Our ped. gave us the green light to give snacks to our son if he seems to want them. I went to the store and saw all the traditonal infant snacks but I was curious what other ingenious ideas other moms have had about sanck time. My son has a few teeth and eats really well. I did buy a few of the traditional snacks, but any suggestions as to homemade or alternative snacks would be greatly apperciated. Also, I would love any cost effective suggestions too...while I know traditional brands are great...are there cheaper ideas?? Thanks in advance...

What can I do next?

I know that walmart makes similar foods to the gerber snacks, like the banana strawberry stars, but my son never really cared for them. My 11 month old really liked whole wheat bread toasted and cut up, as well as the baby goldfish. I would not recommend the zweiback toast or biter biscuits myself...too messy!! We also like cut up bananas and watermelon. When you think he is old enough, our favorite treat type snack is a new one from Honey Maid called graham cracker bees. They are right next to the graham crackers in the cookie isle, and they are just the right size and texture for my son (we have used them for about 2 months) Have fun with this new time....before you know it, he will be wanting everything you have. ~A.~

I went to Walmart and just perused each aisle looking for things that were bite sized that my son could eat. The first thing I tried were those Dole fruit cups...my son LOVES them. I also buy the store brand applesauce (much cheaper than the Gerber brand). He also loves the Yo Baby and the Horizons Organic yogurt. You can try regular yoplait or store brand yogurts, but they gave my son diarrhea so I use the organic. I also make him milkshakes with Carnation Instant breakfast, whole milk, and bananas (doctor recommended I start those to add some calories to his diet). I also bought him spaghetti-o's and baked beans...our pedi wants him to get as many calories as possible in case you're wondering about the weird food choices. Also, I know the Gerber Puffs are not cheap, but my son eats those like crazy...I buy the Parents Choice brand at Walmart and they're cheaper. Walmart also has little veggie cups...they're like the fruit cups but with veggies and you heat them for 30 seconds. I give my son one of those, a fruit cup, and a yogurt for dinner every night. He does really well with them and it saves me a lot of money.

My son absolutely LOVES Ritz Roasted Veggie Crackers. I have tried other flavors and other cracker brands, but nothing works as well as those.

Teddy Grahams might be a good alternative for you. They have them now in the Oatmeal Grahams. And of course the usual Goldfish and Cheerios. But Cheerios now has the Fruit Cheerios and those are really good, my daughter loves them!

Good luck!
