Hey guys, I am experiencing a significant amount of hair loss!?! I am 28 yrs old, just had a baby 4 months ago, still on pre natal vitamins due to breast feeding...I have very long very thick hair, so family tells me not to worry since I have so much hair. However, to me it is alarming since I never remember losing hair like this! I did just color it a few months ago from blond to my natural color of brown. Not sure if the coloring is causing that or something else. I plan to ask my doctor but wonder if any of you had a similar experience after having a baby and if that is common after giving birth? Every time i shower/comb my hair i pull CLUMPS out! SOS!
Thank you!
M.

I have that same problem. My hair falls out all the time. I especially have noticed it getting worse after I gave birth. People tell me that it is normal as long as I am not seeing bald spots on my head. When I shampoo or brush my hair there is tons of hair in the tub and in my brush. I think I notice it more because when I am pregnant it doesn't fall out as much because of the hormones and then all of a sudden it's like 100X worse. I hope this makes you feel better.

With the exception of a thyroid disorder, this is pretty normal after having a baby.
My stylist told me the longer your hair IS, the more you notice it (in the shower drain, sliding down your legs as you shampoo, etc..LOL)
She suggested a few things to minimize the loss:
1. Shampoo every other day (or every three days, if you can)
2. Don't pull your hair back or up tightly with bands, clips, etc.
I experience this for QUITE a while after I had my son. There are several posts on this board in the history that you can check out as well.

I believe it is very normal to lose hair post-baby. I think mine feel out about at about 5 or 6 months. You (supposedly) don't lose any hair while pregnant, and then after 4-6 months after the birth your body is going through recovery phases and hair shedding is a normal process.

good morning ,
I am a mommy and a licensed cosmetologist .
nurse'n moms tend to loose hair in ' clumps' about 4-6 months post preg.
be kind to you [ it is a goofy mommy stresser ] go to a ' locks of love ' hair salon [ free hair cut free]
get 10 inches cut off ...[ get a ruler ; it really is not alot . ]
DONATE your hair to a child , an adult who has no hair ...all issues solved .
if you are healthy ; it is simply post baby , henceforth , if overly tired, not hungry etc ... you may have undiagnosed thyroid, diabetes and or very low iron count ...
your husband will still love your w/ 10 inches off your pony tail !!!!!
good luck .

If no one has told you yet.. take a deep breath and relax because it is (our doctor's favorite word) normal. From 4-6 months after giving birth your hair will thin out. My best advice (so it doesn't show up everywhere) is to shower ever morning and blow dry your hair afterward, you'd be surprised how that reduces it throughout the day. You're still going to lose hair throughout the day but it won't look so dramatic. I think I read that normally women lose around 125 strands a day and post pregnancy women lose 500 for a period of time. Good luck and hang in there!

Normal. I did not know this either, but I consulted my OB. I breastfed until 3 months at about 4 mons. my hair started falling out in handfuls. Particularly alarming to me because I have very thin hair. My doc said do not wash everyday, no hair products and do not curl or blow dry. Which I did. I just ran a pick through my hair and let air dry. Even wearing bands or clips can cause damage. My husband even noticed the handfuls of hair coming out in the shower. Anyway, My OB said it was due to hormones. It lasted about 4 months and did stop.

This happened to me too and it lasted a few months!! I too have long full hair, which is why the loss and the clumps are much more noticeable. It is normal, although it certainly doesn't seem like it when you are in the midst of dealing with strands of hair everywhere. Hang in there; it eventually stops.

Completely normal! My son is 4 1/2 months old and I started losing my hair when he was 3 months. It is incredible the amount of hair I am still loosing. I don't know if you know this or not, but while pregnant you stop losing hair so once the baby is born your body in it's attempt to get back to normal begin shedding hair again. I'm coming up on 2 months of hair loss and I'm still pulling handfuls of hair out...it's especially bad in the shower, but we're finding my hair everywhere. I too have extremely thick hair so it seems like ton, but my hair had become just way too thick due to not losing any of it. I wouldn't worry about it unless you begin to notice bald spots.

Congrats on the baby!!

Ever since I had my son 6 months ago, my hair has been coming out a lot more than usual. How big of clumps are you pulling out? When I'm in the shower I usually have about 10-20 strands coming out (almost everyday). I looked it up online and read an article saying after having a baby you can loose more hair, but after a year your hair will be back to normal. I haven't worried about it since I don't have any bald spots!(Yet!)
