I feel like I am under siege at home! Gnats seem to be taking over my house. I've elminated anything that might attract them and they keep coming. How do I get rid of these pesky things and keep them away? At this point I am looking forward to winter when they all die off! Any advice is appreciated!

here's what i've heard...dawn mixed with water an vinegar in a little dish. i tried this. i didn't work. get a small bowl. put a banana peel in it. cover with plastic wrap. poke holes in top. gnats fly in but can't get out. i have yet to try this. the thought of an old peel sitting around kinda grosses me out!
i will be watching for the responses though because i have the EXACT problem. and if one more of these little pests flies into my mouth or nose i'm going to go crazy!!!

I use all natural cleaners from Gold Canyon which are infused with essential oils to clean my kitchen - The oils help to repel pests... especially ants in the summer with the floor cleaner... The cleanse powder is great for the garbage disposal and they are all affordably priced at 8.98 to 11.98 and last a VERY long time because you need so little when you clean! And since they are plant based and all natural you don't have to worry about using them around the kids. YOu can check them out at www.wix-n-stix.com - I used to get gnats all the time with my plants, but I have had zero problems this year (and this is when I normally see them)

put cups with a little red wine vinegar around the house, they are attracted to it then they drown. It will help a little.

My MIL leaves mothballs on her window ledge inside the screens when her windows are open. They don't like the smell and won't come in through the screens.
YMMV

To get rid of bugs around our house I actually use something called PreSpot. I have not found many things that work for gnats. I hope that this helps

I'm sorry to say I have found no cure for gnats. They aren't repelled by anything! The only thing that helps is to limit your exposure to them and how close they can get to you. I spend a lot of time outside and during heavy gnat times I wear a floppy hat or a scarf that hangs over my neck and ears (the most annoying area), sunglasses. I've found if they can't get on/around my face, they're not quite as annoying. They also make small knit netting that makes a shield around your face...not attractive, but effective. It'll be cold soon.

We get them because of our garbage disposal. We make a habit to pour bleach down the disposal and the other sink drain and let it sit for a little while then run the hot hot water. You may just want to pour a little bleach down all your sink drains. Just a thought!

Hi S.. We had the same problem all summer, especially in the back yard and kitchen. Someone suggested we clean our disposal (there are special solid disposal soaps sold at Target). It helped a lot. We can't do much about them outside, though.

This works for the tiny fruit flies that appear so maybe it will work for gnats too. In a glass jar (like a spaghetti sauce jar or salsa jar) I fill it about halfway with apple cider vinegar and a drop or two of dish soap. The flies are attracted to the scent and the dish soap helps to keep them from getting out. It worked for us with the fruit flies, hopefully, it will work for you!

We have the same problem. I keep apples and oranges in a bowl for the kids and this time of year I always have to put them away. The vinegar is not working in our house:(.

I had the Gnats also. I went to home depot and got Hot shot flying insect strips- you hang these up in rooms and with-in one hour there were no Gnats, they last for four months.

Put out little bowls (small) of vinegar out. They are attracted to it and it kills them. Watch out of course that no pets or small children will drink it. One of my children read about this recently and we did it. It actually works!

Sounds like it could be drain flies, which are attracted by organic material. Search high & low for any remnant of fruit/vegetable. Also, wipe down the underside of the flaps of the entry to your disposal. There is a lot of gross organic stuff under there that attracts them. Good luck getting rid of them!
