My little family will be moving to Winston-Salem this summer. We have a 16-month old daughter and I would like to move into a nice neighborhood that is safe and family-friendly. I also want to look ahead a few years to when my daughter will be starting school. What are the best elementary schools in the area? Please share you recommendations. Thank you!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
From what I understand the north part of Winston-Salem (mostly 27106 zip) has the schools with the best test scores. I would be happy to get you in touch with some moms who have done lots of research. My children currently go to First Assembly Christian School, so I haven't had reason to look elsewhere. Let me know if I can help further, be glad to! I love Winston-Salem and have lived here since 2000.

I live in Davidson County. The schools there are really good. Northwest Elem, and Friedburg Elem is a new school. Where I live in Davidson County, Forsyth County is right on the border. I live off of Friedburg Church Road and forsyth County and Davidson County zig-zag the road. So you could live in Forsyth County but just be close to Davidson. I know it sounds confusing but it is beautiful and we just got a new Wal-Mart, LOL

Well I live in Pfafftown that is basically a part of Winston-Salem thanks to a recent annexation. I live in a brand new sub division off Reynolda Rd built by Eastwood homes. I LOVE IT!! I love the houses and the neighborhood is new so right now there are only a few families. We are just far enough away from the city to be quiet but close enought to access EVERYTHING we need. The schools in our zone are great too!!. ( in know your DD is little for that now but time flies believe me). My son goes to Julian Gibson Elementary and it has been a god send to us. He has thrived after really struugling before we moved. The teachers are wonderful as is the rest of the staff and new principal. Our neighborhood has a cute little playground that does include toddler swings ( a lot of playgrounds over look that). It os growing so therre is building going on which is the only downside right now. The site foreman does keep everytihng very safe for those of us who live here already and our kids. We have been in W-S for 2 years and we absolutely love it. We relocated from Cape Cod Massachussetts. There are a lot of great neighborhoods. You will Love It!

Hi,
I live in Clemmons, a suburb of W-S. My daughter attends Clemmons Elem, which is a great school. Other good ones I know of are Meadowlark, on the west side of W-S toward Lewisville and Sherwood Forest, closer to Wake Forest U. We love Clemmons. Been here for almost 17 years. There are lots of great neighborhoods in Clemmons and Lewisville. I have lots of friends in eastern Davie Co., too. Good schools and neighborhoods there. Many people live in eastern Davie and work in W-S, same w/ northern Davidson Co. as the other response said. I like my neighborhood as it is fairly small and not much through traffic - safe for bike riding and such. I attend a MOPS group (Mothers of Preschoolers) that meets in Davie. These groups are a great way to meet other moms when you're new to the area. When you know where you'll be living, check out mops.org for a group near you. I highly recommend it. Good Luck and welcome to the area.

I think you're going to love it here! Winston is a great place! There are loads of good neighborhoods. My recommendation is to look at as many as you can, but stay focused on distance to your husband's work, stores, etc. People say everything in Winston is 10 minutes away and that's great, but we know lots of people who moved to town and got circled around with the realtor and ended up way out by themselves. They liked the house and the price but didn't take into consideration the rest of the community. So keep that in mind! In central Winston, the most family-friendly neighborhood is "Ardmore", but also parts of "Buena Vista". Most people rule that out because it's expensive, but we live on the edge of it near Reynolds High School with houses that are pretty reasonable in price and the location, schools, surrounding parks are unbeatable.

Many Winston folks with kids also like the communities in Clemmons/Lewisville.

I saw a recommendation for Ardmore Baptist Preschool. That's where my daughter goes too and we LOVE it - can't say enough about it! She started at 2 and their little toddler teachers are sooo great!
