Hi there! I have a question about Kindergarten.
My son is in a Pre-K right now and I can hear all the moms talking about the school already and that makes me stressed out a little. I'm not from here so not really familiar with the system yet. I know I have to look for a public school near my zip code if I don't want to pay, right? Has anyone can give me some more informations about that? I live in the 77096 area (Braeswood and Chimney Rock) and will surely appreciate any advice!

What can I do next?

I live in that area and they are all good schools. I don't know what you are looking for in a school, but I would suggest that you contact the school districe, or just visit the schools in the area. You might want to enroll your child in a magnet program. The schools will be happy to help you with this.

You do not have to pay for public schools and the school you attend is based on where you live - in this case, it looks like you are in the Houston Independent School District (www.houstonisd.org) and here is the information about how to enroll in school. I tried to find the school based on your zip code but they need your street address, see below and give them a call. Hope this helps and you can start enjoying the Pre-K days instead of worrying about next year.

Enrollment Process

To register and enroll your child in the school that he or she is zoned to attend, bring the following to school:

The child’s birth certificate or other proof of age and identity;
Proof of your identity and residential address (driver’s license and utility bill); and
A record of your child’s current immunizations signed by a doctor.
Your child may be eligible to enroll provisionally if the required immunization process has begun. Texas law requires that a child must be enrolled by the child’s parent or guardian or another person with legal control of the child under a court order. It also requires the district to record the name, address, and date of birth of the person enrolling the student.

Where and When to Enroll

Each school in HISD handles its own registration and enrollment. Most HISD schools open for enrollment no later than the first week of August. To find out the enrollment schedule for a specific school, telephone the school. To find out which school your child is zoned to attend, use the School Zone Search Tool. See School Choice Options for information about transfers and Magnet/Vanguard and charter-school enrollment.

School Boundary Maps

To view individual school boundary maps, go to the School Locator. Type in part of the name of the school in the "Search by Name" field and click "Submit ." All schools have an "Attendance Boundary Map" link. If you need additional assistance, see How to Use the School Information Tool.

I live in your area & we go to our zoned school. You live in a good public school zone so I'm sure your school is good. Starting this month, the schools will be open for magnet tours. check the schools in the area for their tour times & days. Then you can see for yourself if your zoned school is a good match, or if you want to "apply" for another school.
You can go to another HISD school w/out paying tuition. You can email me if you want more info/privacy. It sounds confusing & stressful...and it can be, but you are in a good area.

Depending on which side of Braeswood and Chimney Rock you will be zoned to either Lovett, Kolter, or Parker. All three are very good magnet schools. You also have the option of applying to a different one if you do not like the one you are zoned to. I live close to that area and applied to all three last year for my daughter. We were accepted to all, however, decided on catholic school. I think that the deadline is early next year but check on the HISD website to make sure and print out the application. There is also a magnet school week where you can tour all the schools and find out about each specific magnet program. I know that Parker is music and Kolter is language. Good luck! You can't go wrong with any of those schools.
