Good Videos for a 2 Year Old

Hello Mammas,

I am going on a 3 hr plane flight with my 2 year old daughter in a couple of weeks. I was thinking about bringing my laptop, and a couple of videos to help keep her entertained on the plane.

We don't watch TV at all, and haven't watched any movies since she's been born. She's probably watched a total of an hour of TV in her life, and that was at her grandmothers house.

Any suggestions on good videos that would be age appropriate and keep her attention for a while?

Thanks for any suggestions!

What can I do next?

I know you got a lot of advice but my daughter just loves carebears and they teach about being truthful and sharing. I didn't want my daughter to watch to much tv but with being a full time student online sometimes its easier to just let her entertain herself while watching her movies. the brainy baby dvds works too. lots of music not a lot of talking but plenty of color things to watch. the big plus is they are like 6 dollars at walmart.

Anything with bright colors and songs seemed to do the trick when my daughter was 2. She loved loved loved Elmo and I liked it because she was learning. I never tried the Baby Einstein movies, but always heard wonderful things. Those are always good choices, because at least she is being educated while watching them. Have a safe flight!

A.,I think your daughter would enjoy the Baby Einstien DVDs, they are set to classical music, my sons favorite is Baby Macdonald and Baby Noah which have a lot of animals. I think these are very entertaining and calming. Some very colorful animated childrens dvds are the Backyardigans, very musical or Alex likes The Wonder Pets, they have one that is based on Nursery Rhymes that is pretty cute for the younger set. We are super big fans of Sesame Street, Sesame Street have several that are sing a long style. Blues Clues is cute, I tend to believe that the sing a long style dvds have the most replayability = ) There are some Disney Sing a long dvds but if she is not familiar with the movies I wouldn't say they were my first choice. I hope you have a safe, stress free trip. Be sure and pack her some snacks and her favorite lovey for the plane ride, maybe to pad the time you are on th eplane a new colorful lift a flap book or some tiny inexpensive new toy to entertain her? I saw the neatest wood puzzle at Toys R Us, the pieces can not be removed because they are kind of like on a grid/ maze so that you can move the pieces around ( cannot be removed from the puzzle entirely so no pieces to lose ) example animals and habitats = )
Hope you get lots of great ideas = )

Hi A.! My son watched his first movie at about 18 months--Sesame Street. He loved them! His favorites were 'Let's Make Music' and 'Sing Along'.

You may not even need to bother, though. I just flew 3 hours with my boys (1 and 4) and we passed the time with naps, eating, and books!

My grandkids love all the Veggie Tales movies and started watching them before they were 2, and are still watching them - oldest is 11. They are very fun movies that take a story or verse from the Bible as a theme. They have action, bright colors and music that keeps the kids attention and the whole family loves watching them, including grandma & grandpa.

Good Morning,

Being that she doesn't watch tv, she will either be completley intertained or not interested at all- you can check out tons of videos and dvds at the library (including educational ones too), that way you are not spending money on something that she probably won't watch that often.

I would also recommened taking color books, crayons, story books and a toy or 2- you can also ppick up a few new things and save them for the flight at the dollar store so there is something different for her-also, you might want to try giving her a window seat so she can see everything during takeoff and landing

I fly with my kids at least once a year (22 months and 11 yrs) so i hope this helps and have a dafe trip :)

Hi A.,
I've discoverd my daughter likes the cartoon Mickey Mouse clubhouse. It is all bright colors and they talk to the viewer. There's a lot of interaction, (questions, "help us reach up high," etc.), so it's not simply eye entertainment. There also some problem-solving concepts.

The library idea is great - or if you can't find any good ones (or don't have access to a free library), you can check out ebay or half.com for rather cheap DVDs.

I'd also recommend taking some suckers along in case the altitude bothers her ears. Sucking on those can help her ears pop.

I am a HUGE lover of Between the Lions. It is a PBS program that I think is better than Seasame Street. A family of Lions runs the library, they read stories, sing songs, go on adventures all the while teaching kids about morals, letters, vowel sounds, sight words, etc. Tons of fun and not 1/2 as annoying as Spongebob, Elmo, or Barney.

