We are having a halloween party for our older kids ages 4,7 and 10. I work weekends but I happen to have halloween weekend off. So, my question is, do I have our party on Fri the 30th in the evening OR on Sat the 31st in late afternoon prior to trick or treating?

What can I do next?

I think that it would be great fun to have it on Halloween! You could have it in the late afternoon and when its time to go out Trick or treating you could go as a large group. When everyone is done they can all have some hot apple cider and get ready to head home: ) Have a great time!!

I'd say feel out some of the parents of the kids' that are going to be invited, maybe they have a party they are invited to and are wondering what to do with their children. If you can't do that, then I would suggest a late afternoon party and then do group trick or treating in your neighborhood until 7 or so and then send the kids home. But obviously, leave it up to the parents if they need to pick the kids up before tt'ing. Sounds like a blast!

If you have the party prior to trick or treating on Saturday, You can have the kids come in costume (only once for the other moms to dress them). You can have activities to get them ready for going out like decorating treat bags and games to reinforce safety rules. Favors can be glow stsicks which can be used while trick or treating for added safety. Just my thoughts as a grandmother. Liz

I think Saturday before trick or treating would be good. You may have to feed them though, or they'll all splurge on candy all night. Something simple like hot dogs on the grill would work. Or do up some fun ghoulish food.

I am a pretty big fan of halloween and every year invite our parents and siblings over for chili, hot cider etc. Then, the grandparents man the door and the siblings take kids trick or treating. So my response is purely personal :)

1.) The kids may have had a halloween/fall celebration at school on Friday and parents have to work. May be just too much to expect the kids and parents to rush to another event.
2.) Maybe an afternoon party on Saturday would work. And then kids that have other plans for the evening can still attend.

Our neighborhood is hopping on Halloween night.....the streets are crowded with kids, so I would disagree that outdoor trick or treating is "out." I would do the party in the late afternoon, maybe serve some pizza for dinner and then the kids can go out trick or treating. The parents will love it because they will not have to worry about making dinner!

I had a Halloween "open house" last year on Halloween evening before trick-or-treating for my daughter's friends and their parents. I think it was about 3 hours long (maybe 4 - 7 pm) and people could come and go when ever they wanted. I had a bunch of food set out buffet style (chili, trays of baked pasta, spinach-artichoke dip, etc. -- all things I could make ahead of time). It really worked out great and the parents appreciated not having to get dinner ready before heading out for trick-or-treating. Have fun!

Alot of people don't take their kids trick or treating anymore. The new in thing is to go to a party.

My daughter went trick or treating last year and we stumbled upon a neighborhood church having a party and she didn't want to leave the party she would much rather do that then walk around the neighborhood. She's 8 by the way. And the year before that I took her out and I swear it was a ghost town noone anywhere.

I would go for Saturday late afternoon, if your not planning on feeding the kids I would do it eary enough so the kids have plenty of time to go home to eat before heading out. If you are planning on feeding them you can do all kinds of easy foods that are halloween themed.. if you want any ideas let me know! We do a halloween party for the neighbor kids every year and have done some fun, kid friendly foods that isn't all junk food.

Have fun!!
