I was just wondering what everyone out there knows about green tea. My husband and I recently started drinking it because of all the great health benefits we've heard about it but today I read that if you have high blood pressure that you should not drink it. I thought it would help lower high blood pressure. Also my husband has a thyroid condition. Is it not safe for him to drink it? What about chlidren, is it safe for them?

What can I do next?

I don't know about the medical stuff, but green tea has as much caffeine as black tea, so be careful with the kids or they'll be really, ah, awake! Yikes! I avoid all caffeinated beverages for my kids, they just don't need it.

It helps you lose weight because it increases your metabolism. It is high in caffeine, therefore someone with high blood pressure or heart palpatations shouldn't drink it.

Green Tea has many health benefits. If you take certain medications for high blood pressure or existing thyroid problems, you need to speak with your Pharmacist. Green tea does have a large amount of fluoride and has caffeine, so this can work against some medication.

I do not know about children. I am sure the other moms will know the answer to that.

The answer to this question is...depends on who you talk to. Keep in mind that "green" tea comes from the same plant that black tea does, the processing of it is just different. That means that it is naturally caffeinated (about 47 mg per cup). Caffeine does pose risks to patients with high blood pressure as it increases heart rate and makes the heart work harder. As for consumption by children, I don't let my kids have anything with caffeine. I would say, if you believe the benefits outweigh the risks...everything in moderation is a good standard to live by.

I had major surgery this summer and my doctor wouldn't let me drink any green tea two weeks before my surgery. As far as your husband drinking it, I would hold off until he checks with his doctor. I wouldn't let my kiddos drink it personally. But, I am very conservative and my kiddos only drink water, juice and milk until they are older. Good question though-it will be interesting to see what the other responses were!

There are some suggestions that say green tea may lower chances of heart disease and developing certain types of cancer. The tea has also been useful for weight loss management. Green teas have about a third the caffeine content, by liquid volume, of coffee. Green tea has also been credited with providing a wide variety of health benefits, many of which have not been validated by scientific evidence. There have been many studies and too many to list here but each one found something different from it benefits to it not doing anything. Most found some benefits to green tea. I know from my personal experience that I feel better using it and I have high blood pressure which is controlled with medication. I truly believe green tea has helped lower it as well. To what extent I do not know. Just remember that green tea has been around for over 5000 years and has yet to be the cause of someone's demise. Drink it and enjoy it and if you feel things have changed because of it then I would stop it. The tea has been used as traditional medicine in areas such as China, Japan, India and Thailand and all these people can't be wrong. You will also find that the FDA is not to kind to any type of supplements. They want us all to take prescription drugs I assume. Good Luck.........

Hi I.,

I hope this will help. Green tea contains chemicals called polyphenols, which are among the most powerful antioxidants known. Green teas and herbal teas such as ginger and rosemary offer a pleasant means of antioxidants dose. I say dose for a reason. To much of it is not good because it works like a cleaning system and energy boosting. Even though green tea has less caffeine than coffee, it still packs about 20mg. per cup, enough to trigger insomnia, anxiety, irritability or junpiness in susceptible people. Most experts agree that, for the majority of us, the health benefits of drinking a few cups of green tea a day far outweigh any of the health risks-but you may want to experiment a bit to find the amount thats right for you and your husband. If your looking to for a tea to help lower blood pressure you might want to try chamomile tea its really good with honey and a squeeze of lemon. If your allergic to ragweed, asters or chrysanthemums dont drink chamomile its part of the daisy family. Try earl grey. Just remember when drinking teas esp. with high blood pressure you dont want to increase circulation to the heart. Green tea, ginger, and even ginseng type teas are for energy boosting. Go for the relaxing kind. I hope this helped. Good luck.

I know my mother's cholesterol has dropped a lot since drinking green tea. However, I laid off of it when trying to get pregnant because I had heard it decreases folic acid levels. I'd run it by your doc's office or nurse just to be safe.

Myself and my kids love to drink green tea. We often sit together and drink it hot when times get hurried. I am trying to get my kids away from all the caffeine they tend to drink, especially if it is getting late. I also feel that it has nutritional value, more so than regular tea. FYI, I ran it by my daughter's doc during a conversation we were having regarding her caffeine intake and she said it is better. I personally have high pressure that is well controlled and I am not having any problems. I do not have experience with thyroid problems though.

Hello I., I am not a nutritionist or a DR. but i will tell you what I do know. Green tea has caffiene in it unless you get the de-caf, or caffiene free. (even de-caf has trace amounts of caffiene). Caffiene is not safe or good for your kids! (soda is definitely the enemy!) and the caffiene in tea can raise your husbands blood pressure, (he shouldn't drink soda either). as far as his thyroid, I wouldn't think that any stimulants (caffiene is a stimulant) would be good for the thyroid, as it regulates metabolism, and a strained thyroid needs to be left alone (not stimulated by drugs ) to function properly. I have an adrenal disorder, or a fatigued adrenal (it is responsible, for adrenalin, and energy ) and I am not allowed to have any stimulants, including caffiene, so I drink naturally caffiene free teas, never soda, and I used to be strongly addicted to caffiene ( you didn't want to talk to me before that 2nd cup of coffee in the morning!) Hope this helps! By the way Tylenol (actetaminaphen) has caffiene in it, best to stick to Ibuprophen for pain management when you have it. S.

These are pretty important health-related questions. You may want to consider asking an expert in nutrition (nutrititionalist), herbalist, or perhaps even your physician. You can often get free consultation type information over the phone with questions like the one you've asked for advice from moms about today.

Green Tea

The health benefits of green tea have been studied extensively and been found to contain an antioxicant called catechins, a powerful Polyphenolic compound.

For thyroid problems, (my mom had 5 nodes) try Xanthones,
they have NO side effects and are more helpful than anything out there.
Catechins are 25% higher in concentrations in mangosteen fruit (xanthones) than in the famous green tea.
Research xanthones at www.pubmed.gov The National Library of Medicines.

The February 24th, 2004 issue of TIME Magazine, was all about INFLAMMATION
"Inflammation is probably the background and driving force behind all major age-related diseases."~ Claudio Franceschi
Scientific Director, Italian National Research Center on Aging (INRCA)
Silent Inflammation is the root cause of all acute and chronic diseases ... CANCER ... heart attacks ... Strokes ... DIABETES ... Hypertension, commonly referred to as "high blood pressure" ...

Cathecin research in the area of inflammation shows:
Ability to chelate iron and copper, two metals frequently involved in the production of free radicals
Excellent antioxidant activity that even exceeds the antioxidant power of vitamin C
Xanthone research in the area of inflammation shows:
Antioxidant capability which exceeds that of vitamin E
All 43 mangosteen xanthones have antioxidant capability
The capability of blocking the most common inflammatory cascade (arachadonic acid to prostaglandin E2) at the genetic level (COX-2 blockade)

If you want the rest of the article, email me
tecuento123 at yahoo.com

It is very informative and eye opening,
remember one thing;
People perish because of lack of knowledge.

drink your green tea, drink your xanthones and get healthy.
