side I heard the unmistakable sound of the doors locking, my stomach sank. I stood there with my hand on the handle ready to open it the moment she hit the unlock button, but that moment never came. I stood there for what feels like forever, in the rain, waiting for her to hit the other button, trying to get my 3 yo to reach the keys, trying to get him to reach the manual lock of his door, waiting for another customer to walk by so I could implore their help, none of which happened. Fortunately it was a small store, with the parking lot right by the door, because I eventually felt I had no choice but to run into the store and have the cashier call for the police. I ran back out to wait by the car in the rain, the nice manager brought an umbrella out to me while I waited. But before the cops could get there my son managed to unlock the door with his toe.
My keys never leave my possession now! What a scary and helpless feeling!

Well, sort of, ok, not really but it's a funny story.... We had flown home to visit our parents with our first born who was roughly 6 months old. I had taken my moms car to go to a hair appointment by an old friend 45 minutes away. My husbands father was coming to pick him and our baby up from my parents house to go hang out while I was gone. I ended up getting a phone call when I was about 5 minutes from the salon with my hubby asking me what the code was to the garage. I told him but it wasn't working and he started to panic. I kept asking what was wrong and he came clean that he was loading his dads car with some things and left our son sitting in his car seat right inside the front door....which was locked. My husband was telling our son that it was ok from the front porch staring in at him through the side windows. I died! I told him to call the police and I'd call my dad. My dad informed us that the code to the garage was correct but when the sun is glaring on it, you have to shade it with your hand. That worked, and hubby, son and my hearts all calmed down once hubby was back inside with our baby;) I can laugh now because the whole ordeal was only like 10 minutes but seemed like an eternity at the time as newbie parents.

This is not from a car, but I have a great story about a boy with Down's Syndrome I used to have in my 0-3 year old class. We kept in touch with him and his family after he graduated from our program.
His parents had always told us how much he loved his Barney videos. They would try to limit how much he watched them. One evening when they went out to grill on the patio, he went over to the door and locked it. They could see him through the glass. He went over to the VCR and popped in his video and sat down to watch it.

YES! It was Easter last year and my daughter was 2.5 and her brother was 6 months, luckily we hadn't put him in the car yet! We were at my in laws and were packing up to make the rounds at my family's house when my daughter climbed in and closed the door. The driver door had been open but the wind blew it shut at that exact moment (don't even ask me why my husband had locked the doors in the first place, he's not always on top of things like that!!). In another stroke of luck, my husband had actually started the car to cool it down so at least she wasn't swealtering to death...we tried to get her to open the door but she didn't understand how to do it so she fell asleep! My husband used one of his sibling's car and drove to our house where my mom met him with her spare garage door opener. He got the extra set of keys to his car and drove back to his mom's house so we could all get in the car and drive back to my mom's! It was horrible, but at least no one (except for me) was too traumatized!!

I had my son lock me in the garage when I went out to change laundry loads. Thankfully it was a warm day so I had the sliding glass door in the back open, we always keep the front door locked, or I am not sure how I would have gotten in as he was unable to figure out how to acutally unlock it. He reached a point where he thought it was so funny after that that we left a spare key hidden in the garage so I could get back in each time. He would turn the garage lights off on he as well until we found a locking thing for the lightswitch. Thankfully we have a light switch to another set of lights in the garage I could turn on.
There have been a few other occasions where we've gotten locked out for some reason or other. We have back up keys tucked in wallets, the garage and we have a couple family members with spare keys just in case. My third is almost at the age where I"m sure she'll discover locks and we'll begin anew.

Well, my son locked himself in the bathroom when he was 3 but I was able to open the lock with a straightened coat hangar. I once locked myself and my baby out of the house (I had him in a baby carrier). But I had my cell phone so my husband came home a little early and let us in. It was a nice day at least.

I have locked myself out before I had kids enough times I am almost obsessive about my keys being in my hand or pocket before closing any door. I'm not really like that about much else.

My daughter about 22-24 months locked herself in the bathroom. I sat outside the bathroom door trying to convince her to unlock it, with no sucess. I called my husband at work and he had to come home and climb through the small window, and remove the lock from the door. She's 16 now, and we still don't have a lock on the bathroom door.

Yes my 2 year old son locked me out of my car. I had set him in there while I walked around to get in my side and buckle him in. I shut the door and he started playing with the door lock button. Fortunately he listened when I asked him to open it. It took about 30 seconds for him to push the button up instead of down but it was the longest 30 seconds of my life.

