Going to Work Full Time

HI. I am really considering going to work full time. Right now I am a stay at home mom. I love being home but I also really want to be teaching. I have been offered a teaching position. Both my girls would go to the school with me. So I know they would be getting a great education. I am just not 100% sure what to do.

I would love advice from moms that have been home and then returned to work full time. How was it? How is the adjustment? Was it worth it?

Any advice is great appreciated.

Thanks,
C.

I love working...I think it helps me be a better mom because I need the adult interaction and really makes the time we have all that much more precious. I about went insane while on maternity leave after my daughter was born. I think the most important thing is to ease yourself into it. It should be easier since the girls will be at school with you so they are apparently school-age and you have been separated before, but you might want to find some way to spend a few days a week, or a few hours a day outside of the home and away from them to get yourself used to being away. At least for new moms, I think the reason so many fail to return or quit shortly after returning is because most people feel like they have to return full time immediately, which doesn't really give you time to adjust to being away and to develop some emotional stability about your child's well-being while you are gone...Maybe not as big of an issue for you, but you might consider it nonetheless. Good luck!

I just started working again. It is hard sometimes. I think that working is easier than staying home, but at the same time it is more overwhelming when you go home at night. I really miss staying home with my little girl when I'm working, but if I am off work I sometimes feel like I want to go back to work. So I think its a lose lose situation. I would try it out and if it is to hard then what would you lose.

One word for you TOUGH! I had to try it. I was in a similar position and went back to work and miss the freedom of being home and running the errands that needed to be done. I miss not being the one taking care of my children if they were sick for the fear of letting my job down. I will continue doing what I am doing and that is staying home with the kids and working from home...

Hi C.!
I was a SAHM for the first two years of my son's life and wouldn't trade it for anything. Now I work as a secretary in a school system and LOVE it!! My son and I have the same holidays off, and so we get to spend all of that time together, and that's what I like the most! Returning to work was not too big of an adjustment-kids usually adjust well. I would definitely say it was worth it! Working in the school system is for my family the best choice, because of the same schedule with my son. Good luck with your decision!! Your girls will do great! :)

Seems like a win-win situation with the girls going to the same school as you. I would just stress the fact that you need to be really organized prior to going back to work so you don't get overwhelmed. You are taking on a second job and it is your choice to do so, but still it is a lot. Your days off are going to be spent doing laundry and cleaning. Planning ahead with meals is really helpful to make the week nights go smoother and then you won't be too tired at the end of the day. Maybe since you won't have to do daycare, you can get someone to help with the cleaning twice a month. The other thing I would suggest is to find an inexpensive dry cleaner and take anything that needs to be ironed. These few things allow you some family time and down time on your time off. If you want to go back to work, your situation is probably the best case scenario. No late nights, the kids don't need baby sitters and probably you'll be more fulfilled. Best of luck. There is always a big need for good teachers.
