Has Anyone Used Diflucan for Child's Toe Fungus?

Hi,
My 4 year old has had two toe nails that have been thick, yellow and flaky for over a year. It started out as athlete's foot and we used an anitfungal cream recommended by our pediatrician. The athlete's foot went away after a few weeks but the discolored nails remained. We went to a pediatric dermatologist and he said with kids it could just go away without any treatment, but it could take a few years. He said it is not contagious and he can run around bare foot at the pool.

He gave us a prescription of Diflucan (fluconazole) an oral antifungal. He would take one 2.5 ml dose once a week for 12-14 weeks. It should clear it up by then. He said since it is such a small does there are little side effects. He said it was up to us we could give him the meds or just wait it out.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a child who took Diflucan for toe fungus. Or has anyone had a child with toe fungus that cleared up on its own. My son doesn't seem bothered by the nasty looking toes and it is not painful to him. Otherwise he is a happy, healthy kid.

Thanks,
S.

Hi, S.:
That med is powerful. Had you thought about getting some T-Tree Oil and putting it on the toe or there's a toe fungus oil in a bottle that you can
put on the nails.
Hope this helps. Good luck. D.

Hi there I would avoid using strong medication prescription strength for a child's toe fungus as it can cause liver damage. I would stick to home remedies on this one. You can clean it well with soap and water then rub vicks vaporub on it here is an interesting article that could help treat and prevent future issues. http://www.itsamomsworld.com/school_age_health_toenail_fu... here's another one http://www.endtimesreport.com/homerem.html. Another one is to soak the toes in Listerine mouth wash. Good luck.

Hi S.,
I have taken Diflucan myself for yeast issues, but not for toe fungus. Have you tried giving him probiotics and applying either Grapefruit Seed Extract and/ or Tea Trea Oil to his nails? I would give those a shot before giving him Diflucan. It's pretty powerful stuff. Make sure you read about the possible side effects/ contraindications before giving it to him.

Good luck!

My son took Diflucan for thrush when he was only 2-3 months old... (several rounds of Nystatin didn't work) He was perfectly fine... I wouldn't be so worried about a 4 year old. Doctors are hesitant about prescribing it the first, but it does the trick. Follow your instincts and do what you think is best. Good luck!

You may also want to try Formula 3. It's an oil you pain directly onto your son's nails. It takes a little while to dry, but my nails looked much better right away. (I can tell I picked up some fungus on my 2 big toes from a nail salon) I got it at the dermatologist's office... Also- I've heard tea tree oil works well also. Good luck!
