Hand Me down Underwear?

I just read someone else's question about hand-me-down clothes and it got me thinking about something. A few days ago we were given a bag of hand me down clothes. My sister had a friend give her a bag of clothes and they were not the right size for her daughter. They happened to be my daughter's size, so she gave me the bag of clothes. They were nice clothes, and I am happy to have them. Half my child's wardrobe is hand me down's. But there were a few pairs of underwear in there. I was going to throw them out because I just don't like the idea of putting "used" underwear on my daughter. Hy husband laughed and said just wash them and I am sure they will be fine, or throw them out. How do you ladies feel about this? Would you put hand me down undies on your child?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the input ladies! I agree, the undies are going in the trash!

I don't know what answers you received but there is nothing wrong with hand me down underwear. My children have been using them for a long time. As long as they aren't stained I see no reason to not use them. It is a waste to throw something that is not in bad shape away. If you have issues with it, then donate them to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Don't throw perfectly good clothing away.

This is one of those things that is personal preference. When I was pregnant I had to special order my bras. (they had their own zip code) I got a lot of my pregnancy clothing from second hand stores. My mom told me to try to find a bra at one of these stores. I had the same reaction as you.. "ARE YOU INSANE MOTHER"
She laughed at me too. I know she is my Mom and I should listen to her, but that was some advice I decided to not take.
There is just something icky about wearing someone's hand me down under garments. I'm not saying it is wrong. I'm just saying it is wrong for me and my family. but keep in mind, I won't even drink after someone. My family thinks I'm a freak about it. Good luck.

Underwear is cheap enough to go buy her own! Who knows how many accidents have occured. I agree with you. I would never use hand-me-down underwear. Go buy your hubby some underwear from Goodwill and see if he wants to wear it. "I washed them for you, honey!"

If it's a matter of economics, as in, you can't afford new underwear, then by all means just wash them in hot water and add bleach to the wash. They'll be fine.

Personally, I love preloved clothing for my kids. We buy some things new and some things preloved. Underwear is where I draw the line. Everyone deserves underwear that is for them alone, worn by them alone.

You could always use the underwear as dustcloths. They work great for that.

As long as they aren't visibly worn & then I just wash in hot water with a little color safe clorox. Course I do this with new undies as well.

I don't do hand me down undies, even between my own children. I just feel like there are some things you should get new if you can! However, when my child has had an accident or is at a friends without undies, it doesn't gross me out that she uses her friends clean undies, but if I have a choice, it's new undies for all!

At Just Between Friends you can buy all sorts of like new but used, clean underware-boy or girl. My daughter was thrilled to get 12 pair panties for her daughter, age 3. Just wash them with your laundry and go for it!

Yuk, I would never give out used undies nor take them. Toss them in the garbage. New ones are cheap.

Dear M. Q:
I would base my decision on the quality of the underwear. If it looks well used and definitely if there are any stains, into the garbage. If the underwear looks practically brand-new, I'd wash it in warmer water the first time and use it.

I never really thought about it before. I got some clothes from a friend for my son, it had some underwear and swim trunks. I also received lots of clothes for my daughters from my cousin. There were lots of underwear for the little one, but now that I think about it there were none included for the older one;^) When I was pregnant I wore my hubby's boxers as maternity underwear (lol). I guess I think of it as an age thing, it's ok for little kids to wear cute undies that are still nice, but as we get older we get more modest and the underwear should be just ours. Kind of like we teach little girls to wear swimming suit tops, otherwise they would be happy just wearing bottoms like the boys.

To me underwear is cotton or some other material that can be washed in hot water and, if you use chemicals, bleach and/or oxiclean. To me as long as it wasn't stained (and really even if it were) I would totally use it after washing in a hot cycle. In our society most people make things into too big of a deal. We are a super wasteful society and I think it's sad people are that germaphobic that they would actually throw away a good pair of underwear. Yes, if they are torn or stained I can see not using them but if not I think it's really a poor decision on the environment to throw them in the trash. I bought both of my maternity swimsuits used and washed them in hot water. To me it's the same thing.

If they were from someone I know, I would. I only buy Gymboree underwear for my boys, because they last and don't wear out, the band is comfortable, and they dont' fade out. I had the size 18mos/2T from my oldest that my youngest also wore, and my youngest is now wearing the size 4/5's that my oldest wore. My neighbor took the size 2's for her little boy.

So yeah, if I knew the person, and they were high quality like the Gymboree's I buy, and they weren't gross. If it were someone I don't know in your situation, probably not.

I would not wear hand me down underwear myself, therefore would not use them for my child either. We have had a lot of hand me downs, but underwear is where I draw the line. I wonder if your husband would wear another man's underwear :)

I would never put used underwear on my child. You just never know what they've been through. I think it's one thing to have used clothes because i've had some for my girls but underwear is different. It's a sanitary issue and by those underwear being so close to her p****** p****, you don't want to risk it by wearing something some other child has had on. It's much easier to just buy new ones and it could save you a trip to the doctors office later on.

I think there is nothing wrong with used underwear. But if you don't feel comfortable to use them for your daughter, just pass them along if they look clean and in good shape. I usually put the kids' underwear in a separate bag for charity. They do what they want!

That's a guy for you! I guess if you were desparate for undies it would be ok after washing them in hot water with Oxy Clean, etc. but me personally...they'd go in the trash. When my DD outgrows her undies, they go in the trash. I give away everything else but those...and really gross shoes.

As a general rule, underwear are not donate-able. If Goodwill doesn't have a used underwear section in the store, then people shouldn't donate underwear to friends. Throw them out. Everyone deserves to wear new underwear.

I never hand down socks or underwear. I feel that every child deserves to have new underwear and socks at least! It is such an intimate thing when you think about it and when my child receives these items handed down they go in the trash.
