So What Happened?

i had some blood work done and nothing came up. my doc said that at my age (almost 34) that i should be taking a calcium with vit D supplement.. so i started that... and my multi-vitamin (i still take prenatals). i stopped taking a couple of my meds that weren't working any longer for arthritis. my hair is growing in thicker and healthier, my nails aren't peeling like they were.. i've always had fake nails because my nails are so fragile. apparently i was lacking calcium and vit D. so that's my update. now if only i can get rid of the adult acne issue! LOL take care everyone and thanks for all the advice!

You may be allergic to sulfites which are found in wine, non-organic dried fruits, and cheese that is not raw. Also, too much chlorine in your water can cause hair loss, get yourself a water filter for the shower, tub, and kitchen sink.

Hi A.. My name is E. and YES I have had a lot of hair loss since I had my son. Also. .. my sister who has 5 kids has had tons of hair loss with each child. Fortunately for us, our mother is cosmetologist and has been able to help us find ways get that hair back on our heads. What she had us do is use a special shampoo and conditioner called NIOXIN by Paul Mitchell (any of the even number series) that is designed to help produce stronger, healthier, and thicker hair, and more of it. She suggested as well that we continue to use our prenatal vitamins even after we have stopped breast feeding and especially during. The end result is that we both have healthier hair, and it is much fuller. Just something you might want to try.

Hi,

I lose hair when stressed - but the real reason is stress eats up vitamins especially BVITAMINS - recently I had a similair problem - started getting b's from brewers yeast & it has stopped ( the stress has not. . .) Are you pulling your hair up real tight alot ?

Get the book 'Nourishing Traditions' by Sally Fallon. Buy some high quality ORGANIC chicken livers - cook with onions -eat with salt and lemon.Eat lots of Kale and other leafy greens, take your vitamins.

If you can afford it go find and accupunturist and/or a natropath.
Hope these quick suggestions help.

The same thing happened to me after my third. I freaked out. All the doctors said it was normal. Our hormones control our hair growth patterns. If I look at the other women in my family I can see it. Mine did come back somewhat after about a year. My hair also got a lot curlier. I found out that taking Vitamin K helps. And I tried the Arbonne scalp treatment and that helped too. Good Luck. I know how much it bothered me too. -G.

Run a vitamin and mineral panel. You're probably depleted in some essential minerals.

I would seriously have your thyroid checked, but first, inform yourself as much as possible. Many doctors are ignorant about how to detect thyroid irregularities. http://www.thyroidpower.com/
Here is a wonderful article by a wonderful practitioner. She specializes in women's health, and if you can possibly see her, even once, DO! She has helped me a lot. She's in the South Bay, but I used to commute from the North Bay to see her, and it was well worth it.

Hi A.:

I suffered hair loss after my children. Not only that, but any time I had a surgical procedure. I went to a Dermatologist and she told me that as long as you see new hair growing in (even though it's stuble), then don't worry about it. It should grow back just fine. Mine was falling out by the handfuls. I think it stopped about 6 months after the birth. It has something to do with the trauma your body goes through. If it continues, you can always call your doctor.
The other thing I did was cut my hair in to a shorter, layered look. It gave my hair a more "volume" look. It didn't look so thin.

Good Luck

When I work with women experiencing hair loss, I use this check list to help identify underlying cause. You may find something here that speaks to you. Several items may serve to help your doctor explore underlying cause too.

CHECK LIST FOR UNDERLYING ISSUES CONTRIBUTING TO HAIR LOSS

- Protein deficiency (<15% of calories, low L-cysteine and L-methionine)
- Essential fatty acid deficiency (in particular, DHA and GLA)
- Vitamin deficiencies (B3, B5, B6, biotin, inositol, C, D, and E)
- Mineral imbalances (zinc/copper ratio low, high selenium)
- Heavy metal and/or fluoride toxicity (mercury, arsenic, aluminum)
- Hypochlorhydria (lack of adequate stomach acid)
- Hypothyroidism (basal body temperature significantly/ regularly < 97.8 ∞F)
- Stress (hypoglycemia, food allergies)
- Hormone imbalances (stress, life changes)
- High sugar diet (affects bladder meridian)
- High soy diet (high estrogens, high copper, low zinc, low methionine)
- Shampoos, hair dyes and treatments (check your products at www.ewg.org)
- Autoimmune diseases (celiac, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, lupus)
- Fungal or bacterial infections, demodex, ringworm
- Medications (such as BP, allupurinol, birth control pills, anti-coagulants)
- Poor circulation, acute illness, radiation exposure, diabetes

