Has Anyone Experienced Z-pack (Azithromycin) Side Effects? Insomnia?

My son, who turned two years old today, is on his fourth day of azithromycin for bronchitis. The medicine helped his cough immediately and he obviously felt better, but my usually wonderful sleeper (usually about 8 or 8:30 pm to about 6:30 or 7 am and about 2 to 3 hours at naptime) had a terrible night last night. Maybe he was just overstimulated from our family birthday party yesterday evening and was super-well rested (took a 3 hour nap yesterday until 4:15), but he was awake last night pretty much solidly from 9:45 pm to 2:20 am last night. It was bizarre, and I tried everything to get him back to sleep. Today at naptime, he was awake yelling "Mommy!" and crying for an hour (with one brief check-up from Daddy), after getting only 6 hours sleep last night (we woke him about 8:20). When I went in at naptime, I calmly told him that it is not okay to yell and cry at naptime, that it's a time for sleep and I rubbed him back while he laid back down. Then I told him that if he laid down and quietly went to sleep, I'd give him a lollipop after naptime and asked if he would like that (we do very little sugar and still have some dum dums from Halloween). He said, "uh-huh" and lo and behold, he went right to sleep when I left.
Is he just testing things because he's a big two year old now and is persistent, or did he have insomnia and or stomach pains from the z-pack (not too uncommon according to the internet)? I'm going to run to Whole Foods and look for a children's chewable probiotic, but was wondering if anyone else has had bad experiences with z-pack turning children into sleepless (yet pretty happy) zombies. Thanks mamas!

So What Happened?

After that day, I started ending his naps at 4:00 and that helped a lot (he can't sleep more than about 2 1/2 hours at naptime without having problems at night). Thanks for your help!

I think you need to cut back on the naps. My kids have had a lot of Z-pack/liquid azithromycin and the only side effects were the belly aches. I agree with the other posters: is he on any OTHER medication in addition to the Z-pack? That might have caused the insomnia.

You didn't mention if he had any other complaints when he was up...belly ache, tooth ache, head ache...could have been something else going on too.

If you think that this is causing the insomnia, then I would suggest giving him the medicine in the morning with breakfast. It's only a serving a day. I know there is quite a bit of sugar in that solution so that alone might be your culprit!

I would never take this or give this to my children. A friend of mines 19 month old son was given this by a doctor for an upper respiratory and ear infection on the 21st of December and he did not wake up the next morning. The gave him this and it killed him during the night. This one he was given by the doctor was meant for adults and now he is dead. His parents and siblings and friends and family had to bury this baby 2 days after Christmas rather than watch him open his gifts Christmas morning and watch him playing with his toys 2 days later, he was being put in the ground instead of enjoying his gifts and family.

I've never experienced any insomnia with my kids and z-packs. Is he taking any other over the counter meds for his symptoms? My son would get super hyper on cough syrup when he was little. Call your pharmacist and ask them about the side effects. He or she might have some great information for you. Good luck!

sounds like awful powerful meds for a 2 year old. that techinally is adult medicine I'd get a second opinnion. I do not believe it should be used on children .

if he's on a Zpack, is he also taking an antihistamine or decongestant?....that could be the culprit.

As for the nap, WOW, that's a long nap! & figuring in the family party....that gives you a double whammy. Seriously, you could be looking at a combo of "unusual" events culminating in a sleepless night.

BUT, I will say that with myself, my children, & my daycare - I am consistently seeing behavioral changes when taking antibiotics. For myself & my children, we all take maintenance allergy meds...so the only change is adding in that antibiotic. The same holds true for some of my daycare kids. And for myself, I have totally psychotic dreams when using the antibiotics. For the kids, they are hyper beyond belief! Red-cheeked, flushed face (which I get), bouncing off the walls. Quick to cry, quick to fight -it's a lot like when I'm battling a round of intense PMS! And it all ends once that antibiotic is out of our systems. It happens with Augmentin, Zpack, .... and many others. I'm to the point where I HATE taking antibiotics!

So, give your baby time to get thru these drugs & hopefully all will normalize! Good Luck!

Check with your pharmacist about typical side effects of the antibiotic, they are going to be your best source of information. I work as a clerk in a pharmacy and I know that the usual symptoms that I hear discussed at possible stomach upset ( they suggest taking the med with food) It can also cause loose stools, so some yogurt might be a good idea. My guess is that this is just coinciding with some major changes that are going on in your 2 year old....probably cutting some molars, which can disrupt sleep.
