Glucose Test

Anyone have any good diet recommendations to help pass the glucose test? I am going on Wednesday and I would really like to pass the first time. With my daughter I didn't pass the one hour test and had to go for the 3 hour test. I don't want to do that again this year. I am thinking that if I do a diabetic diet tomorrow and Wednesday (my test is at 4pm) then I may have a chance to pass.

Thanks for your help!!

I didn't pass my first because i ate granola! Just don't eat refined carbs before hand. Stick to high fiber, and protien.

I actually think it is better if you eat whatever you eat everyday. By doing so, the test will be accurate. I know that you just want to avoid the extra test (in case is needed), but….If you eat different just to avoid a test, you can actually jeopardize the whole point to get the correct result and keep the track about how are you doing.

Don't crash diet for this! The whole point is to help your doctor make sure you are on the right track nutritionally. If you're this worried about it, maybe consider seeking-out a nutrition consultation to help you restructure your diet?

The whole point of the test is to see if your blood sugar can regulate with your usual diet that you regularly eat. Trying to "cheat" the test will only give you false results and could wind up being dangerous to you later on. It shouldn't be difficult to pass it. (I took it twice and passed and I'm a sugar fiend!) You should have received instructions from your doctor whether or not to fast before the test or not (meaning you don't eat at all for a short period of time). If you're already nervous about not passing it, it should be an indicator that you should see a nutritionist to get you on a healthy diet.

In all honesty, I think there are way too many screenings and tests for pregnant women these days. I used a midwife because I knew that I would have a lot less pressure on what I decided to do or not do. However, the glucose test was one that she required as part of her services. Of course, I knew that going into the whole thing so I didn't have any problem.

If you're already eating how you should, there shouldn't be any problem with the test. If you don't pass, then your body is sending a signal that needs to be addressed. If you're not eating properly, this needs to be addressed as well.

Before the test ask a lot of questions about what the normal range is and when your results come in insist that they give you a number...not just say pass or fail. Then YOU can decide if you are going to take the 3-hour test or not.

You might also ask them to re-schedule your 1-hour test for the morning and do it as a fasting test. From what I understood, that is the most accurate way anyway.

funny u should ask. i just went last thurs for mine and always failed the first one with my other 2 kids. i stressed this test like crazy for the same reason u are. i didnt wanna do that 3 hr test (which i always passed those)! about 2 days before i stopped my soda and sugary snacks. for breakfast that morning of the test (my appt was 9am) i had scrambled eggs with cheese and bacon, water to drink. nothing in your mouth after you have drank the stuff. I PASSED!!!! i cried when she came in and told me. it was such a relief. she said she thinks the better info they gave me before hand helped in my passing. like she said just the simple bowl of cereal in the morning would make you fail. BEST of luck to you! let me know how you do=D

ps just read when someone said you should reschedule for first thing in the morning..might make for a better chance too. if you cant just remember to have nothing but protien to eat and water to drink.

I was in the same boat...I failed the one hour test on my first pregnancy and had to take the three hour test. I am 37 weeks pregnant with my second son and when I went to take the glucose test, I just watched what I ate the day of the test and stayed away from sugary foods which I passed this time. Just dont eat a candy bar before and you'll do great!

Just stay away from all sugars (sweets and refined, white flours), and load up on protein. It's a good rule of thumb to follow for most of your pregnancy, actually.

This isn't really a pass/fail test, its a diagnostic tool to see how your body processes food. What you eat a couple of days prior to testing isn't going to make much difference. Gestational Diabetes (GD) is a result of placental hormones interfering with your body's insulin production; you either have it or you don't. There are super health-conscious women who get it, and obese fast-food lovers who don't. Limiting your carb intake is good diet advice in general, but it isn't going to help you "pass". Know, also, that if you do have GD, and you eliminate all carbs, your body will overreact and your blood glucose level will skyrocket anyway. I understand your desire to pass/trick the test. I had to do the 3 hour with my 3rd and I passed, and with my 4th, I had to do the 3-hr again and I was terrified of failing, so I've been there. I was diagnosed with GD that time and spent hours educating myself because I thought it was my fault I "failed", but its not...its just something that happens.

I don't want to scare you, but if you are GD and manage to "pass" the test, and then proceed to take that as a free pass to eat all the junk you want, know that unmanaged GD can lead to many complications, and I know you wouldn't want to jeopardize the health of your baby. Good luck!

Depending on what kind of test they will give you,
a diet for a few days ahead of time isn't going to make any difference.
Also, this isn't a pass-fail situation;
it's a diagnostic tool so they will know what kind of diet
you should be on and what meds, if any, you need to take.
Are you pregnant?
If so, you shouldn't mess around with your food intake, even for 2 days.
Do you remember the numbers from your last test?

Don't eat fruit the day of the test because it is high in natural sugar. Drink alot of water.

I just took this test about 2 months ago. I had mine in the afternoon also. I stuck to water all day and had toast and eggs for breakfast, and for lunch I had crackers and summer sausage/cheese. Just stay away from sugary foods and you will pass. And while your waiting for that hour after the glucose drink make sure to not chew gum, eat, or drink anything. Dont smoke either.

i failed my first test, off by 5 pnts. I can't stand the thought of the 3 hr test.

However I found online A study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests that jelly beans may be used to administer glucose tests during pregnancy Instead of drinking that horrible liquid sugar mix, if you eat 18 Brachs jellybeans while drinking water, you will achieve the same accuracy as if you drank the drink. And of course limit your sugar intake not just traditional sweets also (ketchup, mayo, granola, fruit juice, canned or fresh fruit, etc) It is the hidden sugar that adds up.

Here is the link to the studay: http://www.childbirth.org/articles/jellybean.html

Good luck on passing, C.

You probably won't like my answer, but......... What you don't want your Dr. to know is that you haven't made the best choices when it comes to food. Think about it, why does the Dr. even order that test. It is because high blood sugar can cause problems with your pregnancy that would be dangerous for you and your precious little one. Maybe, there needs to be a wake up call to what your eating.

I wish you and your baby all the best.

Just eat sensibly! I drank orange juice in the morning and the nurse was SURE I'd be back for the 3 hr test, but I was fine (No O. told me to fast.)