Symptomology Questionnaire for Copper Overload (Gittleman)
- Frequent light meals but no energy
- Mind races, even when body exhausted
- Creative but anxious and drained of energy
- Daydream and live in your head
- Insomnia due to mind not calming down
- Prone to emotional and physical highs and lows
- Frequent colds, flus, slow wound healing, lack of taste, appetite, white spots on nails
- Migraines, hyperactivity, panic attacks, mood swings, depression, PMS, skin problem- for which no underlying cause has been found
- High estrogen levels via BCP, ERT/HRT or copper IUD
- Crave high copper foods like chocolate, nuts, avocados, soy
- Hair has natural orange-red tint or copper highlights
- Dark areas of pigmentation or skin blotches on face

With 3-5, probably some degree of copper overload
With 6-8, very likely copper overload
With 9-12, almost certainly have a strong or long-standing copper overload

Yes! I had the same problem. My kids are now 12 and 14, but I noticed it not long after I had each of them and it slightly worsened with time. I tried Nioxin products, multi-vitamins, iron (which made me constipated) and even the hair tonics for regrowth. They did tests on my thyroid but it was normal.
Finally I have results after taking Biotin. I find it at GNC and I take one caplet in the morning at 2500 mcg per day. I used to get comments all the time from my hair dresser, and I was stuck with certain hair styles to hide the thinner spots, but now you would never know! Stick with it if you try it. You won't see the results for a few weeks. Give your hair a chance to kick in and within 3 months you'll notice a HUGE improvement. There are no side effects that I can tell, either, and none I have read about.
If all your other tests come back normal, I hope this works for you like it did for me. I was certain I'd be one of those bald old ladies with a scarf around my head!

Yes, I have this problem, too. Are you Asian? I am half Korean and it seems to be more common in Asian women, I'm finding out. It also runs in my family to have thin hair and even some, sort of, balding spots. I hate it! It's awful! It's not as bad as I've seen in tv before, but if the light hits me just right, you can see my scalp where my bangs are. When I first noticed it, I didn't have bangs. And cutting my hair to have bangs actually helps cover it up. But now I'm growing them out again to see if it still looks as bad as I thought and it seems to be a little better. I'm sure it doesn't look as bad to others as it looks to you. I tried Nioxin stuff, (shampoo, conditioner and scalp treatment) it made my hair that I have really healthy but it didn't generate any new hair growth. I don't know what else to tell you. I know there are other hair loss things you can try, but I haven't tried them.
I also had a number of blood tests done at first. There wasn't anything wrong, though. Hang in there. You're not alone.

Make sure they check your thyroid function. I have hypothyroidism (pregnancy induced) and it can cause hair loss. I take a pill daily now to regulate my thyroid. This is a very commonly missed diagnosis.

Hi Antoinette! I know how you feel. I've experienced considerable hair loss after each and every one of my births. I tried taking 'hair and nail' supplements, massaging my scalp, and using a more sensitive shampoo, but nothing really helped. I spoke with a professional hairdresser as well who said that sometimes it comes back. I guess I'm lucky. My hair was really thick before having children and now it's thin. My sister, though, lost her hair in the front as you described. Keep taking a multi-vitamin and look at your health food store for some natural remedies as well as for special 'hair and nail' supplements. Good luck!

I always lose my hair after having my babies. Both times I lost so much the sides of my head were actually bald. I lost most of it around the perimeter of my hair line. It woould just come out in clumps in my hand in the shower and every time I'd brush it. It grows back but it is pretty heartbreaking. I have noticed lately that mine is also getting thinner in the front. This does not make me happy

Hi-
Since having my first baby 6 months ago, I have noticed my hair is thinning, and am finding it in the shower, sink - everywhere! I researched this, and found it is quite common due to hormonal surges that take place.

