Hi, Moms.
Occasionally my 6 wk old gets a bad tummy and can't sleep at night. I bought some gripe water today but it wasn't approved by the FDA. Have any of you ever used this or have any other gas remedies that have worked for your babies?

What can I do next?

We used it all the time for my son when he was a baby. We found it worked well, and we gave it to him every night before bed.

I tried gripe water with my daughter but it didn't seem to help. We also used gas drops and those didn't seem to help much either. Sorry, I don't know what to tell you. Have you tried a warm bath or helping her exercise her legs by bending them up and down? Sometimes those things will help to release extra gas. Good luck.

Ive used gripe water for all 3 of my girls, not sure if it was "approved" but I buy non alcohol formulas, as before we didnt realize that it had any in it, and when it was pointed out I took a "shot" of it, and wow, it tingles just like booze! it does seem to work, tho I did more soother dipping in it than doses of it, unless they had hiccups... I like the ones with fennel, but no dill, better taste.

We had wonderful luck resolving my dd's tummy issues with infant probiotics. As your dr first, but our dr recommended it. They come in powder or liquid form. We used the powder (Children's Floragen) and just sprinkled a bit in some breast milk. She went from being in pain after eating every time, to having zero tummy issues.

We used gripe water for my daughter for many months, putting it directly into her bottles. We were directed to do this by her GI specialist. She was diagnosed with a protein intolerance that prevented her digestive system from breaking down any soy or dairy proteins. The excess gas was a byproduct of this condition. If your baby cries often (very often referred to as "colic") or if you feel likes something "just isn't right" don't hesitate to ask your pediatrician. You are the best judge of your baby's behavior, trust that instinct. A simple stool test revealed the results for my daughter, in all of about 30 seconds at the doctor's office. Good luck!

Which brand did you buy?
I had heard some brands of gripe water is not ok because it contains 'something' (i really can't remember what that content is , sorry) which shouldn't be given to babies.
I use Baby Bliss ( walgreens has it) which doesn't contain 'that' ingredient. Well I had double checked that 10 months ago when I bought for my son as I was very careful about what I give him. I can't beleive I don't even remember it now! I still give it to him - no issues. It actually settles his stomach immediately.

I think what SK may be referring to is the sodium bicarbonate?

EDIT: Yep, that is it. Check out this site for ingredients to watch out for....

I just gave my 3.5 month old gripe water last night and usually once a week as it her gas issues seem to build up over a span of a week. The first time I gave it to her there was noticeable difference within 20 minutes. I've tried the mylicon drops and it was not as effective. However, with my first that's all I used - go figure. Each baby is different as they say. Anyhow, make sure your gripe water is all natural, meaning - no alcohol, sucrose or petroleum products. Main ingredients should be fennel which is know for helping gas in anyone.

Also, be sure to burp your baby after you give him/her the recommended dosage. I think it's 3 ml, which doesn't seem like a lot but I noticed my LO would swallow air drinking from the dropper as she's only used to drinking breast milk from me or a bottle. I think you can mix it with formula too so you should be burping anyhow. I don't give it to my baby everyday... only when I notice she might be starting to build up gas. Oh and she/he might not like it as you are supposed to refrigerate it after opening =)

I used gripe water and abdominal massage. One thing that made a huge difference was that I cut dairy out of MY diet. It passed through my milk and gave her gas. So if you are breastfeeding, that could be a factor. If not, maybe switch formulas.

We used gripe water and felt like it really helped. I wish I could remember the brand ... we could only find it at Fruitful Yield. It's main ingredients were ginger and fennel. Nature's Harvest rings a bell, but I can't find it on their website. Little Tummys is probably good and easier to find.
Btw, it's good for adults too, for motion sickness, nausea, etc.

I used gripe water and an olive oil belly massage- Olive Oil has a natural relaxant in it and really helps the sore gassy belly muscles to relax. My second boy was really really gassy and my husband used to make jokes about him being marinated in olive oil.

I tried gripe water for gas and it didn't work for my son but it took away his hiccups. I just used gas relief drops and they would work welll. You don't have to buy the Mylicon the store brand is cheaper and works just as well.

Be careful to review the expiration date and contents of the bottle. I bought some when kids were younger, and it had stuff growing at the bottom of the bottle. Just FYI.

As for easing tummy, boil some ginger in water (very lightly) to avoid it being too harsh) and give about a teaspoonful. Most gripe water is made of ginger diluted anyway. Check the labels.

Hi A. first of all you shouldn't be giving your baby any water that hasn't been approved and doctor don't even suggest that you give infant water like they use to years ago. If your baby is gassy at times get advice from the doctor!!! And you don't want to mess around with any home remedies on a baby this young without asking the doctor first!!!!

I never used gripe water but we used the gas drops all the time, especially that young! I thought they helped pretty well. They pass right through so it's safe to give them at every feeding and we bought the generic brand.

I did use the gripe water but I am not sure it did much. She grew out of it. I never really saw a difference if it did help. A friend of mine swore by it.
