Has Anyone Read This Book?

I purchased the book by Jenny McCarthy called Louder Than Words. I then got an email stating that it wouldn't be released until August. I was wondering if anyone already had the book or knew if this was true. Also, is the book good and helpful. My daughter has ECI coming in because she's almost 2 and not talking. Not even saying words. Since ECI has been in she's trying to talk. I know she is definetely delayed, but I just really really can't believe she has autism. She is EXTREMELY affectionate with everyone, especially me. She loves to play with other kids and adults. The only red flags were the flapping of her hands when she gets excited and not saying words. Like I said before, she is definetely trying to talk now. It's hard to understand what she's babbling about, but I'll take that over nothing. She had a lot of really big changes around her first birthday and we've been told that that could have delayed her. So here I am trying my hardest to get her the help she needs and trying to educate myself on everything that can help. Has anyone else changed their child's diet and gotten the results Jenny got with her son? Any advice would be so appreciated. Thanks in advance

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great responses Moms!! NO AUTISM!!! We finally pushed to get her hearing tested and she has fluid on her left ear and was hard to hear the quieter tones. So, we are now looking into tubes in the ears. She has progressed so much since I posted this request. She is immitating more and trying to copy words we say (what she thinks she hears). I really appreciate all of the help you all have given me.

I have the book and read it 3 months ago. It is amazing and a must read for all MOMS.
My nephew has autism and my SIL has an awareness website www.camsvoice.com that has a wealth of information. She is VERY active and educated with treatments and options etc. My nephew has been treated similar to Jenny's son and is recovering from his heavy metal poisoning.
Now is the time for you to begin since treatment is most effective under age 6.
Removing chemicals and toxins from your home and her personal care products is also essential if you have not already done so. You can visit www.LiveTotalWellness.com/texas to request information on a safer alternative place to shop that is cost effective.
Good luck on your journey,
M.

My five year old son, Gabe, has autism...we found out last October. He is also extremely affectionate and so loveable but does have his bad days where the autism shows. I checked out the book at the library but with the autism being "new" for us I teared up everytime I tried to read it. I have not changed his diet, just the way I teach him. When the school did the ARD meeting they took him from all day Kindergarden and put him in a special class in the morning and he stayed in his kindergarden class in the afternoon. On Thursdays he does speech therapy and will soon be doing occupational therapy. At night we get on disney.com so he can play video games and learn, this is after we work on puzzles, paperwork, etc. There are two sites that we also go on for Gabe to learn, starfall.com and dltk-teach.com. These have helped Gabe with his speech, etc. There was a mother in Lewisville who helped me out a few weks ago and I have since received a book of resources from Lewisville ISD, (very helpful). I hope some of this helped and if you would like to chat more just shoot me an e-mail.

Hi K.,

I have taught special ed for a few years and have seen children improve with proper intervention. I wish I could state 100% that the GFCF diet was the magic ticket, but most of the children I worked with were 3-6 years of age and the parents were doing several interventions, understandably so, making it difficult to pinpoint the 'one' thing that helped. I will say that just in the past 3 months we have gone to a GFCF diet for our girls, not for AU, but because my youngest (2 years) showed sensitivities to foods with gluten and caisen in it. I use to describe my DD as having a 'quiet intelligence' because she only showed progress in spurts, not consistently like my DD that is three. Just in the past 3 months, I describe her much differently. She has a brighter affect, in her eyes and demeanor. She is like exploding in skills and communication. I can only attribute that to this diet. Her skin is clearing up and she has not had any ear infections since, which is why we even tested in the first place. I have some recipes if you need them. It is overwhelming at first, but many have gone before us and it is not so bad now. Market Street also holds classes for cooking with alternative grain, etc. I am going to take one and see if that helps even more. They also have a special diet aisle with gluten free goods on it...Sprouts is good also. It is great that you are getting intervention now....let me know if you need any resources...I have a great pedi that works with children with AU regularly...she will do altered vaccine schedules and has even not given the MMR to my DD until she is 'well'(even though I did not know she was not well, but we need to clear her system of the 'toxins' first, I guess). Hope this helps......keep in touch if you need ____@____.com

I have not read the book, so I can't really say too much about the actual book itself. I will tell you, the autism world is full of controversy--from causes to "cures." Most of the "treatments" are very costly, and often not studied for effectiveness. Also, every child on the spectrum will progress differently & have different issues, and each child will benefit only from their own, unique plan of treatment.

Since your child is progressing & seems to be doing pretty well, I would continue what you are doing. Focus on sensory integration is my best advice, along with visual cues (PECS cards or sign language--along with verbal speech therapy). Also, what works for one child, may not work for another. Our daughter has always had delays and issues, so we don't feel her autism is because of vaccines or anything environmental (that said, we eat organic and use "green" cleaners).

If your child is not a picky-eater, then I would try the GFCF. ABA therapy has also been helpful for many kids (Floortime was what we did when our dd was very young). I do have some favorite autism books I can gladly recommend:

Ten Things Every Child With Autism Wishes You Knew by Ellen Notbohm
My Friend With Autism by Beverly Bishop
Making Peace With Autism by Susan Senator
The Autism Answer Book by William Stillman
The Autism Acceptance Book by Ellen Sabin
The Game of My Life by Jason J-Mac McElwain
The Out of Sync Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz and Lucy Jane Miller (and The Out of Sync Child Has Fun also)

I have heard that the book is great. I am currently waiting on it to come in to the local library. My 4 year old has recently been diagnosed with autism and it has really rocked our world. We are considering the diet, but it's hard. My son will only eat the things that he shouldn't. He was on track with other miletones, such as crawling, holding up head, walking, but not talking and he also flaps his hands when he gets excited. Now we have autism and at this point we are devistated but dedicated to bating this. I would recommend the book and the diet, even though we are not on it yet, there are just too many accounts and testimonials from parents that say it works, but on the other hand it is alot of work. I wish you the best of luck. ____@____.com if you wanna chat more.
