I recently bought a straight iron to straighten my hair. Someone told me I'm supposed to use a hair protectant product before using the iron, so I don't burn or damage my hair. I've never heard of this but admit I'm new to this. Please let me know if you use a product and which ones work best.

I use garnier fructis leave in conditioning cream. I also color my hair, and use my straight iron every day. My hair looks smooth and shiny, no damage
You should always use a protectant when using a flat iron... whether you notice any damage or not! I highly recommend Aveda Damage Control. It is a spray and you work it into your hair starting at the roots. For the ladies smelling their hair burn... you are damaging your hair and ultimately will see the results over time. Aveda products can be found at many salons. Check around your local area.
any product with silicon is great - and keeps you hair flat for a long time without the frizzies. I use John freeda straight out shampoo and conditioner, then I use the hair serum THERMAL, same JF brand, just a dab in your palm, and on damp hair really makes a difference. I blow dry first, the flat iron. if you are just going to flat iron, use the thermal serum on dry hair.
I like the shampoo/conditioner duo because my hair is really thick, and very curly/frizzy. these tame it.
When I use my flat-iron, I don't use any type of protectant beforehand. However, I don't use it every day either. I dunno...isn't a good conditioner enough?

I'm an 18 year salon professional as well as a daily flat-iron user...I like CHI thermal products or hair toys, which is a bit thinner, depending on your hair's texture. And yes, you should always use a protectant and make sure your hair is dried thoroughly too.

sometimes i spray my hair sometimes i don't, i use something called heat wave (i think) anyways it smells good so i don' t have the burnt hair smell, and after it is straight i sometimes spray a little in and it keeps the static away too.
Hi M., welcome to the millenium, I wish they had straight iron's when I was in high school. 20 yr cos pro Bead Head has a product called Girl Toys, just a drop in your palm, rub hands together, and apply to mid shaft, and ends, hair may steam in the iron, this is normal, most ceramic iron's heat up to 450, if you do not see steam, your probally burning your hair. For years I cut this little boy with Autism, he would put the cape over his head, and say, all by myself, when the parents tryed to help me, I had them go to the frount of the salon to wait, and he let me cut his hair, all by himself, he was so cute.
I use a heat protectant when I straighten. It only makes sense, you're using a 375 degree iron on your hair if you use nothing it's bound to get damaged. I use Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray. It's about $4 at Walgreens and it makes my hair smell nice. It doesn't feel like I've got tons of product in my hair either.
I use a straight iron and yes you should use a hair gel of some type on your hair before using the flat iron.
One that is good is Rewind. Little pricier than some brands but it lasts quite a long time.
I use a straight iron and don't use any product before I use it. My hair isn't fried or damaged that I've noticed or that my hairstylist has said anything about.
I use a heat protectant before I straighten. I was told the same thing as you. I have hair that is very easily damaged so I took the better safe than sorry approach. You could also ask your hair stylist what she thinks. You can find many products in the stores specifically for straightening hair or just meant as a heat protector for all types of heat styling.
