If your son is old enough to care, it should be however long he wants it to be and is able to take care of in a reasonable time. This is one place where my ex and I disagree -- I feel that the way one wears one's hair is a rather harmless form of personal expression, and that children should be able to express their individuality that way if they want to. After all, there are far worse ways of doing that than having your hair be long, or a mohawk, or very very short, or spiked, or purple, or whatever.

However short your boy wants it - if he is old enough to say. If not, however short you want it to be :) Both of my boys have had long hair at times, depends on their mood I guess.

whatever you and your family are comfortable with, there's no set length. We have one boy in our family who like it cut real short and another with shoulder length shag. Unless there's some sort of school rule, there's no real requirements.

I always kept my son's hair short. That's one thing that my ex-husband and I have actually always agreed on. We always got compliments on what a little gentleman our son was because his hair was always kept short and nice.
He did go through a phase a couple of years ago where a lot of the boys were letting their hair grow longer and even though my son has beautiful blonde hair, he couldn't take it for long. It was too much trouble. The shorter it is, the easier it is. He found that out for himself.
He is 15 now and lots of the boys want the "Justin Bieber" longer hair all swept to one side or the "skater" look. Some of these boys spend more time on their hair than their homework.
My friend let her son's hair grow out like the other boys, but he doesn't like taking showers and he doesn't like combing it and it was hanging in his eyes so he was having trouble finding silverware in the drawer to help set the table and she took him for a hair cut. He threw a fit, but now there's nothing to argue about combing or getting out of his face and he's actually fine with it.
It's a personal choice to be sure.
I personally think boys look nicer with short hair and it's easier to deal with.
Just my opinion.

Since my son turned 3, both he and my husband have brush cuts. 1/4 inch long in the winter, and 1/8 inch long in the summer. Buzz it down again every time it starts getting shaggy (about a month or so). It washes up so easy. Takes no time to dry. He never has trouble seeing through hair hanging over his eyes. And I have to laugh every time a lice outbreak happens at school because he hardly has any hair to worry about. Many boys in his school have brush cuts, so he fits right in.

It's your choice , if you like the longer look and it does not bother your son then let him have it longer , I have seen lot's of boys with long scruffy surfer dude type hair and it looks so cute , my son however has strange hair that grows outwards instead of downwards so we have to keep his hair pretty short.

Depends on the age of the boy, his hair type and your (and his) taste. One of my boys has stick-straight, cow-licked hair so we have to stick with a "boys regular" or shorter or he looks funny. My oldest went through a phase at around ages 8-10 when his hair was chin length (and times almost shoulder length) and it looked great because he has nice waves. Longer hair also looks good on boys with very tight curls, who can often only go very short or very long. A "boys regular" cut never goes out of style, but longer or shorter styles can look great too.

Medium length. Should not be a crew cut, as the hair is there to provide some protection from sun radiation and from knocks and scrapes. But also short enough to help prevent overheating. They overheat very easily. Also it is easier and quicker to wash. Most toddlers hate having their hair washed.