No, but I just recently locked my inlaws out of their own house. We stopped over to grab a box they had for us (no one was there) and as we were leaving, my husband said he'd come back and lock the door. I said, "No, I've got it!" and flipped the turny lock on the knob, shut the door, and walked out. After putting the children in the car, he said he was going to lock the door...I said I already did...he was like, "How?" Runs back to the door...turns out they all lock the door with the deadbolt from the outside, and don't use the other lock. Turns out he doesn't have a key for the lock. My MIL was having a terrible day, FIL was at work, I didn't want to call ANYONE and own up but I had to! My FIL had to come home from work, dig out the spare key from under piles of stuff on their back porch...oh, I felt so terrible!!!!!!

Yeah out of my apt, one time I locked myself out. I went outside (I used to smoke) and my daughter was asleep in her room. I don't know why but I used to lock the apt door when I went right outside to smoke, I would only smoke when she napped, was at a babysitters already for whatever reason, or asleep for the night. I mean I was blocking the door basically (sitting on a chair on the "patio"). It was a strange quirk. Well, one night I went out to smoke and locked myself out, gir. My apt manager did not appreciate my 930pm phone call, but what could I do. She asked me to meet her at the office and I laughed on the phone b/c I had already told her my child was inside sleeping before she said that...so another awkward moment for her to walk to my apt and give me a spare key. oops.

When I was pregnant, I locked myself out and my neighbor's teenage son jumped the balcony (2nd story apt)... the balconies were connected but separated with iron rod "fencing" to open my patio door (thank god it was unlocked) and let me in haha. I was embarrassed though because my apt was a disaster area. That's another story in itself

Recently my daughter has locked me out of the bathroom and out of my room. The bathroom I have to coax her to unlock so I don't have to pick it with a push pin. The bedroom I have to get my keys and unlock. I just stuck the old front door knob lock on my room b/c I was being cheap and didn't want to buy another door knob, good thing I kept the keys haha. Get a magnetic key box and stick it under your car with a key in it if your afraid it'll happen again. Paying $70 for a guy to unlock the car isn't fun lol.

Out of the house.
Fortunately, I was able to get back in from another patio door, that was open.
Fortunately, the kids did not lock ALL of the house doors.

But we have a spare key outside, hidden.

Or my kids have locked themselves in their room or another room, to 'escape' from ME.
But, those locks are easy to pick open.
Which I do.

My husband went for a walk with our boys and somehow was completely locked out of the house. Luckily our bedroom window was open, so he put our son (2.5) in through the window and had him open the door. But, by the time my husband could run around to the front, there was my son standing in the garage with the dog and the door was closed. So, my husband had to bring him around again, and the second time it worked.

We were gone on vacation and had the neighbor boy coming once a day to care for the cats. When we added on to our house we kept the old back door but now it leads from the TV room to the mudroom. It still had a push button lock but we had no key. The boy locked that door thinking he was supposed to. Then he exited the house out of the new back door.. When he came back the next day he couldn't get in and called our friend who has keys. She came and tried and couldn't get in. She called us in a panic worried that there would be no way to care for the cats until we got home. Fortunately our front door was keyed to the same key they had, we had just never thought to tell anyone.

Not out while my son was in the car, but I turned my car on then some how managed to lock myself and son out in the freeeeeezing cold. The cops came but couldn't get my car open. Luckily, I worked like 30 secs from there. So we were able to go to my job while my sister went and got my spare keys (and a bottle for my son). Wasn't very pleasurable!
My husband on the other hand has locked himself and my son out of the house 2 different times! Once while raining and the other when it was super hot out. He was in too big a hurry and just ran out without his keys.

No but my nanny accidentally locked my daughter in the car when she was getting gas. She has an anti-theft device so when she closed the door, the car auto locked, only her keys were still in the ignition! My daughter was 2 at the time, and she was sleeping in her car seat. It was not our car, it was her car so we did not have spare keys to it. Her husband was at work driving a truck and was far away. She had a friend of hers from her neighborhood drive out to us (40 min away) with a spare key. She stood by the car, thankfully my daughter slept the whole time (and it was moderate temp in the springtime so no danger of overheating or freezing). Had my daughter woken up, the nanny was prepared to break a window to get to her. Luckily that was not necessary, her friend got there with the key before the baby woke up! We were all shaken up by it. This was not an irresponsible person either. We had her babysitting our kids for 4 years, she is wonderful. It was an honest mistake that could've happened to anyone. I guess you just have to sit back and realize even in a worst case scenario, there is ALWAYS a solution. :-)

Well, one day we left, went shopping, came home and the security screen door was locked...huh??? Well, apparently we forgot to tell our Care Provider that takes care of our spec needs daughter to not lock it and she did on her way out! UH OH! Well, the landlord didn't have a key for the back door either! So we had to call a locksmith...now we have keys for ALL the doors! Ugh!

