Hard Floor Cleaners

I am looking for a new mop/hard floor cleaner. We have tile and wood floors. I've been using the Swiffer wet jet on the tile, and it doesn't clean good at all. If there's anything on the grout, it won't get it off. I use a "mop" with a terry cloth cover for the wood floor, and it does ok. Is there anything that I can use on both? I was thinking about the Shark steam mop. Any suggestions?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I think I am going to buy the Shark mop for the tile and see how everything goes.

Hi A.,

I got handscraped hardwood floors at the beginning of this year, and what the flooring company recommended to me was Bona. You can buy the kit with the mop, a duster pad and a cleaning pad, and a spray bottle cleaner. Bona makes the wood shine and cleans really good. Bed, Bath & Beyond sells it, and you can get 20% off if you have one of their coupons. The kit is about $30, and the spray will last you a long time. You can also buy a 64 oz. refill for $13.

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/search/search.aspx?order_...;

If you have "real" hardwood DO NOT use water with or without soap, it will stain the wood. If you have laminate or vinyl hardwood, Bona has a product you can use both on tile and laminate and vinyl floors.

Hope this helps!

I got the shark for my hardwood floors. I absolutely love it. It dries as fast as it's wet, so you don't have the problems of wet mopping on wood. It doesn't use cleaners, so the floors stay clean longer. The only thing is that it takes muscle. It doesn't glide over hardwood as easily as it does on tile. It's worth the effort though.

I have a Shark steam mop and love it. I have tile and laminate wood and it works great. It doesn't clean the grout, so you'll have to find something else for that, but it does clean the floors really well and without any chemicals, which I love. On hard woods, you would want to try in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it's not too hot for them. It could leave a mark if you were to hold the mop over the area for too long of a time, but it does say it can be used on hard woods. I would suggest buying it at BB&B since you can use a 20% off coupon and only end up paying $65 for it.

I just bought the sonic scrubber for use on my grout and it works really well too. I just spray some cleaner and use the scrubber and it works good. Hope this helps.

As someone who has spent my entire career in the hardwood flooring industry, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not ever use steam or water products on your hardwood floors - unless of course, you want to replace them in short order!
There is a product you can get at Home Depot or Lowe's made by a Bona Kemi called Bona-X. It is applied with the same terry cloth cover over a "sh-mop" and that is suitable for most hardwood floors with a urethane or no-wax finish on them. Please try to stay away from the cleaners marketed for hardwood floors that you find in grocery stores, as they tend to leave a residue on the flooring that only attracts more dirt and oil from your feet and will leave your flooring looking much worse than when you started and is very difficult to restore the original finish. Tough, sticky spots can be cleaned with acetone and then with the Bona product afterword. Though I am not well versed on the care and maintenance of ceramic tile, I have heard that a solution of vinegar and water on a slightly damp mop or "sh-mop" applicator is great for cleaning both the tile and grout. I use tilex when I have a particularly difficult spot on the grout, but I don't know that I would suggest something that toxic while you are still expecting. Good luck!

I use a mixture of Solumel and Melamagic and hot water...it works great (it's very strong) and it's safe...My pets and children are safe if they touch it before it dries, because it doesn't contain any chemicals or toxins!

I have just had Bruce hardwood and granite tiles installed in my house. My floor installer cautioned me to never, ever use soap on the hardwood. His recommendation is to use warm water with a small amount of vinegar. I have tried it and it seems to work well. Of course, I don't have long-term effects yet, but I'm trusting the floor person.

I didn't have a chance to read the other responses so someone may have already suggested this. A friend of mine recently bought the shark steam vac. It cleans only with steam. She uses it on her wood laminate and ceramic tile and loves it. Says her floors have never looked better. Good luck!

vinegar water. The smell goes away as soon as it is dry. You might put more sealer on the grout.

I also use Swifter and I'm really bothered by the expense. I'm thinking of using the steam mops, but I'm worried about the glue getting loosened on my floors. I don't want to use a mop because it just gets too dirty. So those are my concerns.

Try the shark mop they sell them at bed bath and beyond and also at best buy they work totally on steam and are safe on wood floors. I have one and you should see the dirt that comes off my floor you would think that i had never cleaned them before I have been reading some of the other resposes and just my advice (my husband is in the ceramic tile business)and never never use vinegar on your tile it will ruin the grout

I got one of the original Swifters when they came out and it was a farce.

I've used a Hoover Floormate for several years now. I'm on my second one. I'm surprised no one mentioned it.

With all the Shark steam mop recommendations, I may have to research it when it's time to replace the Floormate.

I use an old fashion looped end mop that slides to ring it out. I think I got it at walmart. I use all Shaklee cleaners. Basic H2 on both wood and tile floors, countertops, sink, windows, etc...

Hello, I am a self employed mom who has owned a cleaning company for the last six years. We use fabulosa on tile floors and murphys oil soap on hard woods. I would suggest using 2 separate mops. One for tile and one for wood. A steam mop would work great on your tile and would also get the dirt out of the grout but don't use it on the wood. Possibilty that the heat will cause the boards to warp. Be blessed

NO, Swiffer leaves a residue that can get all over everything. I swear by the Method system. They have a microfiber cloth. One for wood and one for other floor types. Cleans wonderfully and guess what. Its non-toxic and biodegradable. A must in a household with kids.

Hi A., I professionally clean tile & grout. You probably need a thorough grout cleaning first and then have the grout sealed with a good sealer. Once you do that, I recommend using a Bissell Steam Mop to maintain not only your tile & grout but also your wood floor as long as the wood floor has been sealed, which I am assuming it is.

If you would be interested in a free estimate to clean your tile & grout and to seal the grout, please let me know. I offer excellent, guaranteed workmanship and reasonable prices. I also offer mamasource members a 10% discount and half off grout line sealing. You can reach me (N. Stout) at ###-###-#### and get more information on my website at www.TheTurboTec.com. I have multiple references, including mamasource members. Thank you, take care!
