Good Christian Reading for 8 Year Old

I need some recommendations for some good chapter books for my 8 year old girl that I can read with her. She is starting to get interested in Hannah Montana and High School Musical. I would rather have her reading books that have a christian worldview and focus on character/inner beauty/integrity.

What can I do next?

Personally, I have boys--but my friend has girls and they have really enjoyed the "American Girl" series. There are also so many good classics--"PollyAnna", "Heidi", and "Little Women" just to name a few. Oh---and don't forget the "Anne of Green Gables" series!

The Hannah Montana phase will pass. I don't keep certain things from my 13 yr old. I allow her to make her own choices. This works for us because she finds that she is not really that interested in some of the pop stuff. It is MUCH more interesting to the pre-teens/teens if they think mom and dad don't want them interested in a certain thing. Just MHO.

When she was in 6th grade, Hannah was popular and by the 7th grade, the girls wanted nothing to do with her. Right now she will cringe if she hears Hannah Montana.

She does like the Jonas Brothers. The girls read a lot of magazines. My daughter likes all of the Chicken Soup books as well.

You should try Family Christian Stores or Lifeway stores for those kind of books as well. I loved watching Little House on the Prairie and the books are better..but I have yet to read them myself..shame too. I also just read the Love Comes Softly series and loved those; they are by Janette Oak (not sure if I am spelling that right, no coffee yet LOL). She has other books out there as well. Good clean reading. It is good that she wants to read though. My 8 yr son is not into reading like I was and I am trying to get him into books more than TV.

Little House on the Prairie is always a favorite.

Visit your local Christian bookstore and check out what they offer. Ask a sales associate for help, too.

Excellent series called the Mandie series author is Lois Gladys Leppard. Here is a website http://www.mandie.com/about.htm

I loved the series and they have christian values. You can find them at Christian book stores or at the public library. There is also about 40 books or more in the series, so she would not get bored.

I'm so glad you asked this question! I googled it and found these possibilities below. I have a six year old girl, and this will help me find some new resources for us, since we can read them aloud now and then she can read them herself later, as her skills improve. I hope you find some great ideas, and I look forward to seeing what other moms suggest!

I have a 7 yr. old DD who turns 8 in October and we love the Mandie series by Lois Gladys Leppard-they are older but they are really good reads and she really enjoys them -there is a whole set of them. They have about 11-12 small chapters per book and she thinks she is so grown reading them. LOL and they are Christian books which her Dad and I love.

Hi,

I have two girls, 16 and 13 and this phase is a big one, has alot to do with peir pressure and all their freinds too. Let her enjoy it, but also incorporate things like chicken soup books that have good stories and you can get the christian versions that will included bible verses to look up with the stories. You have to talk to her about what these celebrities do, because they will always be there in front of us, and you have to learn to deal with them. Give her the bible as a tool to live her life, it too will always be there.

Good luck!

Hi, M..

I second the Mandie series by Leppard. However, the plots and writing grow weak as the series drags on (and on...) so I would stick to the first dozen books or so.

Definitely, Little House books are great and appropriate for an 8 year-old. The Chronicles of Narnia are excellent, and it's a great introduction to CS Lewis. Most of his other works are often overlooked but are fantastic literature for older teens.

Other books include The Courage of Sarah Noble, EB White's books (Charlotte's Web, Trumpet of the Swan, etc.), and many mainstream books that are completely appropriate.

Keep in mind that reading some of the other items she likes is a great way for you to talk with her about your views on character, inner beauty, and integrity.

I LOVED the Mandie series when I was younger. They are great novels about a girl living in the Little House on the Prairie era. There is always an adventure or a mystery and of course, a bit of romance. Nothing too much, just a boy that she is friends with... but of course they like each other from afar. They're Christ-centered and have wonderful lessons on character and morale. I would highly recommend this series!

Have fun reading!

My 8 year old is reading the American Girl series right now. We saw the movie, (cute but pretty depressing...ahh, it is about the Depression though right?!!), and then she started the books. We are on a system that if she reads all of the books (about 54 I think) then we will go to the American Girl store and get her a doll. Have fun reading, if you find something great I would love to know! Thanks ~A.~

Check out www.cbd.com. It is an online Christian bookseller with great deals and plenty of juvenile fiction. I really liked "The Sugar Creek Gang" books as a kid as well as the ones about Joy Spartan.
