Hand Lotion Recommendation

I have been washing my hands frequently lately as to try not to pass on any germs or bacteria, and now I have constant dry hands. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good lotion for dry, chapped, hands? Probably one that would not wash off. Thank you.

I have this problem and Triple lanolin (you can get it at Sally Beauty Supply) is the BEST. Not greasy and does the job better than any I have tired. I work in healthcare and have to wash my hands after every patient. It's only $5 for a big bottle.

Hi W.,

I normally use Aveeno lotion. I have really dry skin and this works great. However, I really love Ahava hand cream. You can order it from deadseacosmetics.com It's made in Israel (in the desert) and it is really amazing. I put it on at night and if I get up to wash my hands they still feel soft.

Hope this helps!

Do you have any lansinoh? That's right the breastfeeding nipple creme? It is the BEST lubricant for chapped skin. I even use it for chapped lips. It is easily absorbed and not greasy.

Kiehl's brand Ultimate Hand Salve worked really well on me. It is thick and creamy but doesn't feel too greasy. It made my hands feel nice when it was so dry out. I've always bought it directly from a Kiehl's store or from Nordstrom.

If you want something easy to find in a drugstore/Target, I like Curel.

I have the same problem and Aquaphor or Cetaphil are the only things that have worked for me. You can also put a bit on Neosporin cream on the cracks at night.

There is a great lotion that I get from walmart. I forget the name of it but it comes in a small jar with a black lid, lemon scented and has a very old-fashioned looking label. NOTHING works better and it will even cut the smells of garlic and onion when you've been cooking with them :)

Oh man, do I feel for you!

I have eczema on my hands and small places on my face and psoriasis on my scalp. During the cooler dry months, the weather wreaks havoc on my skin. It gets cracked, chapped, and tender.

I LOVE Eucerin lotion/cream and Aquaphor. I espeially like Eucerin because it doesn't sting my skin like other lotions do. (I think they have alcohol in them). Aquaphor is an emollient, kind of looks like Vaseline, but feels nice on my dry hands.

Definitely hydrate after you wash. Washing is so drying, especially with all the antibacterial soaps out there. The alcohol in them totally strip your skin of moisture. Also, lotion and gloves at night work wonders in my hands as well. (I do lotion and socks for my feet too). Specialty stores, like Bath & Body Works and Bed Bath & Beyond have socks and gloves tailored to help moisturize with lotions. If you can, use rubber gloves while washing dishes and cleaning (the stove, the counters, etc). That can help too.

Hope this helps!

My dermatologist recommends 'Gloves in a Bottle'. On the package it says that it stays on until your skin cells slough off. Kind of scary but it works for when you need that extra moisture, especially when its dry outside AND you have to wash your hands frequently. I usually have the pharmacist order it for me (from target.) Or you can locate a local store via their site glovesinabottle.com. Good luck!

An old fashoined household remidy is right in your kitchen cabinat(sp?) Olive oil. I prefer the "light" version. It's not as thick and doen't have the smell. I have problems, especially in the summer with cracked feet. I use it and put socks on for a few minutes and in a few days they are nice and supple again. Olive oil has also been recomended on the tv program "Doctors and Dr Oz"

Good luck.

2 quick things:

1 if it "doesn't come off" you don't want it any where near your skin...it means it has unnnatural garbage in it to ensure it "stays on"

2. You want something that penetrates the skin, not just coats it.

I use this:http://liveitdontdiet.isagenix.com/us/en/uh_handbodycream.... For babies too!

I found Suave-vitamin E to work for me. My knuckles were cracked, but this helped.
Put a bottle of lotion by every sink and use after washing. When you wash, use only the soft side of the towel and blot (do not rub) dry. then put on the lotion and leave it on thick on the knuckles and cracked areas to soak in on its own.

stay away from greasy lotions like Keri.

W.,
Sounds crazy, but if you use a few drops of Olive Oil it is MAGIC! Especially when you are doing kitchen prep or other tasks when you wash frequently. It's cheap, probably on hand (no pun intended :), and natural. I also keep a large bottle of Johnson's & Johnson's (you know, the pink bottle we all bought for our precious lil babies) by all the sinks in the house and dab on a bit after each washing. The tip about not rubbing is perfect advise. Any hand or body buffing salt or sugar scrub is also a good way to slough off all the dead skin. Or make your own with olive oil, sea salt (or sugar for a better smell), and a few drops of honey. Works perfectly with what you likely already have in the kitchen and saves the trip to the store. Then use a lotion to seal the moisture in.
Good luck!

