Has Anybody Had the Mirena IUD?

I had the Mirena IUD from February 04 until December 05 and had nothing but problems with it, I am wondering if anybody else had a similar problem.

First off I gained a ton of weight from it, which is rare, but it is a side effect. I also bled non stop for the first 7 months with it and then didn't have another period until a couple weeks after I got it removed last year. Since then my cycles have been wacky, I don't ovulate every cycle, and my cycles are between 34 and 59 days! We have been TTC since getting that evil thing out with no luck.

Did anybody else have a bad experience with Mirena?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everybody for your responses! I wondering why in the world I was gaining so much weight (60 lbs total in the almost 2 years I had it) despite diets, working out, etc.. and now this problem afterwards with TTC.

I lost about 15 lbs by doing NOTHING in the 2 months after removal and since then I've kind of been stuck. Doctors claim is sooo safe and hardly any side effects and how its the perfect easy birth control. I too read everything I could find about IUDs and only now finding out I am not alone and there ARE side effects. I will find out about the pill to try and regulate my period. Thanks all! :)

I had the Mirena IUD for two months. It completely stopped my periods all together. I had it taken out in July of this year, and have only had two normal periods. With the amount of progesterone it has, it's almost a sure thing that it's gonna mess your cycles up. If your TTC, and obviously you'll want to talk to your doc about this, but you should try two cycles on birth control pills to regulate you. I did that after I had been on the depo shot, and got pg the first try. My cycles took a good 4 months to regulate after I got the IUD out (without BC to regulate me). GL I hope your blessed with a pregnancy soon!

ohhh, I DID!!!! I hated it. It was 1 full year of misery! I would have 2-4 periods a month... I would go MAYBE 5 days a month with no bleeding... it was hell! Once I finally convinced my OB to remove it, it took my body about 5 months to even out. My new OB/GYN put me on Yasmine in hopes that it would help with my periods, and it really worked. Try going on the pill for a couple months just to regulate your cycle. I know mine wouldnt have ever evened out if I didnt!

I have and IUD without hormones. I'm not exactly sure what a Mirena IUD is but I love mine. Know problems yet! I wanted to tell you I have a two year old little girl who will be 3 on the 7th of February! I wanted to ask you what you are going to do for her third birthday? My seven year old and I were discussing what to do for Emily's thrid birthday. Any ideas?
Talk to you soon. Steph

its not just the mirena, iud's in general, come with a host of possible problems. I had one and it actually fell out after one month. I had a friend who had to have a d&c, for what reason i'm not sure. I had a friend who had a uterin abrubtion from the iud, meaning it tore through the wall of her uterus ending up in her abdomen, pressing on her large intestine. If you are continuosly having problems, maybe it is just not the birth control for you and you should consider switching.

Hi A.,

I had one put in a year ago this past November. Now I know what the hell is going on!! I have gained 35 lbs, had the worst periods of my life and my sex drive has slowed down to a crawl. I thought I read and understood everything about the I.U.D., but you've really opened my eyes. THANK YOU!!!!!! Time to remove this horror from my body. Depo didn't work for me and taking a pill every day is annoying, but I've got to figure out something.

I wish you much luck and success in regaining YOU again.

Sincerely,

S.

Is that what happened to my sex drive???? I thought I was horribly depressed or something. I have had the Mirena for a little over a year now, I have loved it thus far, I only get a little spotting here and there.

oh my god i thought i was the only one! ive had it in for a year and a half and at first i bled for a week, would have 3 or 4 days off and bleed for another week, that lasted about 3 months and then i had no periods for almost a year, however i always knew when i was supposed to be having my period because my emotions were all over the place (crying at comercials that werent even touching, getting so angry ive letraly seen red) for the last 3 months or so i have had a period, well, spotting for 3 days flooding for 4 and spotting for 3 more seriously i hate it, ive gained weight, my sex drive has gone way down and my hubby can feel it in certin positions. i cant wait to get it out (at the begining of feb yea!!), i dont have insurance and just recently stopped breastfeeding my daughter so ive been kinda stuck with it for a while, but if you are considering it, dont do it!! it has seriously been the worst birth controll ive ever used!

I had that awful thing for about five months after my daughter was born (she's now four) and did not have a period for the whole five months.
That all changed one day when the cramping and the bleeding started. Within 24 hours, my body had expelled that thing 1/2 way out. When I went to my doctor, she said, "oh yeah, that rarely happens." Please note that this side effect was not mentioned to me when they put that thing in. The lesson, explore all facets of everything medical before you take the doctor's word.
