Going"green" on Toilets

Hello,

I've been reading a lot about others who are going green. We have the nutrition under way for the most part. I am wondering what people do to clean toilets in a green sort of way that is really effective. We have one toilet that is really old and we will be replacing it when we have enough cash to redo the bathroom (sometime in the next 3-6 months). Until then, the only thing that takes away the nasty ring and grime out of the toilet is bleach. I've heard how bad bleach is, what is as effective and safe?

I tackly my toilet ring with one of those toilet stones they sell in the cleaning isle. I'm not sure what they are called but one of them is light blue and shaped in a half circle with a sponge on the flat side. You have to use some elbow, but I've never used anything that makes the toilet look brand new again. This works without scratching the enamal, it's wonderful thing, no chemicals.

Hi W.,

I know you asked about cleaning a toilet in a "green" way, but have you also put anything in the tank to reduce the water usage? If not, try using a brick or fill a larger bottle with water and submerging it into your tank. The toilet will use less water each time it flushes.

Good for you for trying to make a difference!

W.,

I use a baking soda paste (just mix with water) to scrub my toilets and it gets them really clean. Clorox "green works" toilet bowl cleaner is probably your best bet to get the bowl clean. If you can stand the smell, vinegar works great on mirrors, windows, toilet handles, shower heads and faucets.

Good luck,
S.

Hi W.,

I have been shopping with an online health and wellness company for over 5 years now. They really have everything you need to clean your house and also personal care items. Their Tub and Tile works great on the toilets and I am not one that loves to do that so they get pretty dirty before I clean then and they come out sparkling after. This company has been "green" for over 23 years and has many patents to go along with their products as well. Our family has felt a lot better by getting the toxic cemicals out of our house. You can only shop with them if you are a member but I would love to tell you more about it if you would like. That way you can see if you would like to be a member and shop with them too. Feel free to give me a call ###-###-####) or request info from my website: www.livetotalwellness.com/mybiz and I will be glad to call you at your most convenient time.

Hi,

I am a representative for 'green' products. We have things for cleaning everything. Check it out at http://www.shaklee.net/helpfromlinda/getclean

Yes bleach is very bad. Even the closed bottle emits fumes that affect children. Check out more info about going green and the effects of toxins in the cleaners at http://www.livegreeneveryday.com - Look especially at the August post.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Hi W.! I use baking soda and vinegar with about 5 drops of tea tree essential oil. Vinegar and tea tree have disinfecting qualities.
There is a book called "Green Up Your Clean-Up" by Jill Potvin Schoff, that is extremely informative for doing just as the title says! The book contains many recipes for household cleaners that protect you and the environment!
Have fun!

I see 4 people have tried to sell you Melaleuca. I just quit that company. If you want a truly green solution- don't go with them. My kids and I have received chemical burns from their products.

I agree with the first post about the Shaklee products. I bought a bottle of their cleaner at least a year ago and still have a ton left! It works great in the toilet and can be used all around the house. Other brands you can buy at discount stores are method (at Target) and I think green source has a toilet cleaner now too. Try doing a quick swish every morning then you won't have to worry about the ring building up in the first place. It's very easy just to keep a toilet brush handy.

Hi W.,
I'm working with a green wholesale manufacturer, and nothing compares to their safe, effective, and economical products. In addition to their products being scientifically researched, patented or patent-pending, of course, you won't find any bleach, ammonia, phosphates or other harsh substances. They're "mom" proof!
They actually carry the first EPA registered botannical disinfectant. What this means is that this product kills 99.99% of common household germs without the use of bleach or other harmful ingrediants. Absolutely amazing!
You can check out my website to learn more and request more information from me.

Looking forward to helping you clean safely,

Hello W., I am so glad that you have become one of the many families that are "going green". There are many plant based toilet cleaners out there that you can try but I am not sure they would be strong enough to tackle your toilet ring...a good solution that I have found is Alka Seltzer tablets...throw a couple in, let sit for a while and then scrub away, a little elbow grease never hurt anyone. Another solution that I have hear but have not tried is using vinegar, which I use for cleaning everything from my floors and countertops to my childrens toys, it is a natural disinfectant. Good Luck and keep doing your part to better your and your famillies health as well as the health of our earth!
