My kids didn't do any pretend play until they were closer to 2, so I'd wait on the little people stuff.
My cousin's daughter just celebrated her 1st birthday this weekend and we gave them an avocado tree. They just moved and don't have any landscaping, so I understand it's a special case, but you might consider it if it's an option.
They were thrilled.

We gave our friend's son a ball popper when he turned 1. He loved it and still plays with it a 2. I'm sorry, but I don't remember the actual name or maker. You could go to Toys R Us and ask them to help you find it.
Good luck!

My daughter is 17 1/2. When she was 1, our neighbors gave her a little plastic table with primary colored legs and 4 chairs.

She used that all the time. Right now, the same table and 4 chairs are at my next door neighbor's house and have been over 5 yrs for their 3 girls.

Anything Little People, busy ball popper, plastic shopping cart, doll stroller, (one year olds love to fill things up) so we got our little one tons of containers at that age like halloween buckets, etc., stacking blocks, board books, duplo or mega blocks.

My daughter is 2 now. When she was one she LOVED pretend food, pretend toy kitchen things. She also loved her toy stroller and toy shopping cart to push things around in.

My daughter loves books, balls, and building toys. Take a look at my Discovery Toys webpage for some excellent products. Everything is fun, educational and the toys grow with the children so they can use them for years to come. Some of her favorites are Giant Pegboard, Go Go Caterpillar, Keyboard Kylie, Castle Marbleworks, TouchTec Blocks, and Jumble Zoo. I hope you'll check them out at http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/karenchao

I got my nephew the stool from One Step Ahead that Jade K suggested and it's still in use (he's 3). My 1 year old loves Little People stuff, especially the buildings. His barn is his favorite, he'll open and close the doors, put the animals in and take them out over and over again.

Doll stroller or a little wooden rocking chair from michaels. You can spray paint it any color and paint the kiddos name on it. Depends on how close you are to the child. A neighbor would get the stroller, a family member would get the rocking chair. Michaels always has 40% off coupons.
