Hair Extensions

A friend of mine informed me that her friend (who is a stylist at a very nice salon) could give me hair extensions at a discounted rate. I have fine hair, and on top of that it is also thinning, it never used to be this bad. I'm very tempted to get the extensions done, but have heard some "horror" stories of what extensions can do to your hair. I'm looking for your input on if it's a good or bad idea to get them and why. If you've ever had them, did you regret anything about getting them or really like having them?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Just to update, I have had my thyroid checked, and it checked out fine.

I had really good hair extensions (real hair ones) put in a few years ago and had them for about 6 months. They were threaded in (not glued). If you have thinning hair on top, it is hard to cover where they are placed in at the crown (they are placed all over, but that is the hardest spot to cover with your own hair) so I was always self conscious of that. My hair was a disaster when I had them taken out - broke very easily, thin, and pretty damaged. Also, my scalp never really felt clean when I had them in. It was fun (I had short hair any my extensions went almost to my waist and the hair was wavy), but I wouldn't do it again.

Yikes-I might not if you have fine and thin hair. You may be able to tell they are fake. Also-it might ruin your hair you DO have.

Really, it depends on the technique being done and your hair type ... I would look up your hair type and what technique is right for you before having it done, many people I know have had it done the wrong way and took months for thier hair to recover.

Have you considered human hair clip in extensions? I purchased some in May this year for my wedding last month to give me some extra length. I still have them and wear them often and MY hair is perfect and healthy still. I bought a 14 piece set of 20" long on hairannex.com for $99, $107 with tax/shipping. IMO clip in is the better choice if you are worried about damage to your hair. Once you get the hang of putting them in, its a piece of cake and you can change up your hairdo anytime you want. Less maintenance and damage that way as well.
Hope that helps! :)

My niece has the ones that are layer, yeah i know they all are, but they have I don't know clips on them. She just lifts up her hair every so many centimeters and clips the big long piece around her hair. Her hair looks beautiful.

I've heard with the ones that are sewn in it's pretty much a lifetime commitmend unless you don't mind your hair being short and I'd make sure I have someone very experienced.

I'd do what my niece did if I choose. She wears them most days and I love the way they look!

I would try out clip in extensions first. Wear them all the time, like the ones from the salon would be, and see how you like them. Extensions are very high maintenance, cost lots of $$$, and can in the end damage your hair. I would research it alot!!!!

Kristina M. gave great advice. I would prefer to get to the root of why your hair is thinning in the first place.

Any type of false hair can have negative consequences for your hair if not done correctly so be careful and know some more. Personally I love wigs and would wear one if I found my hair thinning while I was trying to get to the bottom of what was going on with my hair.

I'm having my extension put in next month. My hair is a disaster after pregnancy and breast feeding. The hairdresser sounds like she is very knowledgeable. Before she will put extensions in she put me on hair growth supplement, she took all the bleach out if my hair and she did couple recovery treatments. Now i need to wait a month to give my hair time to grow and recuperate and than she will install the extensions. Mine have little beads to attach them to original hair. I can send you some pic after and give you my feedback on the whole thing. I'm scared out of my mind also because I have no idea what that will do to my hair and how it will feel.....I'm also planning on checking my thyroid. But my hair was always thin so I'm not very concerned about the gland issues.

Avon sells hair clips that my friend who sells it said she has a lady who wears them all the time. They aren't very expensive and she seems to like them. They have them for the top too which I have considered trying because ever since I lost 50 pounds my hair is thinning. Thank God I have thick hair but it is still upsetting cause of course it is on top in the front. Good luck!

Haven't ever heard anything good about extensions. VERY, very high maintenance.
Just my two cents,

I would think that you need to investigate the reason for your hair loss. You might want to look at your thyroid.