Another series that is really good for that age group are Ms. Spider, Maggie & the Ferocious Beast (not so Ferocious actually), or Oswald. All entertaining without being annoying. Also, any of the Barbie movies are fantastic (Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Diamond Castle (our fav..great stories & songs), Fairytopia, Mermaidia)

Good Morning A., Any of the Baby Einstein DVD's are wonderful for little folks, short maybe 30-40 minutes. We have "Talking Hands" "Baby's Favorite Places", and "Baby's First Words" most have sign language included with the words. We also enjoy Veggie Tales. Great Christian stories for little people, Bob the tomato and Larry the Cucumber make kids laugh and learn with silly songs and antic's, all Biblically based.

Have a wonderful flight and relaxing vacation.
God Bless

You've already gotten a lot of ideas with just a few responses. Here are a few more:

PBSKids.org has a lot of things online: streaming videos, videos available to download, online games, coloring pages, etc. You could download a few programs onto your laptop and print off some coloring pages for the same programs so your daughter could have a "thematic" flight. The best programs for my 2-year-old: Super Why (it's the best show no one knows about) and Sesame Street (I don't like it so much but my son does).

Hi A., I think that Dora would be great for your daughter to watch on the plane. Dora the explorer is really cute and it teaches your child things like counting and spanish and stuff like that. The backyardagains is also great and the wonder pets. These are all t.v. shows but you can buy then for cheap on DVD at walmart. I know your daughter will love them. Make sure too that you take other stuff for her to do and bring plenty of snacks! My son likes to draw when we are on the plane and I bring books for him too. Good luck on the plane and God Bless you and your family.

Hi A.,

My kiddos loved Kipper the Dog. Good, positive messages about friendship and sharing, etc. with soft, soothing jazz music in the background. Very simple videos (the last thing you want is an overstimulated child on an airplane!!) and good for a child who doesn't watch a lot of television.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip!

First of all, good for you having been able to keep her away from the tv so far. I wanted that but didn't have the support I needed. Anyway, a DVD that we got as a bday present for our daughter's first birthday was Preschool Prep's "Meet the Colors" http://www.preschoolprepco.com/h/p/mtc/index.php
I have to say, it kept her attention and she knew all of her colors before she could say them. Now that she's 2, that's still the video she asks to see when given the choice. Her other favorite thing is Elmo. She doesn't want to watch the rest of Sesame Street, just Elmo's World. Best of luck on the plane!

Make sure you take headphones... there is usually some cranky businessman sitting close to you that can make your trip miserable. Take lots of snacks. I travel a lot with my 2 1/2 year old and he is usually so facinated with flying, colors, books and the person in the seat next to us that we never even get to videos. Have a great trip!!!

My son is almost 2 and loves the Preschool Prep videos. He has learned all of his letters, numbers, and shapes from them. I bought them with the same intent since we are taking a trip this fall. Check them out...you won't be disappointed!

Yo Gabba Gabba and Blues Clues are favorites of my twins. They are engaging and the kids learn from them. For movies, there are a LOT of animated features that are actually too much for a toddler. The best movies without scary parts, violence or sassy language would be Curious George, Horton Hears a Who, Wall-E, or Cars.

Good luck on your plane trip!

I agree with Tori below. Based on my own experience, she isn't likely to have the attention span that would make the effort worth it. I went to Big Lots and stocked up on every kind of non-noise-making toy, sticker book, dry-erase book, doll, etc imaginable. I literally had a carry-on of toys. We went through every last thing I bought, but I kept my then-2-year-old busy Dallas to California and back. Good luck!

I too had this problem. My doctor thought it was great but by age three I really needed to have some down time. I did get her to watch Teletubbies and Barney. Those were the first two programs that she seemed to really like. She branched out from there to the regular preschool television programs. Good luck!

Hi A....
I just wanted to mention that if she doesn't watch a lot of tv as it is, she may not be that interested in watching videos for that long. I would make sure, although I'm sure you would have, to take along plenty of books, stickers, and the Color Wonder markers, that's what my daughter plays with best on the airplane. TV doesn't keep the attention of my child either, as we have mostly steered her away from it thus far as well, and she would not be interested in a full length movie, so I'd stick to the ones that involve shorter skits, like Sesame and the like.