My oldest son was about 9 months old when he crawled in the bathroom, closed the door and pulled out the bottom drawer of the vanity which is right next to the door. My dad took a butcher knife and inched the door closed by stabbing it into the drawer through a little crack in the door.

My youngest son was just a little baby when I put his carrier in the car and threw the keys on the drivers seat while I buckled him in. I didn't think about that when I pushed the lock (we didn't have power locks on that car) and shut the door. I had locked my 3 month old in the car. My dad again came to the rescue and unlocked it through the window seal. It leaked a little and wind blew through it but we got it unlocked.

My youngest locked himself in the bathroom when he was 2. We had just moved into our house that weekend so not everything was put away yet. I tried a coat hanger but couldn't unlock it, hubby was at work, I had to go ask our new neighbor if he could come get the door open. It turned out the door knobs weren't a set so it didn't line up ight to unlock it with a coat hanger. That same day a door knob that unlocks with a key was put on that door.

I locked my son in the house when he was only a few weeks old. We had one of those stupid knobs that will open irregardless of whether the door is locked or not. Why do they even make those? I had to get the neighbor to break in through the window.

Then when my son was 4 I was cleaning the car and he was playing in there and he locked himself in. He was smart enough to know how to unlock it and sat in there laughing at me while I was yelling at him to open it. I wasn't overly concerned since I knew eventually he'd open it and it wasn't a hot day.

Glad to see I'm not the only mommy who has done this!!! haha :-)

At age 2 my daughter locked me out of our house as I was sending off my school age children to carpool. Luckily, I had my cell phone with me. After calling 911, my husband suggested taking a hammer and knocking a hole through the garage wall, reach inside the house and unlock the door. I managed to rescue my daughter before the police arrived. Even the police officer was impressed with my husbands genius. The wall was easy to patch up, where as breaking a glass window could be costly and dangerous.

If you ever are stuck in a situation, my husband, who is an electrician, says to aim the hammer 6 inches or so directly underneath a light switch. The wall will be hollow there and most likely the wiring is stapled to the stud.

My son was about 9 months old, all squirmy, and would fight me when I tried to fasten him in the car seat, so I had a habit of giving him my keys to play with so I could do what I needed to do with no fighting. One day we were on a road trip, coming home from visiting my mom, in the middle of NOWHERE...it was kind of cold, but I was just running in and out of the car to make a quick trip to McDonalds to use the restroom, change my son's diaper, and grab a coffee, so I didn't bother with my own coat. I just hurried (son was properly dressed and had his blanky though). Well, I put him in the car, closed the door and was going to put the diaper bag back in the front seat, arrange things comfortably, then get my keys and hit the road. As I closed one door and reached for the other, I heard the beep. My son pushed the button on my key ring and locked me out. It was in the 40s, had just started a light rain, I'm in the middle of nowhere with a long way to go, and am in a tshirt! I froze....my son was all snuggly and bundled up with his teddy bear, lovey, and blanky, all smiles, but I was terrified. I went to the McDonalds girl, who must have seen the look on my face because even though I tried to be cool, she stopped waiting on someone to ask what I needed. I told her I needed the police, that I'd locked my son in the car. She called the nonemergency number she had right by the phone b/c she said it happened fairly regularly. I stood out in the rain because I was scared to leave him outside, wanted to make sure he stayed warm and happy, wasn't scared. He thought it was a game and laughed. The police came in like 2 minutes, but couldn't get the thing open. A locksmith had heard the chatter on the radio and came by in about 10 minutes (which were VERY long minutes). He opened it the first try, and did not charge me when I asked how much. The police didn't chastise me, either. I think they knew I was a little traumatized, lol. All I could think was that I'd have to break a window before anyone came to help me, had it been summer time...I wouldn't let him sit in a hot car! Fortunately, he was all smiles and giggles, nice and dry this time. I NEVER gave my kids my keys again! The day I got home, I stopped at Walmart and got him his own plastic keys. We also hid a key outside, and another in our garage, in case they lock the house doors on us (never happened, but just in case).

We only use the deadbolt on our back door. Well I let my dog out and it was raining so he doesn't go to the bathroom. So I went outside to walk him around until he peed. He did and I went to go back into the house and the door knob lock was locked. I'm locked out and my daughter, I think she was under a year, was still inside (thankfully in her crib). I managed to find the one window on the first floor that wasn't locked and I broked out the screen and climbed in through the window. Our babysitter from the night before locked all the locks on all the doors. I went out that day and bought one of those keypad lockbox that you put a spare key in to put up near my garage. This was over a year ago, and I still haven't taken the taken the lockbox out of the package.
