Good Walking Shoes

I want to make the most of walking my son to and from school. My flat summer slip-ons are not working well for this. What are your suggestions for a good walking shoe? I know Walmart and Payless are probably least expensive, but this time I need to step it up a little (just a little) to get better quality. I just don't know where to go.

What can I do next?

I have had great luck with DSW. Prices are good and selection is great. I'd stick with brands like Nike, Adidas, or Puma. No Keds or Sketchers.

There are lots of brands, you will have to probably try some on to see what feels best. Make sure they don't slide on your heel, and that there is plenty of room for your toes. Also, look for shoes that are made specifically for walking or cross-training. Athletic shoes generally will indicate what sport they are for. You can try any sporting goods store, or some of the discount stores like Shoe Carnival and Off Broadway Shoes. But even if you go to a sporting goods place, watch for sales. You can still get some good deals if you check around. Hope that helps!

Yes, they will be more expensive, but I really suggest going to a walking/running store and have them fit you properly. Walmart and Payless shoes don't last very long, and I found that I went through them so quickly due to wearing out or just comfort issues, it was cheaper to buy the good quality ones. Sorry, I don't know stores in your area.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats SAS sandals and walking shoes. I have tried them all, cheap and expensive, and these are the BEST!

The very best shoes I have found are TEVAs. even the sandals give me terrific support. I'm sure other name brand walking shoes are good, too. I'm afraid in the case of shoes, you get what you pay for.

I vote for Keens. I LOVE my Keens. They are expensive, but you can usually get a pair on Ebay for a reasonable price. Good luck!

Do you have a Kohl's store? I always buy my walking shoes from there. They have name brands which they put on sale for a good price. I alwasy try on several pairs and buy what feels good. I've bought Nike, Avia and Adidas there. I usually spend around $40-$50 on sale.

I love my Earth Shoes. They have really good support and have helped some back and hip problems I was having before them. They are a little expensive, which is why I debated on getting the for so long. The price has been well worth it though. Cheap shoes are just that, cheap. Unfortunately you get what you pay for, and for good quality you are going to have to spend a little more. Best of luck to you!

Hi Carrie
Are you in Boise? If you are, may I suggest the Idaho Running company on 17th and state. They will have you walk across a computerized sensor pad that maps out your foot so you can see what kind of foot support you need most. If you take in a pair of old shoes they will give you $10 off. I have been buying my shoes there for 7 years and have been very happy.

Hey Carrie! Didn't know you were on here!
If you don't have a specific brand of shoes that you love and don't want to spend a ton of money you should check out Famous Footwear. I love that store! I can always find comfortable shoes on clearance or at least on sale. Earlier this year I picked up a new pair of sketchers and nikes for around $20 each on clearance. Good luck!
