My son loves to be read to, but doesn't like to read (if it seems to be more like work) I don't know if I agree with the sight word way of learning but I do agree with the phonics way...I need books that will help him better understand how to read and that aren't so easy he memorizes it..ANY help would be great. I have heard that B.O.B. books are great..any thoughts?

Go to your local library and ask the children's librarian. I know in our town they have list of "recommended books" by grade level!
I have the first set of B.O.B. book and my daughter has the first few memorized so I set them aside and she reads the next level and so on. We also bought the Scooby Doo phonics set, it isn't as easy to memorize and it has a lot more sounding out which is nice, and they are a challenge. However they have so many characters' names and words they can't sound out it is a little frustrating for her. I try to show her if she can't sound it out go on in the sentence to see if you can figure out what it is by what makes sense. I like to look at books from the library, if I like the series I buy them for home. We also have the Hooked on Spelling computer game. My daughter is also going into first grade.

I wouldn't worry to much about memorizing, that sort of is part of the process if you think about it. The goal sould be that when his eyes see the word he knows it automatically, you don't want him havign to sound it out everytime he sees it. But to answer your question, yes the BOB books are good. I like the suggestions for websites, and i would also encourage him to write thank yous, lists, letters to family etc. reading and writing in conjunction are very powerful learning tools.
I suggest getting some that are easy readers ( the easier they are, the more it will build his confidence and he will most likely begin enjoying it more). I would also suggest you check w/ his school for suggested reading lists for his level...if he is homeschooled or they don't have a list, scholastic or other online sites will have a good list for you. I am actually using a Kindergarten list for my daughter who is ready for K but can't start until the following school year.

Try the Elephant & Piggie books by Mo Willems. He is a wonderful author, he wrote the Pigeon books (ex: Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus). I didn't realize that he had books that were intended for young ones to read on their own until my son came home from school after the first month of 1st grade talking about how much he loved the books his teacher had about an elephant and a pig. I asked the teacher about them and I went out and purchased them. I have "My Friend Is Sad", "I Love My New Toy", and "There Is a Bird on Your Head". They are cute, funny, and easy to read.
