My cousin's daughter needs to be on a gluten and wheat free diet. My cousin went to the store and saw rice spaghetti that would feed about 2.75 people in her house for $4.99. That is very high!!! She is looking for some economical ways to stick to this diet for her daughter. Any help, tips, websites would be appreiciated!!!

Unfortunately, there are not any. However, I have found that Healthway will give a 10% discount if you ask for it when you buy those types of food. I have this allergy and have had since I was born (but had to really start changing my eating habits after my son was born because it aggravated it). Sometimes the Giant at Old Keene Mill has some sales as well as Whole Foods but it is very seldom because the food is expensive because it's healthier and they can. You can go online at glutensolutions.com and Gluten-free Mall offer a 10% discount and you can have the food shipped to you. There are also many cookbooks that you can get now that are very helpful but require time at home to be able to bake/make these things yourself.

Hi Levonne, I don't know where in Md you live, but you may want to check the bulk section of stores like Mom's, Whole Foods, YES market and maybe even a local coop for less expensive prices on pasta and some other rice items. As someone else stated substituting more veggies for the pasta makes a difference as well. Using Spaghetti Squash is one way you can still have spaghetti just without the pasta.

This website is great: http://glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com/

Lots of recipes and ideas. The author even has a cookbook out, which would make a nice gift :-)

My DH just went on the paleolithic diet - it is mostly high meat/protein and veggies/fruit - and low starches/carbs, etc...so I have started cutting out a lot of pasta and wheat products and instead supplementing with more veggies, which are healthier any way - and you can still get carbs in fruit and stuff. I have made some really good meals with pork tenderloin and grilled veggies, stir fry, chicken with summer squash, tomatoes, garlic, etc....this could be a fun way to help your daughter learn about veggies and help you in the kitchen. Spaghetti squash is a great alternative to spaghetti...and you can even start baking your own breads...http://www.cookingbread.com/gluten_free.html.

Good luck!!!

My son has multiple food allergies. It's very time consuming, but I cook all his meals separately from ours. It may mean spending a little extra on his meals, but I see no point in a whole family eating an expensive rice pasta instead of the very cheap wheat kind. It just means boiling two pots of water.
