Granite Countertops VS. Silestone

My sister is looking at having her countertops re-done. She likes the look of granite but is not sure if silestone is the better way to go.
I told her I would check with you all to see which you think is better. What the maintenance is like. DO they stain easily? Any good and bad, we'd like to know.
Thanks in advance!
Elaine

I also prefer the Silestone. With granite you have to seal it once a year and is also scractes easily. Silestone does not scratch, you can put your hot pans directly on the stone and clean it with soap and water only.

Elaine,

I have Silestone in my Kitchen and I Love It. Easy clean up, you don't have to be concerned about using special cleaners on it like granite, or what you spill on it etc...no sealing, no worry! I have granite in my bathroom, and wish I had put Silestone in there instead!

my husband is a granite/marble installer and i ask him and he says the granite is better because the silestone is not natural stone like granite and the granite look a lot better the granite you just have to sealed 1 time a year.
if you are looking someone to do the job my husband can do it and he can give better prices.

I have both in my kitchen. I love both, but the Silestone was much cheaper which is a great thing! I have a light colored silestone--grey almost concrete-looking and haven't had any trouble with staining. My granite is dark so that isn't an issue. I haven't had any problems with any of my countertops except my marble tile--it shows rings from water glasses, spills, etc. FOREVER! So you will be fine if you stay away from that.

We have Silestone in the Dark Coffee Brown color. It is great, no sealing required like with granite (I think you have to seal granite once a year, but I could be wrong). It does not scratch or warp from heat. The only complaint I have is that our particular color (I don't know if they are all like this or if it's just b/c ours is so dark) has little flecks of what appear to be glass (I guess it's the quartz) and they often look like dust to me. But other than that...no complaints. I just clean it with soap and water, sometimes glass cleaner to make it really shine.
