Grants and Scholarships for College

The absolutely BEST place to go is fastwebs.com It has every scholarship and grant available to you. It does an extensive profile asking tons of questions and then searches every possible financial aid that fits you personally and emails them to you. Definitely don't even worry about going elsewhere because this place has access to everything, and you only have to fill out your information once.

I did see a previous post about the TEACH grant, and as I teacher for the past 6 years, I have to say it's not at all worth it. I would advise against it unless there are absolutely no alternatives. She would be locked into a school for 5 years, and they usually aren't good schools to be in. And to top it off, it really doesn't help as much as you would think. I've had a few friends who did this. Some stopped teaching all together and others would just be in tears often throughout the year because of the situation they were placed in. There's a reason these schools need teachers so badly and force you to be contracted for so long. . .

Talk to the school financial aid office. The current years financial aid is based off of last years income but if there has been a significant change in income (such as job loss) then you can file an amendment to your fasfa. The same thing happen to me when I was in college, my father lost his job in the middle of the year but I was able to get some grant money.

she should contact the financial aide office at her school, they would be able to direct her to grants/scholarships that she would qualify for, & also they can help with students loans if she ends up needing that.

Aside from what you've already tried or been suggested, student loans are another option. Yes, they have to be paid back, but the loan rates are often very inexpensive. I'm on year 3 of my payback and I pay less than $200 a month (that's with $20,000+ in federal loans at a rate that's less than 4%). My parents and I shared the loan debt, so they pay the same amount as me every month - much easier than them or me paying 100% of it.

Also, she could look at a part time job (if she doesn't already have one) or taking a semester or year off to work and save up money and then go back. There's no rule that says she has to finish in 4 years or go nonstop. She could also try community college for the "core" classes (which are MUCH cheaper) or transfer to a less expensive school.

there is a new grant called TEACH. she would have to commit to a low income district for a few years but they pretty much cover everything.. definitely something to research!
