I would like to take my family to Hawaii for Christmas this year. Looking for information on the best places to stay (Condo's to rent and Hotels) and places to go. We are going to Honolulu.....Waikiki Beach!! Not trying to spend a lot of money....on a budget....so we are looking for a place to stay where there is a kitchen in the room to cook our meals.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Check out www.vrbo.com. I use them for EVERY vacation! I've never been disappointed either. Because you rent through the owner and not an agency or realtor, you get cheaper rates and you can also see traveler reviews, photos, etc. It's nice to be able to contact the actual owner as well if you have any special considerations or needs and sometimes they'll work out a payment plan with you. They have great deals on VRBO for Hawaiian islands! They list townhomes, condos, apartments and homes.

It's been awhile since I did Oahu and Honolulu, but the bus service there used to be fantastic and it was super cheap! Read some current guide info about it to see if it's still an advised mode of travel. Two things to see in Honolulu -The Polynesian Cultural Center and The Honolulu Zoo -especially if you have little ones.

I'm on the vrbo.com band wagon. I have used them numerous times, including for a condo in Waikiki! Within a few blocks was the beach, a grocery store, 7-11 and an open market. The building had a gated entry and seemed to be about half vacation rentals and half owner occupied. There was even a small bar and mini-market adjacent to the building. Have fun!

Too funny, I was going to suggest www.vrbo.com and saw two other people have already! Really is a fabulous resource and we've used them several times.
I lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for 5 years, so I have tons of ideas if you'd like to write to me yourself. I always like to send people away from Waikiki, so you can see the more peaceful and local slice of life in the island. Make sure to rent a car though, even just for a day or two, so you can drive and see sites not on the normal tourist list. My favorite spot is on the east shore, Lanikai Beach or Waimanalo Beach (Kailua Beach area). Breathtaking. The Ko'Olina lagoons on the West Side are lovely, and the North Shore provides some amazing vistas for surfing (think famous Pipeline and Sunset Beaches near Haliewa.) Some of the more touristy places include: Dole Pineapple Farm, P. Cultural Center, any luau, Diamond Head for hiking, Pearl Habor area (USS Arizona/Mighty Mo), Honolulu Zoo, Sea Life Park, Waikiki Aquarium...I can go on and on. Try to hit the Bishop Museum, Honolulu Art Academy, Swap Meet or International Marketplace for all gifts you need, some different easy hikes like Makapu'u Lighthouse, and for sure go to snorkel at Hawaii Kai's famous Hanauma Bay. Have fun and good luck! -RG

I was going to suggest VRBO, but lots of folks beat me to it. We found a great condo in Waikiki, but a little off the beaten path on the Ala Wai canal. It was great. I highly recommend VRBO.
