So my handsome little guy (18 months) was diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth this morning. I know that there is nothing to make it go away faster, but do you guys have any tips to help make his symptoms more bearable? We tried an oatmeal bath tonight, it seemed to help but not for very long. Probably an hour later was itching away. Any tips to help my little one?

He hasn't developed any sores in his mouth, he has a couple around his lips but they've stayed mostly on his hands and feet. My doctor is very holistic and believes you should just tough it out. We are trying to find a new one. Her approach just doesn't work anymore.

What can I do next?

The sores in the mouth are the WORST my son would drool rather than swallow. Then they broke open and so he would drool bloody saliva, and cry.

They told me I could coat his mouth in milk of magnesia. Didn't seem to help.

What did work for him was using one of those mesh bags attached to a ring (I don't know if they make them anymore but it was for kids to try table foods without choking). I went to Sonic and bought a bag of small crunchy ice they sell and would fill the mesh bag with ice and let him suck on it. I would also place him in his high chair with the bag of ice and a bowl of ice filled water and he would dip the bag in the bowl and suck on it.

The cold really seemed to help his mouth and he didn't get dehydrated.

Good luck I think that was the longest week of my life!!

I'm surprised your ped didn't tell you anything. I believe ours said to use a cotton swab to dab 1:1 mix of benedryl and maalox directly onto the sores.

Poor little guy! He may end up with sores in his mouth, so be on the lookout for that. Calomine lotion helps with itching - dab it on with a cottonball.

When our son got it he got a very mild case.
Other than a few blisters on the plams of his hands and soles of his feet he never even had a temp and he wasn't itchy at all.
When he got it - I got it too since I'd never had it before - and I never got itchy or had a fever either.
But I do know some kids really suffer with this one.

Look into Elderberry syrup and colloidal silver. I'm sorry the baby is going through this.

There isn't too much you can do but I would call the Ped and ask. A pharmacist is a good option to call as well.

Also, now I'm saying this nicely, if you don't like the advice you get from the holistic Ped, you might want to give someone else a try as he might not meet your needs. Personally, I like suggestions and advice beyond saying tough it out. So I see a regular old doctor.

Hope your little man feels better.

I hope you find something to help sooth your tough little buddy! I don't remember any great help and our ped told us we could give some ibuprofen to ease discomfort but I want to share something with you so you're not alarmed if it happens.

My son came home in preschool with this and his little sister developed it shortly after. Once healed, we moved on only to have their little finger and toe nails start popping off. They were a clean separation and came off whole with no pain but it freaked me out. Apparently the little blisters can occur under their finger nails. They separates the skin from the nail and when it grows out, it just comes off. It's not as common in bigger kids but those tiny nail beds just don't have enough to hang onto. It was not painful but when your kid looses six nails, you are concerned. A quick trip to the ped answered those questions but I've always wondered why they don't warn you that it can happen so I tell anyone whose kid gets HFM.

Good luck!

PS The nails grew back just fine!