The first thing I'm going to suggest to you is to switch from an antibacterial soap to a non-one. I use milk & honey by softsoap which is generic at Target & Walmart as well. It has been scientifically proven that regular ol' soap and water is all you need to clean off the germs and bacteria. I always know when I've used too much, we're out and that's all I have access to, as my hands become extremely dry and chapped and red (mine is into allergic reaction territory). I wash my hands tons because I have a 5 mo old, 5 yr old and 8 yr old and I don't want any illness if I can avoid it right now.
I use several things depending on the severity. My favorites are...
Corn Huskers lotion made by Pfzier apparently but I can't find a web link but you can find it at any drug store

Lansinoh lanolin breast cream http://www.lansinoh.com/

I used to get really painful chapped dry hands. I tried just about every hand cream and even some diaper creams and couldn't find a hand cream that worked. On the recommendation of a friend I started using Melaleuca's dish detergent, hand soap and Renew lotion and the combination has fixed the problem.
If your problem is as severe as mine was then Melaleuca would be worth looking into. To buy the products you do need to have membership with Melaleuca but the memberships are only a $1 so it is really affordable. Feel free to send me a message if you want more information.

Hi W.! I absolutely DO NOT recommend Melaleuca! Two poster gave inaccurate information about the company. They are NOT "green" and the Renew lotion contains petrolatum which is considered toxic and is absorbed into the skin. Anything containing petrolatum will not help in the long run.

I agree with the suggestions for olive oil and the Burt's Bees products! They are great!

Hi W.,
I too was plagued with dry chapped skin and eczema for my entire life but no more once I found Renew Lotion, 7X move effective then Eucerin, through Melaleuca 8 years ago. But I learned something else, the cleaners you use in your home, like dishwasher and dish soap, toilet bowl cleaner, glass cleaner, and the like, including laundry detergent, softener, brighteners, spot-removers, all contribute to your skin condition. In 1985, Melaleuca went green when green was just a color. There is formaldehyde and toxins in all store brand cleaners, detergents, even in your shampoos, conditioners, soaps, even make-up. They use industry euphemism such as Quaternium 15, but its still formaldehyde. This is even in Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo. We make non-toxic but extremely effective alternatives that will save you money but still reduce your environmental footprint. We even make a 99.99% natural disinfectant that kills germs and viruses like E-Coli, H1N1, Staph, etc. You don't even need to rinse this spray away. Everything comes with a 60-day-empty-bottle-guarantee. They make a great non-toxic hand sanitizer that comes in a gel or a individual wipe.

Like Costco, Melaleuca has a membership fee but its only $29 and the annual renewal fee is just $12. Right now until 11-23-09 save $28 and pay just $1 Preferred Customer Fee. PC's get a 30% to 40% discount. Also starting in your 2nd month through your 6th month, receive $20 in free products once you place your monthly 35 point minimum order. That's $100 in free products. Join, take advantage of all the freebies and then decide if you'll stay on or quit. Remember, you're just switching stores so there is no new money being spent here. I'm giving you a generic website so you can click around and see for yourself what Melaleuca is all about. Then call me with your questions. ###-###-####

I adore Aveeno for this. Sometimes my hands can get so dry and chapped it feels like the skin will split, and it soothes immediately and lasts pretty well.

I like this particular one: Aveeno Active Naturals Stress Relief Moisturizing Lotion (mmmm... lavender!).

I use Burt's Bees Shea Butter Hand Repair Creme, can be found at Target or drug stores. It does have a strong (lavender/minty) scent, that I personally like, but some people might not. Anyway, I recommend it because I tend to get eczema outbreaks on my hands and of all the lotions I've used over the years, this is the only hand lotion that actually controls it!

Most lotions, including ones listed here, contain petroleum, and that is the last thing to use on our bodies as it coats the skin, doing nothing for the dryness after it rubs off, and blocking the skin from doing its job of excreting toxins.

I had lots of allergies and my daugther had severe eczema and we started using Sensaria Natural Bodycare products and loved them! No petroleum, no waxes or mineral oil, no sythetic perfumes, no dyes, and the list goes on. I have been a representative for the company now for over seven years and my main customer base is families of autism and nurses. Guess why. They wash their hands all of the time and deal with dryness and they have multiple allergies and can use so very little things on the market. The products can and should be used by the whole family, especially your baby:o)

I offer a first time discount and there is a one-year guarantee on everything. I am listed here in the Local Business Reviews or you can visit my website ww.sensaria.com/J.

Sounds like all of us have the same problem. I use Renew lotion by Melaleuca. It has worked wonders. And it has been tested against Eucerin products and Renew is 7x more affective. Also it does not contain any harmful chemicals. Some lotios have chemicals that actually make your hands dryer and then you have to use more lotion. Good Luck
