Hair Stylists and How Much to Tip

Hello moms,

I've been going to the same hair stylist for many years. I am very happy with her and always have been. I was just wondering what other people tip their hair stylist. I've always thought I was generous with my tips, but now I'm afraid I might not be tipping enough. Should I be tipping 18%, like I do in restaurants? Any opinions would help.

What can I do next?

I think that you're tipping just fine. i usually tip about that amount too. My sister works in a hair salon and she says 15% is good. Some people don't tip at all and that's after a hair color or perm. She's even cut several people at once from the same family adn only gotten a dollar. But ata place like Supercuts where it's only about 15 for a haircut I usually give 2 or 3 dollars.
I think if you weren't tipping good the stylist you use would become "unavailable" when you called for an appoinment. You can always give her something extra during the holidays if it's someone that you use all the time.

I generally tip like I would in a restaurant: 15-20%. I've seen tip charts that list "rates" for all sorts of services from taxi drivers to hair stylists to baggage carriers, but a standard percent is easier for me to remember. :-)
Best,

Hi
I have actually been going to Micheal's school of hair design where the students cut your hair with teacher supervision and evaluation. They charge $10 for a hair cut and the last two times I have gone the that girls that cut my hair were very good. They were in their first few months and you wouldn't really even know it. The only thing is they took a lot more time than at a reg. salon but the cut and styling was just as good. I give them a $5 tip because they did a good a job and it makes them feel good to know that you are willing to tip them 50%, what's another $5 as compared to a $40 hair cut?

I always do 20% whether it is a restuarant or a hair stylist.
