Goat's Milk Vs. Cow's Milk When My Child Turns 1?

Hi Moms!
Any opinions on giving goat's milk instead of cow's milk when I stop formula when he's a year old? I've heard goat's milk is easier for them to digest. Any other benefits? If I decide to go w/ goat's milk first...how long until I should transition to cow's milk? Also to note, I would buy organic for any kind of milk product.
Thanks!

Goat's milk is fabulous (although very expensive). My son is allergic to cow's milk and we had to switch. It is very easy to digest (I'm lactose intolerant and even I can drink it).

Good luck!

You are right goats milk is much easier to digest. Someone said something about the taste-yes it tastes quite different than cows milk but if that's all your child knows they won't think it tastes funny. My daughter only gets Horizon organic with DHA added. Someone also said TJ's sells organic for $3.29-that is not correct. Their organic is around $6.00/gallon which we buy. The $3.29/gallon is for the milk where the cows were not treated with rBST-the hormone to make them produce more milk but it is not organic.

Good luck!

Hi Christine,

Goat's milk is much closer to human milk than cow's milk. Cow's milk has proteins that can be allergenic.
My 17 month old son was nursed until 9 months, then went on earth's best organic formula (cow-based), but i tranistioned him after he turned one to goat's milk because i have read so much about health issues that some children develop from the allergens in cow milk. many people are critical because tehy have never tried it (goat's milk) or because they don't see a reason to, but i think it is better for my son -- and he has only had one cold at about 10 months (after i weaned him and while he was on formula).
do what you think is best and don't let teh critics curb your enthusiasm for doing something great for your son. you can buy in powder or liquid form.

Best to you!

Why not do both, if there's no allergy?

We're adventurous eaters (wheeee, although I've only had crickets on a stick once, and I didn't think the whole "chocolate covered ants" thing was serious, but "when in Rome" ;), so we go multiple source in dairies (well, with most everything). Cheeses, yogurts, milks...there are so many wonderful flavors & textures out there...and there's always SLIGHT differences in nutrient content (vit/min/proteins/fats/sugars). Heck, there are differences in cows milk purely from the geography in which they come from -coastal v plains v jungle, etc.)

Well since you put your son on formula the digestive issues aren't probably as much of a concern... if you were nursing then I would suggest the goat's milk because the protein structures are closer to that of human breast milk. He's probably already used to cow proteins so stick with that.

Milk is NOT what is used to be.

I am a family wellness coach and here are two of the sources that I trust:

Do your due diligence. My children are 13 and 10 and there is no milk, cows, goats NOTHING in this house, hasn't been for years.

If you want a healthy option: This is my kids breakfast or drink with meals. http://liveitdontdiet.isagenix.com/us/en/isaleanshake.dhtml

Personally, unless your child has dairy allergies, I would give cow's milk. Goat's milk is good, but has a very specific taste. Buy organic when you can. Trader Joes sells it for $3.29 a gallon.-www.weelicious.com

I breast feed until 13 mo and then I am using the next step formula and goat's milk for the reasons you stated. I am going to stick with goat's milk for a year. He gets cow's dairy from cheese, yogurt, ect. It just makes me feel better b/c it is supposed to be easier on our bodies. I stick to the organic too. I guess it's the little things we hope will make our children healthier but I really think whatever you do will be fine.

My son is 13 months also & I started switching him over to Goats Milk when he turned 1 year (from b-feeding also). I am mostly concerned about the mucus build-up, ear infections, constipation, etc, from the casein in cow's milk. He does however eat cow's milk yogurt & a bit of cheese. Anyway, he hasn't had any problems with the Goat's milk. It IS super expensive. I'm not sure if the stuff I'm using is organic, but I know there are no hormones in it. It's the only type I've found at my stores...in the white & purple quart-sized container.