Thanks so much for writing about this. I have some hair thinning in the front as well. My doctor called it male patterned baldness! Just what you want to hear, right? I have hypo-thyroid and PCOS, each of which have a symptom of hair loss. It didn't really occur though until after I had my son. I became an Arbonne consultant specifically to save on their hair treatment. It feels similar to the stuff that you find in Nioxin but more concentrated. I saw a big improvement...its not back to normal though. The strange thing about it for me was that it didn't seem to fall out in bunches...just slowly but surely wasn't growing back in. I hope that you write what the doc's say! I'm pregnant now with number 2 so I'm a little worried about what is to come!

I had this same problem, except that I have thick hair. But I was loosing "chunks" at a time. I finally went to my primary care physician who had my Thyroid check and sure enough it was my thyroid. I am now on medications for this and I have notice a slight improvement. Hope it helps knowing that you aren't the only one! :)

I have heard of it before. And my hair is surely thinner than it was.

My Chinese Medicine doctor told me to eat goji berries every day. No idea whether that works for everyone, but apparently it is a traditional remedy for hair thinning in women.

My hair keeps getting thicker, but maybe it would have, anyway.

Yes, with my daughter (now 3) I lost A LOT of hair while I was pegnant. My eyebrows fell out from the middle to the otter edges and my hairline really receeded as well. It was pretty scary! I used Nioxin and after breastfeeding ended, my hair began coming back. I have a 1 month old son and have had no problems what so ever. (knock on wood!) I didn't have any testing done and was told it was"hormonal". Your case may be worse than mine though. Good - luck!

Hi A.

I have not suffered hair loss but I do have very fine hair too! Your hair loss could be due to lack of the right nutrients! Have you heard of Nutrilite Comlex for Hair, Skin and Nails? The main ingredient is the vitamin Biotin which is a water soluble B vitamin. I take this and my hair is definitely fuller. Even my 82 year old mother noticed my hair was thicker and said she wanted some! You can purchase this product, or as part of a women's supplement pack which contains a Daily Multi, Cal Mag D , Complex for Hair Skin and Nails and Ocean Essentials Balanced Health (Omega 3 from cold water small fish). Again, I don't know if lacking the right nutrients is the cause of your hair loss but it is worth discussing it with your doctor. - M.

My sister ran into the same problem with hair loss after her children. She still doesnt know what its from but its possible that its lupus related. Thats a common symptom, hair loss.

Before I was pregnant I was on some kind of a soybean diet. I ate soybeans all the time just cause. They gave me little gas but it was worth it not to get pregancy mask or to start balding. I'm sure the folic acid and other vitamins found in soybeans helped me to avoid all those typical symptoms of pregancy.

If you dont find any results from your doctors and such I would try Eastern medicine or my make-up tattoo provider offers scalp tattoos to help hide the effects of thinning hair. Good luck

I have not had this problem personally, but I understand the cream that I use because I am past menopause is great for thinning hair. Contact Syringa about their Resolve cream which is used for osteoporsis and a million other things for women. It is a wild yam product that converts to progesterone if you need it and after you absorb what you need the rest is just a good moisturizer. The phone number to ask questions and have them send information is ###-###-#### in Idaho Falls, Idaho. They probably also have a web site. I have used this for years and I am so healthy and ready to turn 70 this month.

That was scary for me, too. I especially lost hair after my third child! Have you ever tried talking to a nutritionist regarding foods that may encourage health hair growth? I noticed a change in me when I chose to start eating more wholegrains and fresh foods. I've also been watching a show on BBC (channel 135 on Dish) that is called "You Are What You Eat" - it comes on about noon or 1 - just the other day someone on there had thin hair and Gillian, the host and nutritionist, made the suggestion that it was her diet that was the cause.

Also, if you are interested in hair growth, scalp stimulating products, I know of one that is botanically based.
