So What Happened?

I so appreciate the support and am going to my lady dr and then a dermatologist, will keep you posted. I have also been taking Biotin and it seems to be creating new growth. Why do men get to shave their heads and be considered sexy and we have to deal with this, all after carrying a baby etc.

Dear M.

When my aunt was losing her hair from stress and an illness I spoke with a Roma woman about it. She told me to make a thick paste of organically grown tobacco and cover her head with it once a week. Put a kerchief over it and let it sit as long as it is wet. It did work. I hope the tobacco does dye you hair. We used oil to keep it from her hair but some did dye it.
Other than that it's Vitamin A and E taken internally. That I know about.
On the medical side you could use Rogaine.

A trip to the doctor.

Hair loss can be caused by many things; radiation, hormones, ringworm, stress, poisons, having a baby, anorexia/dieting, even friction...there's a HUGE long list of easily fixable causes of hair loss, those are just the ones that pop into my head.

Without knowing the cause, a treatment plan is pointless. What if you're treating for genetics...when the problem is ringworm? Or treating for a thyroid problem when the actual problem is that there's not enough protein in your diet?

If you have extreme hair loss, a doc is going to be able to go down that list and start crossing things off.

Good Luck!

Hi M.,
You don't give very much information, but two things come to mind. 1) If you have had a baby in the last 3 months, you may just be shedding the hair that you didn't shed in pregnancy. It's very common, but can be alarming. 2) You may have a severe deficiency of something (fat even). Have you been dieting? Again, it could be changes from pregnancy or postpartum. I think it would be worth visiting a doctor or naturopath to do blood tests. It's only when you know what's causing the problem that you know how to fix it.
Good luck!

I lost about half of the bulk of my hair recently. It was awfully upsetting. It was probably from a medication I'm taking, and my neurologist told me a great remedy, at least to make it STOP happening, and hopefully to reverse it, is Biotin. It's available over the counter, and you don't have to buy an expensive one, either. She said take a high dosage, maybe take it twice a day where they recommend once, even. Excess should come out in your urine. Of course, it is always, always a good idea to check stuff past your own doctor first. Make sure it doesn't conflict with anything you're already taking. But Biotin is just B vitamins. Usually, we (Americans) don't get enough in our own diets. It's good for hair, nails, and our "nerves". Can't beat that!! :)

Good luck!

If you have a large hair lost (especially recently), it is stronly advised to get your thyriod check. You may have an overactive thyriod.

I did, and still do from time to time. Vitamin B complex helps it... it cuts back on your bodies reaction to stress which is usually why your hair is falling out (given no health problems).
I also had mine cut quite a bit shorter than it was (about 6 in off) in an effort to kind of get ahead of it and keep it healthier. I now faithfully have it cut every 6 weeks. I also switch up my shampoo and conditioner to keep from getting so much build up... and I use a conditioner that moisturizes. Nothing fancy, just one that says its for that.

I have had a lot of hair loss in the last 10yrs. I went to the doctor and she did some testing and then sent me to a dermatologist. She told me that I had alopecia. She told me to try Rograine but since I was going to try and have a baby then I should hold off. I never did use the Rograine. I guess it made me a little nervous. Once you start you have to continue for the rest of your life. I should have probably gone to a different dermatologist because she was more interested in finding irregularities in my skin then the hair on top of my head. I cry every day so I know what you are going through. I am curious to find out what happens. Keep us informed and just no that you are not the only one out there.

Have you considered that it's possibly a nutritional deficiency? Try a good multivitamin, or start eliminating negatives out of your diet (I'd suggest starting with sugar.) My mom lost almost all her hair after having 6 kids, and it grew back only after she started eating healthy.

You might look into the prescription drug Spirolactone. To my understanding it can really help hair loss. For myself it has been great in regulating my hormones and has dramatically helped my acne and reducing my symptoms of poly cystic ovarian syndrome. As I undertand it male pattern hair loss is very much related with this hormone issue.

Look into it. I highly recommend it. Good luck.

It usually happens with lack or deficiency of essential vitamins such as vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin C, and iron. Stress also one of the main reasons.
Here you go to know about the remedies to treat and prevent the hair loss:

See a dermatologist, in addition to thyroid, ask to have your iron level checked. Not just the Iron, but the Ferritin Level (long-term stores of iron). Since I got an IUD and bleed more, my iron is always borderline, and when it gets below a certain threshold, I start losing hair. BTW, my female determatologist would like to see my Ferritin level over 50, where the regular doctor says "anything between 20 and 200 is normal". Well, when I'm at a level of 35, I lose hair, a lot!

Good luck!

I don't have any advise for you. I looked at the responses because I've noticed some thinning in my hair. When I see that stress and diet can cause it, that makes sense. The thinning started right about the time stress started creeping in 8 months ago and my diet has been not so great the last couple of months. Thanks to the others for mentioning those as I was considering Rogaine or something similar. I will now work on my diet and increase vitamin B. Stress, well, I will do what I can. :)

Good luck to you M., I hope their advise helps you as well.

I agree. Get a doctor. Don't waste your money on all the miracle hair growth treatments. If you have a health condition causing hair loss, or a hormonal imbalance then you are pretty much at its mercy until you get it under control. Try to hang in there, it probably seems like you are going to loose all your hair but you won't. I have been through this so many times I lost count. I used to spend hours worrying and crying about this, and I spent a ton of money on cures as well, I finally realized its pointless. Try not to stress. Find a doctor. Send me a personal email if you want to chat with someone who can relate.
