I am thinking about purchasing 2 handheld gaming systems for our twin 6 yr. olds (1 boy 1 girl) for Christmas. I don't want to spenda s much as a DSI costs. Any suggestions? I see that Fischer-Price has a new system available, but will my 6 yr. olds get bored with this system? Any help would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

You can always buy a used DS at a store like Game Stop. My kids love them. We have to limit their use. Otherwise, they'd be playing all the time.

Try a Leapster, made by Leap Frog. Less expensive than the DSI, but still fun. I have to tell you though, those DSI's are awesome! I bought one for each of my kids (Aged 6.5 & 11) a few months ago...it keeps them busy! My 6 year old son had the Leapster before the DSI, he'd had it since he was 4, but around age 6 got bored with it. Could've been his age, or the fact that he'd had it for 2 years. :)

i have a vtech smile handheld game for my 4 & 6 yr old. they have all age ranges like the leapster. they don't play with them and i have an assortment of games like spongebob, scooby, dora, tinkerbell, ages from 2 all the way to 8. my husband bought me the dsi xl and that's all my kids play with. they fight over it. what i have done instead of going out and buying 1 or 2 more is that my daughter gets it before schoo and my son gets it after he gets home until she gets home. they have a ton of different games for boys and girls and also educational ones. they also have downloadable games for cheap points and the dsi lite will play gameboy advance games (which you can get cheap) and the bigger 2 have cameras built in. they all have speakers so you can record you voice and they all have wifi and also can play 2 player games by connecting over the wifi, etc. for instance they can both play mario together when the cartridge is just in one ds. one can be mario the other luigi. if you go to gamestop, you can get a refurbished one for cheaper than the $129 you would pay for the lite. but there is a HUGE difference in screen size between the lite and xl.

Having 3 older kids I agree with some other posters. Get the DSI. Every kid is different but I beleive they will get bored with the others. The DSI will last a long time, they can link to each other it has a camera.

We like the Leapster, though our son does burn through those games more quickly than those on the DS (he has a hand-me-down DS from a friend who got a DSi). I would never have bought our kid a brand-new DS. The Leapsters are a great product and they are significantly less expensive. Our son plays with the Leapster AND the hand-me-down DS. Now he's lobbying for a Wii (which he's not going to get any time soon). It's never-ending no matter what you do, so I say stick to your principles.

Definitely do a DS or DSi. Maybe look for used ones. They are too old for the FP systems.

Definitely spend the money on the DS Lite or the DSi! There are bazillions of games and it will last them for so much longer!!!! They are too old for the Fisher Price systems. My daughter outgrew her little handheld when she was 5! Santa brought her a DS Lite that year and she adores it! She's about to turn 7 and there are still tons and tons of games she wants. You will be so glad you did! Trust me! =0)

***Oh! And another huge perk to the DS systems is that they will be able to link up and play together!!! =0)***

I agree with Carrie, the DS systems are great. You may pay a little more upfront, but the leapfrog will not last long. Besides there are a TON of games for the DS!

I think that 6 year old will get bored with the other systems. I would go to gamestop and purchase 2 used DS (not DSi's)... which would make it less expensive all around. If you buy one of the toy systems and your children bore of them quickly, you will end up buying far more games faster than if you had just bought the DS system.

I would definately go with a dsi. I just purchased one for my 7 yr old on craigslist. It was a ds lite with 7 games all in perfect condition for $100. I bought my 5 year old a ds lite off of craigslist last year with 3 games for $70 all in perfect working condition. If you take the time to research you can find some good deals.
